In situ distribution and characterization of the organic content of the oyster shell Crassostrea gigas (Mollusca, Bivalvia) ArchiMer
Dauphin, Yannicke; Ball, Alexander D.; Castillo-michel, Hiram; Chevallard, Corinne; Cuif, Jean-pierre; Farre, Bastien; Pouvreau, Stephane; Salome, Murielle.
Cultivation of commercial oysters is now facing the possible influence of global change in sea water composition, commonly referred to as "ocean acidification". In order to test the potential consequence of the predicted environmental changes, a cultivation experiment was carried out. The left and right valves of the oyster shell Crassostrea gigas differ in their structure; moreover, lenses of non compact layers are irregular. The shell layers of juvenile C. gigas are studied using a variety of highly spatially resolved techniques to establish their composition and structure. Our results confirm the presence of three different calcitic structural types. The role of the lenses of chalky layers is not yet deciplered. Despite a common mineralogy, the...

Extraction and concentration of biogenic calcium oxalate from plant leaves Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Costa,Liovando Marciano da; Tronto,Jairo; Constantino,Vera Regina Leopoldo; Fonseca,Marilane Kalyetta Almeida; Oliveira,Alessandra Pacobahyba; Costa,Marcelo Rocha da.
The objective of this study was to extract and concentrate calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals from plant leaves that form the above mentioned crystals. The chemical and physical studies of CaOx from plant to be performed depend on an adequate amount of the crystals. The plant used in this study was croton (Codiaeum variegatum). The leaves were ground in a heavy duty blender and sieved through a 0.20 mm sieve. The suspension obtained was suspended in distilled water. The crystals were concentrated at the bottom of a test tube. The supernatant must be washed until it is free of plant pigments and other organic substances. Biogenic CaOx crystals have well-defined and sharp peaks, indicating very high crystallinity. Moreover, the CaOx crystals were not damaged...
