ABSTRACT Repeatability allows an estimation of the number of evaluations needed to optimize the selection of superior genotypes, with consequent effects on the research costs in terms of financial and human resources. The objective of this study was to estimate the coefficient of repeatability of biometric and yield traits, related to fruits and seeds of sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis), and to define the number of evaluations required for an efficient selection and evaluation of genotypes of the species. A total of 37 non-domesticated accessions were evaluated for 19 months in a randomized block design with 5 replications and 2 plants per plot. The total number of fruits, total number of seeds, total fruit weight, mean fruit weight, and number of seeds... |

ABSTRACT Tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum, is one of the most produced species in Brazilian fish farming, which has boosted the development of new technologies to increase its productivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate production performance in two second-generation tambaqui stocks selectively bred for weight gain in a semi-intensive rearing system and assess its influence on total production cost. We analyzed 300 fish (initial mean weight and standard length of 160 g and 17 cm, respectively) of two families (A and B, 150 fish each). The fish were individually marked with microchips and stocked in an 800-m2 excavated pond. For economic analysis, the obtained performance data were extrapolated for a fish farm with a 10-ha pond, adopting the Total... |

A selection of queens of Melipona scutellaris through the most productive colonies were carried out during eight months in an orange honeyflow. Each of the colonies was evaluated by its production, that is, the gross weight production ( pollen, brood, geopropolis and wax of each hive). With this data a coefficient of repeatability was estimated by the intraclass correlation method, obtained r = 0.835 ± 0.071. The repeatibility is very high showing that the analysed data (production) is repeatable. Selection was then carried out using the regression coefficient of each colony and the respective production gain. Using these data the colonies were divided into three groups according to the method Vencovsky and Kerr (1982): a with the colonies of highest... |

In situ selection of vineyard peach (Prunus pérsica spp. vulgaris Mill.) genotypes was conducted in 2006 and 2007 in the region of Kfusevac (Central Serbia). Identification, observation and recording of the phenological and pomological properties of the highest-quality genotypes were carried out. Twenty-eight genotypes of the highest quality were selected out of 2093 genotypes, based on biological and pomological properties, and compared to those of cv. Redhaven (control). The onset of flowering varied (April 7-21), being early in two genotypes and late in one genotype, as compared to Redhaven, while 25 genotypes showed an intermediate flowering date, as Redhaven did. Campanula flowers were found in six genotypes, as in Redhaven, and the rosaceous type in... |

Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) ate vital fot the brewing industry, as they contribute significantly to the organoleptic qualities of beet, including taste and flavor. Experimental hop breeding data from the Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing (IHPS) were used to create a model based on the multi-attribute decision modeling methodology. The model has 18 attributes hierarchically grouped within four main attributes: Biology, Chemistry, Morphology and Brewing value. Furthermore, utility functions in the model were defined by sets of elementary decision rules throughout the entire hierarchy for all aggregated attributes. The central part of the model contains 144 decision rules, which were specified according to the model users' previous breeding... |

Sterna hirundinacea (Lesson, 1831) is a migratory seabird that breeds in the Pacific Coast (from Peru to Chile) and along the Atlantic coast of South America from Espírito Santo (Brazil) to Terra del Fuego (Argentina). This paper describes the reproductive success of South American Terns on Cardos Island, Florianopolis, Brazil in the breeding seasons of 2003, 2005 and 2006. The colony was formed in mid-May in 2003 and early April in other years, with the total number of nests ranging from 1,852 in 2006 to 2,486 in 2005. Hatching success was estimated at 76.39% in 2006, 62.73% in 2003 and 41.1% in 2005, the lowest value that could be attributed to predation by hawks Caracara plancus, lizards Tupinambis merianae and black vulture Coragyps atratus. The chicks... |

ABSTRACT Profitability of sheep production depends on the reproductive response of ewes and growth of their lambs, which can be improved through the ram genotype. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive response of Blackbelly (Bb), Pelibuey (Pb), Katahdin (Kat) and Dorper (Dor) ewes crossed with Damara (Dam) and Dor rams and the growth of their offspring. To measure percentage of single and multiple lambings (MLP), 234 Bb, Pb, Kat and Dor ewes were used. To measure lamb growth, the offspring of 86 Bb x Pb (BbPb) ewes and 73 Kat x Dor (KatDOR) ewes were used. Four Dor x BbPb, six Dam x BbPb and six Dam x KatDor lambs were slaughtered for carcass assessment. MLP was analyzed with the CATMOD procedure considering the factors age and breed. Lamb... |

This paper describes the length-weight relationship, size at first maturation (L), and breeding season of Poecilia reticulata found in drainage channels on the campus of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in the Brazilian city of Belém. A total of 1.936 specimens (942 males and 994 females) were collected in monthly samples of the study area between June, 2006, and March, 2007. Females were significantly longer and heavier than males. The length-weight relationship for males was established by the equation Pt = 5 × 10-5 × Ct2.397 and for females by Pt = 3 × 10-6 × Ct3.419. The estimated value of L was 17.5 mm for males and 20.4 mm for females, suggesting that males initiate reproductive activity at a smaller size than females. The abundance of mature... |
