Eddies in the greenland sea observed from infrared and visible satellite radiometry ArchiMer
Mitchelsonjacob, G.
The complex dynamical structure of the Greenland Sea and its associated mesoscale processes can be observed in satellite imagery. Intense temperature gradients, e. g. between the East Greenland Current and the West Spitsbergen Current, are detected by infrared radiometry, as is the mesoscale activity associated with these fronts. Ocean colour data showing variations in phytoplankton biomass depict the underlying physical processes of the Greenland Sea. The variability in spatial scales of these features can be estimated from radiometry data. The highest pigment concentrations (> 20 mug l-1) are observed in the colder water close to the marginal ice zone (MIZ) which is clearly visible in the near-infrared data.

South equatorial current of the indian-ocean - a 50-day oscillation ArchiMer
Heywood, Kj; Barton, Ed; Allen, Gl.
Observations of a fifty-day oscillation in the meridional component of the South Equatorial Current in the Western Indian Ocean are presented. Currents measured in 4000 m of water close to the atoll of Aldabra (46-degrees-E, 9-degrees-S) reveal the oscillation throughout the water column to a depth of 3 000 m. Further evidence of the oscillation is presented in shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) sections and in Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) imagery. The oscillations are consistent with a zonally propagating Rossby wave caused by shear instability in the zonal flow of the South Equatorial Current.
