Questions of Costs About the French Bio-Fuel Sector by Year 2010 AgEcon
Treguer, David; Sourie, Jean-Claude; Rozakis, Stelios.
By the end of year 2010, each member state of the European Union (the EU) ought to incorporate 5.75% of bio-fuels in the total of fuels used for transportation purposes. In order to achieve such a target, tax incentives are implemented by the French government given that the production of bio-fuels still remains unprofitable, even if oil prices are about $60/barel. After a brief introduction (1), we will first demonstrate the importance borne by the cost of agricultural raw material in the total cost of biofuels (2). For this purpose a sequential multi annual LP model is used (3). Emphasis must be placed on the possible competition between food and energy crops, should the production of energy crops require land exceeding the mandatory 10% set-aside (4)....

Medium Term Outlook for Canadian Agriculture International and Domestic Markets AgEcon
Charlebois, Pierre; Gagne, Stephan; Gendron, Carole.
The purpose of this document is to describe the features of the MTO covering the period 2010 to 2020. The MTO is a plausible future for the international and domestic agri-food sectors based on current policies in Canada and other countries as of Fall 2010. It serves as a benchmark for discussion and scenario analysis. The outlook makes specific assumptions and outlines their implications. Since it assumes that policies remain unchanged from existing legislation, the outlook is not a forecast of future events. In particular there are no assumptions made regarding the outcome of the Doha round of trade negotiations. It also assumes no impact from climate change and from policy to mitigate climate change nor significant animal disease outbreaks or unusual...

Medium Term Outlook for Canadian Agriculture - International and Domestic Markets AgEcon
Charlebois, Pierre; Gagne, Stephan.
The purpose of this document is to describe the features of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Medium Term Outlook for Canadian Agriculture (previously entitled Medium Term Policy Baseline) covering the period 2008 to 2018. The outlook is an attempt to outline a plausible future of the international and domestic agri-food sectors. It serves as a benchmark for discussion and scenario analysis. The outlook makes specific assumptions and outlines their implications. Since it assumes that policies remain unchanged from existing legislation, the outlook is not a forecast of future events. The medium term assumptions used and published by the OECD/FAO in the Agricultural Outlook are by in large maintained in the AAFC's outlook but updated to reflect...

Biofuels, Poverty, and Growth: A Computable General Equilibrium Analysis of Mozambique AgEcon
Arndt, Channing; Benfica, Rui M.S.; Tarp, Finn; Thurlow, James; Uaiene, Rafael N..
This paper assesses the implications of large-scale investments in biofuels for growth and income distribution. We find that biofuels investment enhances growth and poverty reduction despite some displacement of food crops by biofuels. Overall, the biofuel investment trajectory analyzed increases Mozambique’s annual economic growth by 0.6 percentage points and reduces the incidence of poverty by about six percentage points over a 12-year phase-in period. Benefits depend on production technology. An outgrower approach to producing biofuels is more pro-poor, due to the greater use of unskilled labor and accrual of land rents to smallholders, compared with the more capital-intensive plantation approach. Moreover, the benefits of outgrower schemes are enhanced...

Industry Speaks Strategies for Solving the Food Inflation Problem AgEcon
Neves, Marcos Fava.
This article addresses some of the partial truths and misinformation in media reporting over the booming food prices debate. Many studies are only linking biofuels to the inflation cause, while ignoring several other factors such as the growth of the world population, economic development and income distribution. An overview of the causes is discussed and 10 strategies proposed which policy makers, governments, and organizations can adapt to move the world forward towards long-term sustainability.

A bioüzemanyagok használatával járó várható földhasználati változások Magyarországon AgEcon
Vida, Adrienn; Baksa, Adrienn.
A megújítható energiaforrások szerepének növelésében katalizátorszerepet betöltő Európai Unió már a 80-as évek elején megoldást keresett a túltermelés következtében felhalmozódott szántóföldi termékek felhasználására. Az idők során a támogatási rendszer is a non-food termelést helyezte egyre inkább előtérbe, majd a kialakított direktívák és piaci intézkedések előkészítették, és így biztosították az összefoglalóan biomasszának nevezett megújítható...

Economic Benefits and Costs of Jatropha Plantation in North-East India AgEcon
Goswami, Kishor; Saikia, Jitu; Choudhury, Hari Kanta.
Energy security, emissions control and environmental concerns are some of the issues that drive India to search for bio-fuels in general and bio-diesel in particular as an alternative source of energy. The inception of National Biofuel Mission in 2003 has resulted in expansion of jatropha plantations in different states of the country. In North-East India, jatropha plantation was started in 2007, mostly at small farmers’ level with direct and indirect initiatives of the government and the private sector. However, adoption and expansion of jatropha plantation in the rural areas largely depend on profitability from such plantations at farmers’ level. The present study has assessed the profitability of jatropha plantation in four states of North-East India,...
