The aim of the study was to examine the changes in milk fatty acid (FA) profile of grazing buffaloes fed either low (L, 276g/d) or high (H, 572g/d) doses of a blend (70:30, wt/wt) of soybean and linseed oils. Fourteen multiparous Mediterranean buffaloes grazing on a native pasture were fed 4 kg/day of a commercial concentrate containing no supplemental oil over a pre-experimental period of ten days. The baseline milk production and composition and milk FA profile were measured over the last three days. After this pre-experimental period the animals received the same concentrate added with either the L or H oil doses for 26 additional days. Milk yield (g/animal/day) did not differ at the start (1776 ± 522 and 1662 ± 291 for L and H, respectively,... |

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to establish the biochemical parameters of the abaxial wall, dorsal wall and sole of the hoof of the medial thoracic, lateral, and medial pelvic digits of buffalos. The hoof samples were subjected to destructive biochemical analyses to identify the dry material (DM), mineral matter (MM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE) contents. Sulfur (S), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels were determined based on nondestructive biochemical analyses. The parameters of dry material, mineral matter, organic matter, crude protein and ether extract of hoof capsule of the digits of buffalos can be determined by means of both destructive and nondestructive... |

ABSTRACT: This report aimed to describe the clinical, epidemiological and pathological aspects of an outbreak of rabies in buffaloes in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. Seven out of 41 buffaloes from the same farm became fatally ill; they showed the clinical signs of ataxia, ascending paresis, and paralysis of the limbs. During necropsy, marked hyperemia of the leptomeningeal vessels, and severe distention of the urinary bladder were noted. Histologically, there were indications of nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis and ganglioneuritis with intracytoplasmic and eosinophilic inclusion bodies in the neurons. The fluorescent antibody test was positive for rabies. Viral antigens were also detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in sections of the cerebellum.... |

The objective of the present study was to compare the performance of three serological tests for diagnosis of Brucella abortus infections in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). Serum samples collected from 696 adult females were submitted to the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA-C), (I-ELISA), fluorescence polarization test (FPA), 2-mercaptoethanol test (2-ME) and complement fixation test (CFT). The gold standard was the combination of CFT and 2-ME, considering as positive the reactors in both CFT and 2-ME, and as negative those non-reactors. ROC analyses were done for C-ELISA, I-ELISA and FPA and the Kappa agreement index were also calculated. The best combinations of relative sensitivity (SEr) and relative specificity (SPr) and Kappa were... |

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to use ultrasound spectroscopy for the determination of the physical-chemical characteristics of buffalo milk and compare it to theinfrared method. Levels of fat, protein, lactose and non-fat solids (NFS) were determined in milk samples of 22 buffaloes (n = 383) with initial milk production of 6.97 ± 1.55 litres. The respective average results for the fat, protein, lactose and NFS of the individual samples were 6.31%, 3.81%, 4.99% and 9.75% for the infrared method-PO ANA 009 and 7.16%, 2.5%, 6.28% and 9.41% using ultrasound spectroscopy. There were significant differences (P<0.0001) in the levels of all of the components analysed between the two methods studied. Results obtained in the analyses using the ultrasonic milk... |

Caseins comprise make up about 80% of the total protein content of milk and present polymorphism with changes in the amino acid sequence. Within this abundance of proteins, kappa-casein is noteworthy, since it has been associated with differences in milk yield, composition and processing. The objective of this study was to observe the existence of polymorphism in the kappa-casein gene in female buffaloes. For this purpose, blood samples from 115 female buffaloes, collected with vacutainer by needle punctionure of the jugular vein, were used. for genomic DNA extraction was done from blood samples. The PCR-RFLP and SSCP techniques demonstrated that the studied animals were monomorphic for the kappa-casein gene. Only allele B was observed in these animals,... |

We investigated the occurrence of Factor XI (FXI) deficiency syndrome in the following Indian dairy animals: Bos taurus Holstein-Friesian and Jersey cattle, Bos indicus Indian cattle breeds, B. taurus x B. indicus crossbreds and the river buffalo Bubalus bubalis. Factor XI deficiency is an autosomal recessive bleeding disorder known to affect Holstein cattle worldwide. A total of 1001 dairy animals, mainly bulls, were genotyped to detect the mutation within exon 12 of the gene encoding for factor XI. Two Holstein bulls were detected as heterozygous (carrier) for FXI deficiency, giving a carrier frequency of 0.6% in Indian Holstein cattle. None of the other cattle or buffalo breeds was found to be a carrier for FXI. Sequence comparison between normal and... |
