Identification of acoustic parameters for broiler welfare estimate REA
Pereira,Erica M.; Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Garcia,Rodrigo G..
Estimates of broiler welfare have subjective character. Nowadays, researchers seek non-invasive features or indicators that may describe this condition in animal production. The aim of this study was to identify acoustic parameters to estimate broiler welfare using the following five vocalization acoustic parameters: energy, spectral centroid, bandwidth, first formant, and second formant. The database that generated the model was obtained from a field experiment with 432 broilers, which half were Cobb® and half, Ross® breed, from day 21 to 42, containing bird vocalizations under either welfare or stress conditions. The results of the experiment generated responses to the tested conditions of gender, genetic strain, and welfare. The proposed model was based...

Factors Affecting the Decision to Adopt and Continue Best Management Practices by Broiler Producers AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Devkota, Nirmala.
We analyzed survey data collected from broiler producers in Louisiana to understand the factors affecting the longevity of best management practices adoption. Results indicated variables such as future expansion potential and the length of time the farm have been with the family decreases the chance of adopting best management practices. Our results support the idea that education and income would have positive results on the entry decision to adopt best management practices.

Climatic Variation: Effects on Stress Levels, Feed Intake, and Bodyweight of Broilers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Osti,R; Bhattarai,D; Zhou,D.
ABSTRACT Chickens tolerate a very narrow range of climatic variation, and therefore, it is essential to determine the most suitable climatic area and weather for broiler production in open-house systems. In this study, 3060 broilers were used as experimental birds to investigate the effects of seasonal differences and climatic variations on the growth performance of broilers reared in an open-house system. Birds were kept under various treatment models that differ in climate Tropic zone, sub tropic zone and temperate zones. Data were recorded during July-August as summer months and January-February as winter months. Collected data was analyzed using the least square procedure given by Harvey-1990. Significantly higher (p<0.05) level of corticosteroids...

Surface temperature distribution in broiler houses Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Baracho,MS; Nääs,IA; Nascimento,GR; Cassiano,JA; Oliveira,KR.
In the Brazilian meat production scenario broiler production is the most dynamic segment. Despite of the knowledge generated in the poultry production chain, there are still important gaps on Brazilian rearing conditions as housing is different from other countries. This research study aimed at analyzing the variation in bird skin surface as function of heat distribution inside broiler houses. A broiler house was virtually divided into nine sectors and measurements were made during the first four weeks of the grow-out in a commercial broiler farm in the region of Rio Claro, São Paulo, Brazil. Rearing ambient temperature and relative humidity, as well as light intensity and air velocity, were recorded in the geometric center of each virtual sector to...

Ammonia emissions in tunnel-ventilated broiler houses Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Lima,KAO; Moura,DJ; Carvalho,TMR; Bueno,LGF; Vercellino,RA.
Gas production in broiler houses and their emissions are closely related to the microclimate established inside the house according to air temperature, humidity, and velocity. Therefore, the internal house environment is influenced by building typology and ventilation system. The objective of the present study was to evaluate ammonia emission rates in broiler houses equipped with different ventilation systems (negative or positive pressure) and litter conditions (new or built-up). The environment of six commercial broiler houses was evaluated internal and external NH3 concentrations. Ventilation rates were recorded to estimate ammonia emission rates. The efficiency of circulation and exhaust fans was assessed, and higher ventilation rates were determined...

Data mining to estimate broiler mortality when exposed to heat wave Scientia Agricola
Vale,Marcos Martinez; Moura,Daniella Jorge de; Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Oliveira,Stanley Robson de Medeiros; Rodrigues,Luiz Henrique Antunes.
Heat waves usually result in losses of animal production since they are exposed to thermal stress inducing an increase in mortality and consequent economical losses. Animal science and meteorological databases from the last years contain enough data in the poultry production business to allow the modeling of mortality losses due to heat wave incidence. This research analyzes a database of broiler production associated to climatic data, using data mining techniques such as attribute selection and data classification (decision tree) to model the impact of heat wave incidence on broiler mortality. The temperature and humidity index (THI) was used for screening environmental data. The data mining techniques allowed the development of three comprehensible...

Noise analysis to evaluate chick thermal comfort Scientia Agricola
Moura,Daniella Jorge de; Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Alves,Elaine Cangussu de Souza; Carvalho,Thayla Morandi Ridolfi de; Vale,Marcos Martinez do; Lima,Karla Andrea Oliveira de.
The relationship between thermal environment and chick performance has widely been evaluated, however the consideration that the assessment of the comfort may be estimated by interpreting both amplitude and frequency of bird vocalization under tropical housing conditions is a new concept. This research had as objective of estimating thermal comfort for chicks during the heating phase using this new concept. An experiment was carried out inside a climate controlled chamber (A) for establishing the behavioral pattern related to environmental temperature limits. Forty five chicks were reared inside a 2.3 m² box. A video camera was placed 2.0 m above the birds and the images were captured and registered in a computer. From the pattern determined in the...
