A note on stability in food matrices of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis-controlling bacteriophages Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Robeson,James; Turra,Gabriel; Huber,Karen; Borie,Consuelo.
Background Lytic bacteriophages are bacterial viruses that upon infection kill their host cells and therefore have re-emerged as biological control agents of bacterial pathogens, particularly in the field of food related infections. Here, we investigated the stability in different food matrices of five phage isolates capable of controlling the foodborne pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE). Results We found that two phages, originally isolated from food sources, were up to 5 logs more stable than three phages isolated from sewage, in ten food matrices (fresh and processed) at both 4°C and 18°C. Conclusion Lytic phages isolated from contaminated food sources seem to be a better choice when structuring phage cocktails to be used in the...

Potential of aqueous extracts of basidiomycetes to control root-knot nematodes on lettuce Horticultura Brasileira
Wille,Caroline N; Gomes,Cesar B; Minotto,Elisandra; Nascimento,José S.
ABSTRACT The root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) is one of the main pests of lettuce due to the crop’s high susceptibility, unavailability of registered nematicides and lack of resistant cultivars. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of aqueous extracts of ten basidiomycete fungi for root-knot nematode control (in vitro and in vivo) on lettuce. The aqueous extracts of these fungi were initially evaluated in vitro in relation to their nematostatic and nematicidal activity. All extracts inhibited the hatching of second-stage juveniles of nematodes. The extracts that provided the highest mortality index (Pleurotus ostreatus, P. citrinopileatus, P. pulmonarius and Boletus sp.) were applied in pots containing autoclaved and infested soil...

The microgastrine parasitoid wasp Apanteles hemara Nixon, 1965, is currently being considered as a potential biocontrol agent of amaranth leaf-webber pests in Africa. To facilitate future research and identification of the species, we characterize it from an integrative taxonomy perspective by providing a comprehensive morphological redescription, extensive illustrations (including the first images of the holotype), DNA barcodes, wasp biology, host data (Choreutidae and Crambidae caterpillars), and updated geographical distribution of the species (including eight new country records). Despite a wide distribution across four major biogeographical regions (mostly within the Old World tropics), the species seems to be relatively uniform from a molecular and...

The impact of fungicides on Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson epizootics and on populations of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), on soybean Neotropical Entomology
Sosa-Gómez,Daniel R.; Delpin,Katiaíres E.; Moscardi,Flávio; Nozaki,Márcia de H..
The fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson is one of the most important natural enemies of soybean caterpillars, mainly under humid weather conditions. Outbreaks of the fungus Microsphaera diffusa Cooke & Peck have demanded fungicide applications on soybeans, which could result in outbreaks of noctuid populations by reduction of the natural inocula of N. rileyi. The recommended fungicides have shown to be detrimental to beneficial fungi, reducing infection, delaying epizootics, and resulting in increased host population densities. In laboratory assays, benomyl, difenoconazole, sulphur and carbendazim affected conidial germination of N. rileyi, being the latter less deleterious. To assess the impact of fungicides used to control M. diffusa, on N....

Genomic variants of bacteriophages against Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis with potential application in the poultry industry Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Robeson,J; Retamales,J; Borie,C.
Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) is a prevalent gastrointestinal pathogen worldwide, threatening both animal and human health. In the latter, disease is associated to the consumption of SE-contaminated products from the poultry industry. The control of SE infection is largely based on the use of antibiotics and vaccines, but the use of lytic bacteriophages is re-emerging as an additional strategy for SE control. In fact, a number of recent reports point to the adequacy of bacteriophage as an efficient prophylactic or therapeutic countermeasure to SE infections. However, less attention has been focused on the basic biology of these bacteriophages. Here we report on three bacteriophages (f18, IF1 and EST2) that share a common viral particle...

PINK DISEASE, A REVIEW OF AN ASYMPTOMATIC BACTERIAL DISEASE IN PINEAPPLE Rev. Bras. Frutic.
MARÍN-CEVADA,VIANEY; FUENTES-RAMÍREZ,LUIS ERNESTO.
ABSTRACT Pink disease is an asymptomatic pineapple disease in the field and is evidenced with a reddark coloration when the infected fruit is processed to obtain products such as juice, jam, and preservatives. Tatumella morbirosei and T. ptyseos (formerly Pantoea citrea) have been demonstrated as causal agents. Although T. morbirosei and T. ptyseos have been well studied, there are currently no cost effective control methods in pineapple cultivation. The purpose of this review is to summarize the significant and updated research on the role of pink disease in pineapple.
