A 5-year cotton–wheat rotation field experiment was conducted on two alkaline-calcareous soils to investigate the impact of integrated nutrient-management and crop-residue incorporation on soil physical and hydrological properties. The nutrient treatments were: T1–farmers' fertilizer use; T2–balanced nutrient management (recommended N, P, Zn. and B from mineral sources); T3–integrated nutrient management, same as T2, except that 75% N was applied from fertilizer and 25% as FYM; and T4 same as T2, except that every alternate year, wheat was substituted by Berseem green manure. All treatments were compared with and without crop residue incorporation. Soil organic matter (SOM) content in both the soils was significantly increased with T2, T3 and T4 as... |

Beans crop is an agricultural staple largely consumed in Brazil because it is part of the basic food of the population. Such a crop is usually grown by small growers and turns out to be of a great social and economical importance. The aim of the current manuscript was to scrutinize the effect of soil water status on its physical attributes, such as bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, hydraulic conductivity under protected environment conditions on beans crop (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The effect of the soil physical attributes on the biological response of the plants was also investigated. The experiment was installed in March of 2016 in a greenhouse. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme with four... |

This research was carried out to determine some physical, mechanical, mineral and proximate properties of miracle berry fruits (Synsepalum dulcificum L.) in the moisture range of 6.45− 9.73% (db). Physical properties including bulk density and terminal velocity were determined using standard methods. Mechanical properties including stiffness and deformation were determined using quasi-static compression analysis. Proximate and mineral compositions of the fruit including crude protein and calcium contents were determined using standard analytical methods. Results showed that the terminal velocity, stiffness, crude protein, calcium contents decreased generally with an increase in the moisture content (p < 0.05). The average values of the terminal... |

Abstract: Information on physical properties of broiler chickens diets is not available in literatures and such information is important for design and construction of poultry equipments. Some physical properties of starter, grower and finisher diet of broiler chickens, namely: gravimetrical (bulk density, true density and porosity) and frictional properties (coefficient of friction filling angle of repose, empting angle of repose and pouring angle of repose) were studied. Effect of height of falling diets to the containers at 150, 250 and 350 mm and volume of the containers at 500, 600, 1,100 and 2,000 mL on bulk density and porosity of diets were studied. Results indicated that true density of the starter; grower and finisher diets were 1,442.574,... |

In the study, effects of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) treatment and maturity stages on physico-mechanical and chemical properties of fruit of plum fruit (Prunus domestica cv. ‘President’) was investigated. The effect AVG doses for each maturity stage on geometric mean diameter and surface area of plum fruit was statistically significant. Geometric mean diameter and surface area were higher on 4 August harvest date than the other harvest dates. The effect AVG doses on the fruit volume and fruit mass of plum fruit were statistically significant for each maturity stage. While L*, b*, and C* color characteristics of plum fruit for all AVG treatments increased according to maturity stages. The effect of AVG treatments on the fruit removal force (FRF) and fruit... |

ABSTRACT Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a commercial seed crop grown for its good yield of high-quality oil. It is tolerant to water stress but may be sensitive to soil compaction. The aim of this study was to assess safflower growth under different degrees of soil compaction at depths of 0.15 m to 0.20 m. The experiment was carried out in PVC pots constructed from three rings. Five levels of penetration resistance (0.20, 0.33, 0.50, 0.93, and 1.77 MPa) were applied in the intermediate ring, and two safflower genotypes, IMA-4904 and IMA-2106, were examined. There was no difference between safflower genotypes with respect to their resistance to soil compaction, which reduced root length density in the compacted layer and changed the root... |

The objective of this study was determine the resistance to penetration (PR), least limiting water range (LLWR) and critical bulk density (Db-crit) for soybean yield in a medium-textured oxisol (Haplustox). The treatments represented the soil compaction by passing a tractor over the site 0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 times, with 4 replications in a randomized experimental design. Samples were collected from 0.02-0.05, 0.07-0.10 and 0.15-0.18 m depths. Soybean (Glycine max cv. Embrapa 48) was sowed in December 2002. Plant height, number of pods, aerial dry matter, weight of 100 seeds, and the yield in 3.6 m² plots were recorded. Soybean yield started reduction at the PR of 0.85 MPa and Db of 1.48 Mg m-3. The LLWR was limited in highest part by water content at field... |

The objective of this study was to assess the physical attributes of a kaolinitic oxisol, medium texture (Haplustox) and an oxidic oxisol, clayey (Eutrustox) under different usage systems, localized in the region of Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. The usage systems were sugarcane, cotton and forest. Parameters such as soil bulk density, total porosity, macro and microporosity at the depths of 0.0-0.1; 0.1-0.2; 0.2-0.3, and 0.3-0.4 m were evaluated. Haplustox showed greater bulk density and smaller total porosity, macro and microporosity. The usage increased the bulk density in 0.0-0.3 m depth, with greater effects on the kaolinitic oxisol, mainly in 0.1-0.2 m depth in the areas cultivated with sugarcane. |

Initial soil conditions, operational aspects, and tool shape affect the efficiency of soil decompaction. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a winged scarifier as a function of soil compaction and edaphic water content. The experiment was carried out in a typical Hapludoll. Treatments considered two soil compaction levels: high (HC) and low compaction (LC); and three soil water contents: wet (WS), humid (HS), and dry (DS) with 9, 14, and 19% gravimetric water content, respectively. A split-plot randomized block design was applied. Tractive effort, disturbed area, tillage depth, specific resistance, and power were evaluated. Results showed that tractive effort was 17% greater in HC than LC, and in both cases HS was greater than WS... |

ABSTRACT: Cover crops may have direct or indirect effects on the physical and chemicalsoil attributes; these cropsplay a key role in the cycling of nutrients in the soil and add labile organic carbon, bringing economic and environmental benefits to the system. To study the effect of cover crops on the physical and chemical properties of an Oxisol, a three-year experiment was conducted in a commercial vineyard located at Epagri’s Experimental Station in Videira, SC, Brazil. Different winter species (white clover, red clover, common vetch, turnip, corn spurrey, black oat, rye, and ryegrass) were sown in addition to treatments with manual weeding or mechanical mowing. Certain chemical and physical attributes of soil were determined in samples collected... |
