Relacionamento entre anfíbios anuros e bromélias da restinga de Regência, Linhares, Espírito Santo, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Schineider,José Alberto P.; Teixeira,Rogério L..
Some anuran amphibians use the bromeliads during the entire life cycle and others only as diurnal shelter. At the sandy coastal plain of Linhares, State of Espírito Santo, Southeastern Brazil, 676 bromeliads were examined, of which 303 of Aechmea blanchetiana (Baker) L. B. Smith., 1955, 287 of Aechmea nudicaulis (L.) Griseb., 1864, and 86 of Vrisea procera (Mart. Ex Schult. f.) Wittm, 1891. The morphometric and physical-chemical analysis of different bromeliads evidenced variations among plants. During the period sampled, six anuran species were found inside the plant axils. The hylid frog Phyllodytes luteolus (Wied, 1824) was the most abundant species (260 specimens). Its abundance was higher in the epiphyte bromeliad Vrisea procera. Phyllodytes luteolus...

Protein identification from the parotoid macrogland secretion of Duttaphrynus melanostictus J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Mariano,Douglas Oscar Ceolin; Messias,Marcela Di Giacomo; Spencer,Patrick Jack; Pimenta,Daniel Carvalho.
ABSTRACT Background: Bufonid parotoid macrogland secretion contains several low molecular mass molecules, such as alkaloids and steroids. Nevertheless, its protein content is poorly understood. Herein, we applied a sample preparation methodology that allows the analysis of viscous matrices in order to examine its proteins. Methods: Duttaphrynus melanostictus parotoid macrogland secretion was submitted to ion-exchange batch sample preparation, yielding two fractions: salt-displaced fraction and acid-displaced fraction. Each sample was then fractionated by anionic-exchange chromatography, followed by in-solution proteomic analysis. Results: Forty-two proteins could be identified, such as acyl-CoA-binding protein, alcohol dehydrogenase, calmodulin,...

On The Identity Of Some Toads Of The Genus Bufo From Ecuador, With Additional Remarks On Andinophryne Colomai Hoogmoed, 1985 (Amphibia: Anura: Bufonidae). Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
Study of the type specimens of B. caeruleostictus Günther, 1859 and B. chanchanensis Fowler, 1913, and of fresh material showed that B. chanchanensis is a junior subjective synonym of B. caeruleostictus. Probably it is a member of the B. guttatus group. B. caeruleocellatus Fowler, 1913 is a junior subjective synonym of B. haematiticus Cope, 1862. New material of B. hypomelas Boulenger, 1913 is reported from NW Ecuador, the species is redescribed, and it is shown that this is a valid taxon, not the juvenile of B. blombergi Myers & Funkhouser, 1951 as suggested by Lynch, in Frost (1985). It is doubted whether B. intermedius Günther originates from Ecuador. It probably is a Central American or Mexican species of the B. valliceps Wiegmann, 1833 group. A...

Short notes and reviews Bidder’s organ in the female of Bufo ictericus: morphological characterization Naturalis
Farias, C.F.; Brito-Gitirana, L. de; Carvalho-e-Silva, S.P..
Bidder’s organ has been cited as a structure present only in males of the toad family Bufonidae, and is used as a systematic characteristic. In this study, we examined females of Bufo ictericus in order to ascertain whether this structure also occurs in females. Macroscopic observations and light microscopy technique for paraffin embedding were performed. This study reveals that females of Bufo ictericus can have a Bidder’s organ with typical morphology, and in close spatial relationship with the ovary. This suggests that the Bidder’s organ is not an exclusive structure for male toads, but that it may also occur in active females.

New Osornophryne (Amphibia: Anura: Bufonidae) from the Atlantic Versant of the Andes in Ecuador Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
Two species of the little known genus Osornophryne are described from the Atlantic (Amazonian) versant of the Andes in Ecuador. O. guacamayo spec. nov. occurs at 2100 m, has well developed cranial ridges, rather peculiar feet with toes IV and V of about equal length and much longer than the others. It is rather gaudily patterned with black and yellow. O. antisana spec. nov. occurs at 3600 m and has a pointed snout, indistinct cranial ridges and is rather drably coloured. The single available adult male has a cloacal tube that runs down the back of the thighs and opens ventrally. It is speculated that this peculiar structure is indicative of internal fertilization. It is concluded that inguinal amplexus in this genus is not a primitive, but an advanced...

Una nueva especie de sapo del género Osornophryne (Anura: Bufonidae) de las estribaciones amazónicas de los Andes de Ecuador Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Mueses-Cisneros,Jonh Jairo; Yánez-Muñoz,Mario Humberto; Guayasamin,Juan M..

Effects of temperature and volume of water on the growth and development of tadpoles of Pleurodema diplolister and Rhinella granulosa (Amphibia: Anura) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Maciel,Thely A.; Juncá,Flora A..
The capacity of tadpoles to reduce their metamorphosis time and body size in response to fluctuations in environmental variables of temporary ponds has been recorded in field and laboratory studies. The main alterations in this habitat are related to the decrease of the water level and increase in temperature. However, few studies tried to dissociate the effect of these two variables. The aim of the present study was to analyze simultaneously the effects of water volume reduction and temperature on the development and growth in tadpoles of Pleurodema diplolister (Peters, 1870) and Rhinella granulosa (Spix, 1824) - species that use temporary ponds for reproduction. The tadpoles of these two species were subject to four treatments: (1) constant volume of...
