Spatial Disaggregation of Agricultural Production Data AgEcon
Howitt, Richard E.; Reynaud, Arnaud.
In this paper we develop a dynamic data-consistent way for estimating agricultural land use choices at a disaggregate level (district-level), using more aggregate data (regional-level). The disaggregation procedure requires two steps. The first step consists in specifying and estimating a dynamic model of land use at the regional level. In the second step, we disaggregate outcomes of the aggregate model using maximum entropy (ME). The ME disaggregation procedure is applied to a sample of California data. The sample includes 6 districts located in Central Valley and 8 possible crops, namely: Alfalfa, Cotton, Field, Grain, Melons, Tomatoes, Vegetables and Subtropical. The disaggregation procedure enables the recovery of land use at the district-level with an...

Comparison of Risk Between Cropping Systems in Eastern Norway AgEcon
Lien, Gudbrand D.; Flaten, Ola; Schumann, Keith D.; Richardson, James W.; Korsaeth, Audun; Eltun, Ragnar.
The aim of this study was to compare production and policy risk of organic, integrated and conventional cropping systems in Norway. Experimental cropping system data (1991-1999) from eastern Norway were combined with budgeted data. Empirical distributions of total farm income for different cropping systems were estimated with a simulation model that uses a multivariate kernel density function to smooth the limited experimental data. Stochastic efficiency with respect to a function (SERF) was used to rank the cropping systems for farmers with various risk aversion levels. The results show that the organic system had the greatest net farm income variability, but the existing payment system and organic price premiums makes it the most economically viable...

Nonlinear Properties of Multifactor Financial Models AgEcon
Chen, Kim Heng; Jandhyala, Venkata K.; Fotopoulos, Stergios B..
This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the nonlinear properties of multifactor pricing models. Beginning with the generalized geometric Brownian motion, we develop a method whereby the log returns of a set of d-assets or portfolios admit a scale mixture model. This is followed by an analytical study on the conditional behavior of a subset of assets given another subset. Expressions for the first two conditional moments are provided under the scale mixture family. The regression equation when the scaling variable is constant (unity) corresponds with the renowned APT. Computable conditional moment expressions for the scaling variable are derived under both inverse gamma and gamma distributions. These moment equations are nonlinear in parameters,...

Measuring Technical Efficiency of Dairy Farms with Imprecise Data: A Fuzzy Data Envelopment Analysis Approach AgEcon
Mugera, Amin W..
This article integrates fuzzy set theory in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) framework to compute technical efficiency scores when input and output data are imprecise. The underlying assumption in convectional DEA is that inputs and outputs data are measured with precision. However, production agriculture takes place in an uncertain environment and, in some situations, input and output data may be imprecise. We present an approach of measuring efficiency when data is known to lie within specified intervals and empirically illustrate this approach using a group of 34 dairy producers in Pennsylvania. Compared to the convectional DEA scores that are point estimates, the computed fuzzy efficiency scores allow the decision maker to trace the performance of a...

Growth and deposition of body components of intermediate and high performance broilers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Henn,JD; Bockor,L; Ribeiro,AML; Coldebella,A; Kessler,A de M.
The objectives of the present study were to determine the parameters of Gompertz equations and to determine curves and growth rate, feed intake and body component deposition, as well as allometric coefficients of body water, protein, and fat relative to live weight of male and female broilers of intermediate performance (C44) and high performance (Cobb-500) genetic strains. In total, 384 one-d-old chicks were distributed into four treatments: male Cobb 500, male C44, female Cobb 500, and female C44, with six replicates of 16 birds, according to a completely randomized experimental design. Average body weight, weight gain, and feed intake were weekly determined, and six birds, representing the average weight of each treatment, were sacrificed to determine...
