Variance components and selection response for feather pecking behaviour were studied by analysing the data from a divergent selection experiment. An investigation show that a Box-Cox transformation with power =-0.2 made the data be approximately normally distributed and fit best by the given model. Variance components and selection response were estimated using Bayesian analysis with Gibbs sampling technique. The total variation was rather large for the two traits in both low feather pecking line (LP) and high feather pecking line (HP). The standard deviation was about three times as large as the mean in the observed scale, and about the same value as the mean in the transformed scale. Based on the mean of marginal posterior distribution, in the Box-Cox... |

In wild salmonid fish, specific individual behavioral traits have been correlated with the timing of fry emergence from their gravel spawning nests; Early emerging fish display more aggressive behavior and have a higher probability of becoming socially dominant, compared to fish that emerge at a later stage. Apart from aggression and dominance, other behavioral and metabolic traits, such as boldness, metabolic rate, or growth, have also been linked to emergence time. Altogether, the traits of early- and late-emerging fish resemble those of the proactive and reactive stress-coping style, respectively. As proactive fish are considered more resilient to stress, it may be desirable to select these for aquaculture production. However, it is currently unclear to... |

The poultry breeding is world wide concentrated in few and large breeding companies and none of them are situated in Nordic countries. Regarding egg laying stock the hybrids offered by these companies are primarily developed in order to produce in cage systems and although they are high producing stock they has some short comings when kept in free range systems in terms of inadequate behaviour, mislaying of eggs and sometimes high mortality. The question of using cages for keeping hens has been a matter of much concern for many people and an animal welfare approaches has lead to regulations in individual countries as well as at the EEC level. In Sweden use of conventional cages was forbidden from 2002 and the EEC has given rules which declare that it... |

The first objective of this study was to map quantitative trait loci (QTL)affecting economically important traits: milk production traits, health traits and fertility traits in the Finnish Ayshire population. The second objective was to investigate the effects of using QTL information in marker-assisted selection (MAS) on the genetic response and the linkage disequilibrium between the different parts of the genome. In conclusion, several QTL affecting economically important traits of dairy cattle were detected. Futher studies are needed to verify these QTL, check their presence in the present breeding population, look for pleiotropy and fine map the most interesting QTL regions. The results of the simulation studies show that using MAS together with... |

Not only the biodiversity of wild species, but also the diversity in livestock is declining rapidly: Out of 6.300 registered livestock breeds in the world 1.250 are endangered or already extinct. In Germany 16 out of 32 cattle breeds are endangered, while three of the most popular cattle breeds make up 92 % of the more than two million herd-book cows. Due to their adaptation to local conditions on first sight many rare and endangered cattle breeds appear to be well suited for organic farming systems, but the percentage of rare breeds on organic farms is not much higher than on conventional ones. Council Regulation (EC) No 1804/1999 on livestock production in organic farming recommends to encourage biological diversity and to favour the use of breeds which... |

In Switzerland cattle are kept in a range of different production systems and environments: From lowland to mountain area, from intensive to extensive feeding systems and from conventional to organic production systems. Some of these environments can be classified as harsh environments. It is assumed that some genotypes affect traits differently in diverging environments. If that would be the case, genotype x environment (GxE) interactions would cause re-rankings of the cattle’s corresponding breeding values in the breeding value list. |

Over the past 40 years, dairy cow breeding has led to very high yielding cows (more than doubled average annual milk yields in most dairying countries), but also to a deterioration in cow health, fertility and longevity (Pryce et al. (1999)). Consequently, many breeding organizations all over the world are seeking to include functional traits in their breeding programmes (Groen et al. (1997), Christensen et al. (1998)). A great amount of research is done on potential index traits for indirect selection for health traits (Groen et al. (1997)). The whole constitution of the animals is to some extent considered in Scandinavian breeding programmes using the epidemiological data of all herd book animals (Philipsson et al. (2000)) and in breeding for life time... |
