Evaluation of the types of starch for preparation of LDPE/starch blends BABT
Vinhas,Glória Maria; Lima,Suzana Moreira de; Santos,Lívia Almeida; Lima,Maria Alice Gomes de Andrade; Almeida,Yêda Medeiros Bastos de.
This study evaluated in relation the growth, and the amylolytic activity of mixed and isolated cultures of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Talaromyces wortmanni on different types of starch. The thermal and mechanical properties in polyethylene/starch blends (proportion: 80/20 (w/w) before and after inoculation of the mixed cultures were evaluated. The regular starch Amidex 3 and the modified starch Fox5901 stood out in relation to the cellular growth and production of the amylase enzyme. In spite of the short time that the blends were exposed to the fungi, the microorganisms promoted physical and chemical changes in the structure of the blend, modifying its thermal and mechanical properties. The alteration of the degree of crystallinity and mechanical...

Use of blends of bioabsorbable poly(L-lactic acid)/poly(hydroxybutyrate- co-hydroxyvalerate) as surfaces for Vero cell culture BJMBR
Santos Jr.,A.R.; Ferreira,B.M.P.; Duek,E.A.R.; Dolder,H.; Wada,M.L.F..
Vero cells, a cell line established from the kidney of the African green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops), were cultured in F-10 Ham medium supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum at 37°C on membranes of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and their blends in different proportions (100/0, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60, and 0/100). The present study evaluated morphology of cells grown on different polymeric substrates after 24 h of culture by scanning electron microscopy. Cell adhesion was also analyzed after 2 h of inoculation. For cell growth evaluation, the cells were maintained in culture for 48, 120, 240, and 360 h. For cytochemical study, the cells were cultured for 120 or 240 h, fixed, processed for histological analysis,...

Instant coffee with steamed PVA beans: Physical-chemical and sensory aspects Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Reis,Tamiris Aparecida Diniz dos; Conti,Antonio José de; Barrientos,Eliseo Alexander López; Mori,André Luiz Buzzo; Benassi,Marta de Toledo.
ABSTRACT Around 20% of Brazilian coffee production corresponds to defective beans (PVA), which decreases the quality of the coffee brews. Steam treatment has been reported as an alternative to improve the cup quality of coffee products. This research aimed to study the feasibility of using steamed Robusta PVA beans in instant coffee products. After the steam treatment (2 bar for 3 min), the Robusta PVA was dried, roasted, subjected to extraction in a pilot plant, and freeze-dried. The steamed and untreated Robusta PVA materials (raw, roasted, and instant coffees) and blends of instant Arabica coffee with PVA were characterized. The steamed Robusta PVA instant coffee presented 7.01 g caffeine and 8.74 g total chlorogenic acids in 100 g product. Instant...
