A review of the fossil and subfossil avian record kept in Bulgaria is presented. The only collection of fossil birds in Bulgaria was established in the 1980s. 99.6% originates from 98 localities throughout Bulgaria. Foreign fossils originate from Azerbaijan, Greece, Hungary, Namibia and New Zealand. Bulgarian avian fossil and subfossil records in collections outside the country are found in museums in France, Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom. In August 2003 the collection numbered 13,848 bones, two casts and one eggshell representing 349 taxa. Taxonomic composition includes: 22 fossil species, one fossil subspecies, one subfossil species, one subfossil subspecies and at least 160 recent species. The Palaearctic species Caenopachys hartigii (Ratzeburg, 1848) has been collected in the National Park of Pollino (S Italy), which is the first exact confirmation for the Italian fauna. A brief nomenclatural history of the genus Caenopachys Foerster, 1862, is given, its status is discussed and it is elevated from synonymy. The type species is re-described and illustrated; a key to both West Palaearctic species is given, and some biological notes are added. |

The European species of the subgenus Aliolus Say, 1836, of the genus Eubazus Nees, 1814, and of the genus Dicyrtaspis van Achterberg, 1980 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Brachistinae) are reviewed. The identity of Triaspis thomsoni Fahringer, 1934, and the interpretation by S˘ noflák (1953) are discussed. A lectotype is designated for T. thomsoni, a neotype for the types species of Aliolus Say, 1836 (Bracon trilobatus Say, 1836) and T. thomsoni sensu Šnoflák is described as a new species (Eubazus nigroventralis spec. nov.) from Bulgaria, Germany and Czech Republic. Two new species of the E. lepidus-group are described and illustrated (E. punctifer cpec. nov. from Bulgaria and E. planifacialis spec. nov. from The Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden). In addition, a... |

In 2009, a big market research has been carried out by Vitosha research company, including 120 producers, retailers and wide number of consumers. This research is a huge document written on 273 pages with a lot of analyses, the most important of which is SWOT analysis of organic market in Bulgaria. Main conclusions from SWOT analysis are: Bulgaria has sufficient objective conditions to become a serious player in the bioproduction. As a serious potential can be reported the presence of a suitable environment and agricultural soils that could be adapted to organic farming. Regulations of organic production, and import and export of such products are clearly regulated and aligned with European requirements. Problems facing the bioproduction are more of... |

This article analyses the development of organic agriculture (OA) in Bulgaria. It especially examines the actors, relations, and structures that shape organic sector policies. The Bulgarian case shows that sectorial agricultural policies can originate without the direct representation of farmers. Due to the dominance of consultancy NGOs and academic institutions in the policy network, OA first appeared as a political rather than as an economic or social and agricultural topic. However, this specificity contributed to the weak development of the organic sector in the country. Ultimately, farmers became engaged in the policy network for the benefit of the sector when the EU implemented organic subsidies. The article is based on both qualitative and... |

The statistical data of the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture show an certified growing area of 9 370 ha in near 80 farm holdings for organic plant production, 2 in mixed plant and animal production and 5 organic livestock breeding farms. Much bigger area of ca. 155 793 ha is certified grassland and protected areas for wild collection of herbs and wild berries. The average agricultural holdings cover 0,5 ha. Two hubs in South and North Bulgaria launched the pilot Organic Herbs initiative in an UNDP JOBS project at the end of 2002. Now 8 support centers have nurseries for organic seeds and seedlings, trail plots, demonstration and production fields, driers and primary processing facilities. The main products are sage, lemon balm, peppermint,... |

The market of organic products is developing all over the world at all levels. In Europe, America and Asia the rate of development has been impressive for years. Considerable efforts have been made in many countries with a relatively new or emerging organic sector to establish organic products on the market. In relation to this the export is not the only target for these activities – the local, regional and national opportunities are interesting and well understood alternatives. This Manual is aimed at organic food producers, processors and sellers to facilitate their activity. It contains existing data about the development of organic agriculture around the world, in Europe and in Bulgaria. Its aim is to provide information about the preferences of... |
