Pre- and post-infection activity of new fungicides against Botrytis cinérea and other fungi causing decay of table grapes Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Serey,Ricardo A; Torres,Rene; Latorre,Bernardo A.
Pre- and post-harvest diseases restrict table grape production and exports (Vitis vinifera L.) in Chile, with the most important disease being grey mold (Botrytis cinérea). In addition, rot due to Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium herbarum, Penicillium expansum, and Rhizopus stolonifer frequently occurs. The pre- and post-infection activity of fungicides against these pathogens was studied on Thompson Seedless table grapes. Detached, mature, berries were used, and inoculations were performed with 20 µL of a 10(6) spores•mL-1 suspension placed on three punctures aseptically made at the calyx end of each berry. Fungicides used (per liter) were boscalid (600 mg), boscalid (200 mg) + pyraclostrobin (100 mg), boscalid (200 mg) + kresoxim methyl (100 mg),...

In vitro and in vivo antifungal activity of natural inhibitors against Penicillium expansum Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Fieira,Claudia; Oliveira,Francieli; Calegari,Rubens Perez; Machado,Alessandra; Coelho,Alexandre Rodrigo.
Penicillium expansum is the causative agent of apple blue mold. The inhibitory effects of the capsaicin derived from Capsicum spp. fruits and yeast Hansenula wingei against P. expansum were evaluated in an in vitro and in in vivo assay using Fuji apples. The minimum inhibitory concentration of capsaicin determined using the broth micro-dilution method was 122.16 µg mL-1. Capsaicin did not reduce blue mold incidence in apples. However, it was able to delay fungal growth in the first 14 days of the in vivo assay. The in vivo effect of the yeast Hansenula wingei AM2(-2), alone and combined with thiabendazole at low dosage (40 µg mL-1), on the incidence of apple diseases caused by P. expansum was also described. H. wingei AM2(-2) combined with a low fungicide...

Use of spectrophotometry as a tool to quantify the sporulation of Penicillium allii in garlic lesions Trop. Plant Pathol.
Valdez,Jorge G.; Piccolo,Ricardo J..
A technique to measure the concentration of Penicillium allii conidia in damp chamber experiments by spectrophotometry was developed. A negative linear correlation (R²=0.56) was observed between transmittance at 340 nm and the concentration of P. allii conidia in water agar 0.05%. The equation that relates transmittance (T) with concentration (conidia mL-1) (y) is: y = 9.3 10(6) - 86497 T. The method was assayed by inoculating 43 P. allii strains in two garlic cultivars. The method proved to be more rapid than the traditional use of a hemocytometer with an improved accuracy. The CV of the number of conidia per hemocytometer reticule was of 35.04%, while the transmittance CV was of 2.73%. The extreme values chosen for T were 40 and 80 because the...
