Systematic notes on Asian birds. 54. Comments on the names proposed by Hodgson (1845) and their priority Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C.; Walters, M..
Hodgson (1845) described 49 ‘new’ taxa. It appears that when he prepared this paper for publication Hodgson was unaware of parallel publications by Blyth. Conflicts of priority are thus a concern and although Blyth’s relevant papers have generally been conceded to have priority the ‘fit’ of the dates has not previously been clearly explained. We apply the dates for Blyth’s papers provided by Dickinson & Pittie (2006) and confirm that these fit with previous understanding, implying that no fresh issues of priority arise. 26 of the 49 ‘new’ taxa prove not to have been new, having been named before. Of 18 Hodgson names 16 are in current use. Another has been replaced by a nomen novum due to preoccupation, and one more has been declared a nomen oblitum....

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 47. Blyth’s ’Catalogue of the Birds in the Museum Asiatic Society’ and his 1849 Supplemental Note, with historical comments Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C..
Blyth’s Catalogue is sometimes cited from 1849 and sometimes from 1852. Both dates can be found in Peters’s Check-list, each, in different volumes, appearing to be accepted. Consequently and inconsistently both are found in other works. The cover is dated 1849. The evidence, however, shows that while much was printed in 1849 publication was not before September 1852. Meanwhile Blyth’s ’Supplemental Note’ appeared in 1849. Most of the new taxa described in that were described then to ensure that Blyth’s names, already in his proof sheets for his Catalogue, obtained priority. In Peters’s Check-list most of these names have been cited correctly, i.e. from his Supplemental Note. However, a few exceptions need attention and their dates need to be corrected in...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 57.The authorship of the generic name Gymnoris Naturalis
Gregory, S.M.S..
The currently accepted citation for Gymnoris: J.E. Gray, 1831, is shown to be fundamentally erroneous. The first valid citation is that of Blyth in 1845. However the nominal type species’ name is preoccupied, and the nomen novum of Fringilla xanthocollis E. Burton, 1838, should be associated with it. The correct citation is given in full.
