Nutritional ecology of blowflies (Diptera, Calliphoridae): estimates of critical larval weight for pupation on two different Rev. Bras. entomol.
Ribeiro,Cássio da Silva; Von Zuben,Cláudio José.
Under natural environmental conditions, blowflies utilize discrete and ephemeral feeding resources such as decaying carcasses. Competition for food on such feeding substrates is usually very severe, and only the individuals that are capable of attaining the critical larval weight for pupation will be able to survive. This critical weight is hitherto unknown for several blowfly species; therefore, the current work is aimed at obtaining such a critical value for four blowfly species of the genera Chrysomya and Lucilia, deploying two types of feeding substrate, namely, artificial diet and macerated bovine meat. On the whole, the critical weights ranged from 30 to 35 mg. The lowest larval weight which permitted pupation was 30.0 mg for Chrysomya megacephala...

Species composition and seasonal succession of saprophagous calliphorids in a rural area of Córdoba: Argentina Biol. Res.
BATTAN HORENSTEIN,MOIRA; LINHARES,ARICIO X; ROSSO,BEATRIZ; GARCÍA,MARÍA D.
During 2004, four experiments were carried out, one each season, in order to determine the species composition and seasonal dynamics of Calliphoridae in a rural area of Córdoba (Argentina). Two pigs (Sus seroja L.), weighing approximately 8 Kg each, were used in each experiment. They were killed with a blow to the head and immediately placed in a variant of the Schoenly et al. (1991) trap. One pig was exposed in the shade and the other one under direct sunlight. The insect fauna was collected daily during the four first weeks and every two or three days thereafter. A total of 16.609 adults of Calliphoridae were collected, and later on identified as one of the following seven species: Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann), Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius),...

Effects on microhymenopteran progeny of different host exposure periods (Chrysomya megacephala, Calliphoridae) to the parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) BABT
Mello,Renata da Silva; Borja,Gonzalo Efrain Moya; Coelho,Valéria Magalhães Aguiar.
To test the assumption that exposure of the host to parasitoid for long periods could provoke superparasitism, the aim of this work was to test the consequences on the immature development time, productivity of parasitoids per pupa, sex ratio and rate of parasitism of Nasonia vitripennis bred in Chrysomya megacephala pupae. Each individual pupa was placed in a glass tube with one parasitoid female for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h period of exposure, under controlled laboratory conditions. Twenty replicates of each period were performed. ANOVA with a 5% significance level was applied. The 72 h exposure caused the immature development time to increase. The mean parasitoids emergence per pupa did not vary significantly with the time of exposure. There were a...
