Discovery of a population of the lesser mottled grasshopper Stenobothrus stigmaticus on the Dutch coast (Orthoptera) During an inventory of the nature reserve De Vroongronden between the towns of Renesse and Burg-Haamstede (province of Zeeland) the first population of the lesser mottled grasshopper Stenobothrus stigmaticus in the western part of the Netherlands was discovered. It was found in low dunes with a vegetation dominated by grass, sedges and moss. The animals are not very mobile and the nearest populations are at least 80 km away. Therefore, it is most probable that it concerns an old population and not a recent colonisation. Hopefully the discovery will initiate further research in this region. |

The springtail Isotomurus maculatus new to the fauna of the Netherlands (Insecta: Collembola) Isotomurus maculatus (Schäffer, 1896) is a southern European springtail, which is recorded here as new for the fauna of the Netherlands. Specimens were collected on five sites in different regions of the Netherlands. The sites, a garden, a roadside verge and a lane with trees can be characterised as synatropic with a large degree of disturbance. In northern Europe Isotomurus maculatus is a eurytopic species that colonises ruderal sites very quickly. This conclusion is based on the description of the sites and the ecology of species collected together with I. maculatus. The distribution in Europe and the taxonomy of the species is described. It is argued that I.... |

Platycheirus splendidus new for the Netherlands, Belgium and France (Diptera: Syrphidae) Platycheirus splendidus has only recently been described as a cryptic species closely related to P. scutatus. Re-examination of the material of P. scutatus in some of the Dutch collections revealed that P. splendidus also occurs in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. From Belgium one male was found (Bastogne, 23.V.1999, leg and col. J.T. Smit) and one male from France (Dept. Hautes Alpes, Pré de Mme Carle, Gironde, 1850 m, 11.VI.1992, leg. J. & W. van Steenis, col. W. van Steenis). The Dutch records of P. splendidus are summarized in a distribution map. The difference between the males of both species are given in a table. Females were studied briefly, but they... |

Influence of flooding on terrestrial chironomids in grassland (Diptera: Chironomidae) Although flooding is an important factor for the invertebrate fauna of grassland, not much is published on this topic. As in other groups the different species of terrestrial Chironomidae display different reactions during flooding. Some larvae will move to drier parts, others remain on the spot. All species can survive for some time submerged in water, but the uptake of water can be a problem, especially in summer time. Some species are more or less characteristic for very wet grassland (like Metriocnemus tristellus), but nearly all species depend on the presence of drier parts of the grassland for maintenance of the population. |

The distribution of Carabus auronitens in the eastern part of the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Carabus auronitens Fabricius, 1792 is a carabid beetle with two distinct (meta)populations in the eastern part of The Netherlands: Achterhoek en Twente. The first recording in the Achterhoek was done in 1910, in Twente in 1935. From 1993-1995 the exact boundary of its distribution in the Netherlands was surveyed. It is shown in this paper that C. auronitens occurs very locally in the Netherlands. The population in Twente is small and isolated. The population in the Achterhoek is part of a large population extending into Germany. Genetic analysis revealed a difference between the two populations. The Twente population is an isolated relic. In... |

New and interesting Dutch bugs ii, with an updated checklist (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) The following species are recorded for the first time from the Netherlands: Tupiocoris rhododendri (Miridae), Xylocoridea brevipennis (Anthocoridae), Metopoplax fuscinervis (Lygaeidae) and Elasmostethus minor (Acanthosomatidae). Six species are already shortly mentioned elsewhere as Dutch species, but are treated here in detail: Copium clavicorne and Derephysia sinuatocollis (Tingidae), Amphiareus obscuriceps (Anthocoridae), Horvathiolus superbus and Holcocranum saturejae (Lygaeidae), and Stagonomus bipunctatus pusillus (Pentatomidae). New data are provided for the following little known or rare species: the dipsocorid Cryptostemma waltli, the gerrid Gerris... |

Overwintering habits of the land snail Vertigo angustior (Mollusca) During a mollusc survey in 2004 en 2005 in the province of Zuid-Holland special attention was paid to Vertigo angustior. The species was observed overwintering in large groups, up to hundreds of specimens together, between mosses (especially Brachythecium rutabulum (Hedw.) Schimp.) in small patches of poplar forest (Populus nigra and Populus alba) in the old dunes. As far as we know, this gregarious behaviour is described here for the first time. Many of the snails were found in a position where they had incorporated a moss leaf into the epiphragm closing the shell’s aperture, thereby achoring themselves to the vegetation, possibly for stability. |

The harvestman Nelima sempronii new for the Netherlands (Opiliones: Phalangiidae) On September 17, 2004 one male and three females of Nelima sempronii Szalay, 1951 were collected in Ooij, east of Nijmegen, province of Gelderland. On September 25, and October 1 and 6, 2004 an additional number of 21 male and 5 female specimens were recorded from the same locality, a river dune with an old brickstone factory, close to the river Waal. The harvestmen were found under decaying wood, stones, at wooden poles and concrete walls, under shrubs, tall grasses and hedgerows, mostly close to ground level. Data on morphology, ecology and distribution are given. Original illustrations are presented. It is suggested Nelima sempronii may well become, or already is,... |

Branchiodrilus hortensis, an exotic worm new for the Dutch fauna (Annelida: Oligochaeta) The peculiar naidid worm Branchiodrilus hortensis (Stephenson, 1910) is recorded new for the Netherlands. In 2002 and 2003 several specimens were collected from three localities in and near the Giessen, a small, slow-flowing river near Gorinchem (province of Zuid-Holland). In 2004 numerous specimens were collected in the small river Aa in the city of Den Bosch (province of Noord-Brabant). These freshwater localities (Cl 50-143 mg/l) are eutrofic, slightly alkaline (pH 7.3-8.6) and with a reasonable oxygen-level (saturation > 70%). Branchiodrilus hortensis is known from southern Asia, Australia and Africa. It is not known how this species has become... |
