Teratogens: a public health issue – a Brazilian overview Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mazzu-Nascimento,Thiago; Melo,Débora Gusmão; Morbioli,Giorgio Gianini; Carrilho,Emanuel; Vianna,Fernanda Sales Luiz; Silva,André Anjos da; Schuler-Faccini,Lavinia.
Abstract Congenital anomalies are already the second cause of infant mortality in Brazil, as in many other middle-income countries in Latin America. Birth defects are a result of both genetic and environmental factors, but a multifactorial etiology has been more frequently observed. Here, we address the environmental causes of birth defects – or teratogens – as a public health issue and present their mechanisms of action, categories and their respective maternal-fetal deleterious effects. We also present a survey from 2008 to 2013 of Brazilian cases involving congenital anomalies (annual average of 20,205), fetal deaths (annual average of 1,530), infant hospitalizations (annual average of 82,452), number of deaths of hospitalized infants (annual average of...

Prevalence of Café-au-Lait Spots in children with solid tumors Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santos,Anna Claudia Evangelista dos; Heck,Benjamin; Camargo,Beatriz De; Vargas,Fernando Regla.
Abstract Cafe-au-lait maculae (CALM) are frequently observed in humans, and usually are present as a solitary spot. Multiple CALMs are present in a smaller fraction of the population and are usually associated with other congenital anomalies as part of many syndromes. Most of these syndromes carry an increased risk of cancer development. Previous studies have indicated that minor congenital anomalies may be more prevalent in children with cancer. We investigated the prevalence of CALMs in two samples of Brazilian patients with childhood solid tumors, totaling 307 individuals. Additionally, 176 school children without diagnosis of cancer, or of a cancer predisposing syndrome, were investigated for the presence of CALMs. The prevalence of solitary CALM was...

Maternal and fetal effects after inhalation of the herbicide flumetralin Biological Sciences
Boneventi, Priscila; Baroneza, José Eduardo; Moreira, Camila Queiroz; Santos, Debora Cristina D. Meirelles dos; Salles, Maria José Sparça.
Farm workers at Brazilian tobacco plantations are frequently exposed to toxic chemicals and eventually became contaminated with these products. Flumetralin is a inhibitor of axillary bud growth on tobacco and the effects of gestational exposure should be investigated since many pesticides cross the placental barrier and cause birth defects. The aim of this study was to investigate maternal and fetal effects caused by inhalation of Flumetralin. Pregnant Swiss mice inhaled Flumetralin for 10 or 20 minutes on the seventh day of pregnancy. On the 18th day, animals were euthanized and subjected to laparotomy for removal of the uterus and embryos. The uterus was weighed and the embryos were examined. Fetuses of both treatments showed visceral changes in the...
