| In England and Wales purification tanks are built to comply with broad operating criteria specified by the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food. These have been developed over many years with limited availability of data and has resulted in design restrictions which have limited the economic viability and effectiveness of the tanks. The approved method for the large scale purification of mussels has been to spread them in a single shallow layer in large outdoor tanks with access to a supply of clean sea water. This results in a purification plant that requires a lot of land, is labour intensive and generally remote from the harvesting area. | The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, native to northeast Asia, has been translocated widely for the purpose of aquaculture and is among the most important cultured shellfish. C. gigas has a complex history of introductions in Europe. In France, massive introduction was performed in the early 1970’s, allowing massive spatfall in favourable areas to become the basis of the local oyster industry. In the U.K, hatchery propagation was used to supply local production. | Microscopical investigations of the gut contents of six individuals of Dermochelys coriacea from southern England and the North Sea revealed the presence in all of these of numerous nematocysts, mainly scyphozoan. Only six species of Scyphozoa occur in British shallow waters and in the North Sea, viz., Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål), Chrysaora hysoscella (L.), Aurelia aurita (L.), Cyanea capillata (L.), C. lamarckii (L.) and Rhizostoma octopus (L.). | In considering the use of estuarine habitats by fish assemblages, alternative views of the assemblage are increasingly being explored, based on functional rather than taxonomic aspects.
