IL-6 and IL-8 in cerebrospinal fluid from patients with aseptic meningitis and bacterial meningitis: their potential role as a marker for differential diagnosis BJID

Cytokines are molecules that act as mediators of immune response; cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) IL-6 is found in all meningeal inflammatory diseases, but IL-8 is associated with acute bacterial meningitis (ABM). A case control study was done to ascertain the discriminatory power of these cytokines in differentiating ABM from aseptic meningitis (AM); IL-6 and IL-8 CSF concentrations were tested through ELISA in samples collected from patients who underwent investigation for meningitis. Sixty patients, 18 with AM, nine with bacteriologic confirmed ABM and 33 controls, assisted in 2005 (MA and controls) and 2007 (ABM) were included. Contrast sensitivity to angular frequency stimuli is higher than that for sinewave gratings in the respective middle range BJMBR
This study compares contrast thresholds for sinewave gratings, or spatial frequencies (1/CSF) with contrast thresholds for angular frequencies (1/aCSF) and for radial frequencies, or J0 targets (1/rCSF). Observers had to differentiate between one of these frequency stimuli and a stimulus at mean luminance within a forced-choice procedure. All measurements were made with the same equipment, methods and subjects. Our results show higher sensitivity to, or lower thresholds for, angular frequencies when compared to either sinewave gratings or J0 targets. Contrast values in arbitrary units, in the lower threshold range for angular frequencies, were about half those required to differentiate sinewave gratings from mean luminance in its most sensitive range

"Margarita" CSF virus isolate (Cuba, 1958) was characterized from the antigenic, biological and molecular point of view; adapted on PK-15 and SK-6 cell lines with an infective titer of 10(7.5) DICT50, and biologically cloned by limit dilution keeping its pathogenicity in pigs. Genotyping of this virus was made and its phylogenetic relationship with another strain deposited at the GenBank was determined keeping located in the 1.2 sub-group very close related with the field isolates from the 1993-2006 epidemic in Cuba. Its antigenic behavior was similar to the "Alfort" strain, showing no reactivity to MAbss against vaccine strains.
