| Two experiments were carried out with twenty-four male weaned Holstein calves to verify the influence of different dietary cation-anion concentrate and roughage proportions on calves metabolism. In the first experiment, calves were fed rations with -100, +200 and +400 mEq cation-anion balance/kg of dry matter, containing 60% of roughage and 40% of concentrate. In the second experiment, calves (117.6±20.8 kg average weight) received rations with similar dietary cation-anion balance but in diets of 40% roughage and 60% concentrate. As the dietary cation-anion balance became more positive, there was a quadratic response of blood pH in both diets with 60 and 40% roughage. | Acetylcholine (ACh), adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and sodium cyanide (NaCN) activate petrosal ganglion (PG) neurons in vitro, and evoke ventilatory reflexes in situ, which are abolished after bilateral chemosensory denervation. Because in our previous experiments we superfused the isolated PG with solutions free of CO2 /HCO3¯ buffer, we studied its effects on the PG responses evoked in vitro. PGs from adult cats were superfused at a constant pH, with HEPES-supplemented (5 mM) saline with or without CO2 /HCO3¯ (5% / 26.2 mM) buffer, and carotid (sinus) nerve frequency discharge (CN) recorded. | About half of the human population is infected with Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium causing gastritis, peptic ulcer and progression to gastric cancer. Chemotaxis and flagellar motility are required for colonization and persistence of H. pylori in the gastric mucus layer. It is not completely clear which chemical gradients are used by H. pylori to maintain its position. TlpA, a chemotaxis receptor for arginine/ bicarbonate, has been identified.
