Spermiogram and Morphological Characteristics in Testicular and Epididymal Spermatozoa of Large White Boar in Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Oyeyemi,Matthew Olugbenga; Ubiogoro,Oniovosa.
Ten healthy male (boar) of large white pigs aged between 6.0 and 18.0 months, were used for this study. Spermiogram and morphological characteristics were studied in testes and in the different parts of the epididymis of the boar. The objective was to study the changes that occur in testes and epididymis during epididymal transit. Progressive motile spermatozoa were first observed in the testes (6-10%) in the caput (20-30%), corpus (40-50%) and highest at the caudal epididymis (85%). Cytoplasmic droplets were lost as the spermatozoa moved up the epididymis. The caput epididymis had a value of 20.05% of abnormal sperm cell, which is different significantly (p<0.5) from 15 80 % of the caudal epididymis. The total abnormal sperm cells in corpus are also...

Seasonal variation in sperm characteristics of boars in southern Uruguay R. Bras. Zootec.
Petrocelli,Hugo; Batista,Carlos; Gosálvez,Jaime.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of season, natural photoperiod, and room temperature at the housing facility on boar semen characteristics in Uruguay (34º66'S; 56º29'W). For this purpose, 117 ejaculates, obtained from eight adult males collected through 12 consecutive months, were assessed for sperm viability, DNA integrity, abnormalities (total, primary, and secondary), ejaculate volume, and sperm concentration. Viability, total and primary abnormalities, volume, and sperm concentration were affected by season. Sperm viability, volume, and sperm concentration were affected by natural photoperiod. In general, autumn and the decreasing photoperiod had a negative impact on most of the semen characteristics, except for volume. Housing...

Insulin addition to swine semen diluted and cooled at 15 ºC R. Bras. Zootec.
Cunha,Evandro César Pereira; Zangeronimo,Márcio Gilberto; Murgas,Luis David Solis; Braga,Douglas Evangelista; Pereira,Bárbara Azevedo; Rocha,Luiz Gustavo Pessoa; Faria,Bruno Generoso; Pereira,Luciano José.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding different doses of insulin to swine semen processed and stored at 15 ºC. The experiment used sixteen ejaculates from four commercial breeding pigs, distributed in a randomized block design (ejaculate) with split plot along time (0, 24, 48 and 72 hours of storage) with four treatments (insulin levels - 0.0 4.0 8.0 and 12.0 IU per dose) and 16 repetitions. The experimental unit was made of two insemination doses of 100 mL each, with 3×10(9) spermatozoids. Insulin used was NPH-human, added at the time of processing the doses. The addition of insulin did not affect motility, sperm viability, the percentage of abnormal cells, the osmotic resistance or the degradation rate of motility in 120...

Modification of the short osmotic resistance test for evaluating the functional integrity of boar spermatozoa Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Nascimento,J.K.F.; Nascimento,E.F.; Melo,M.I.V..
