Analysis of the molecular basis of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri pathogenesis in Citrus limon Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Siciliano,Florencia; Torres,Pablo; Sendín,Lorena; Bermejo,Carolina; Filippone,Paula; Vellice,Gabriel; Ramallo,Jackie; Castagnaro,Atilio; Vojnov,Adrian; Marano,María Rosa.
Xanthomonas axonopodis pathovar citri (Xac) causes bacterial citrus canker, a serious disease of most citrus species. Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is the causal agent of black rot disease in cruciferous plants. In Xcc, cell-cell signaling is mediated by diffusible signal factor (DSF). Synthesis of DSF depends on RpfB and RpfF. DSF perception and signal transduction have been suggested to involve a two-component system comprising RpfC and RpfG. It has been proposed that these proteins participate in a signal transduction system linking changes in the environment to the synthesis of DSF and the expression of virulence genes. Although the cluster of the rpf genes in Xac has synteny with the corresponding cluster in Xcc, two genes (rpfH and...

Resolving the Diplodia complex on apple and other Rosaceae hosts Naturalis
Phillips, A.J.L.; Lopes, J.; Abdollahzadeh, J.; Bobev, S.; Alves, A..
Diplodia species are known as pathogens on many woody hosts, including fruit trees, worldwide. In this study a collection of Diplodia isolates obtained mostly from apple and other Rosaceae hosts were identified based on morphological characters and DNA sequence data from ITS and EF1-α loci. The results show that the diversity of species associated with twig and branch cankers and fruit rot of apples is larger than previously recognised. Four species were identified, namely D. seriata and D. malorum (which is here reinstated for isolates with D. mutila-like conidia). Diplodia intermedia sp. nov. is closely related to D. seriata, and D. bulgarica sp. nov. is morphologically and phylogenetically distinct from all Diplodia species reported from apples.

Diaporthe diversity and pathogenicity revealed from a broad survey of grapevine diseases in Europe Naturalis
Guarnaccia, V.; Groenewald, J.Z.; Woodhall, J.; Armengol, J.; Cinelli, T.; Eichmeier, A.; Ezra, D.; Fontaine, F.; Gramaje, D.; Gutierrez-Aguirregabiria, A.; Kaliterna, J.; Kiss, L.; Larignon, P.; Luque, J.; Mugnai, L.; Naor, V.; Raposo, R.; Sándor, E.; Váczy, K.Z.; Crous, P.W..
Species of Diaporthe are considered important plant pathogens, saprobes, and endophytes on a wide range of plant hosts. Several species are well-known on grapevines, either as agents of pre- or post-harvest infections, including Phomopsis cane and leaf spot, cane bleaching, swelling arm and trunk cankers. In this study we explore the occurrence, diversity and pathogenicity of Diaporthe spp. associated with Vitis vinifera in major grape production areas of Europe and Israel, focusing on nurseries and vineyards. Surveys were conducted in Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Spain and the UK. A total of 175 Diaporthe strains were isolated from asymptomatic and symptomatic shoots, branches and trunks. A multi-locus phylogeny was established...

Closely-related Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri isolates trigger distinct histological and transcriptional responses in Citrus limon Scientia Agricola
Orce,Ingrid Georgina; Debes,Mario; Sendín,Lorena; Luque,Ana; Arias,Marta; Vojnov,Adrián; Marano,María; Castagnaro,Atilio; Filippone,María Paula.
ABSTRACT Citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), has an important economic impact on the citrus industry. Extensive information is available about the disease but, nevertheless, the study of plant-pathogen interactions could provide new information in the understanding of citrus canker disease. A new isolate has been identified, Xcc AT, which has a high genetic similarity (> 90 %) to the virulent Xcc T strain based on genetic clustering analyses of the rep-PCR fingerprinting patterns, but it does not produce cankerous lesions in Citrus limon. In this study, we compared C. limon responses to Xcc AT and to the virulent Xcc T strain at both histological and transcriptional levels. Histologically, leaves inoculated with Xcc AT...

Edge effect compensation for citrus canker lesion detection due to light source variation – a hyperspectral imaging application CIGR Journal
Niphadkar, Nikhil P.; Burks, Thomas F.; Qin, Jianwei; Ritenour, Mark.
The spread of citrus canker has become one of the most important challenges faced by Florida Fresh Market citrus is affecting the export of citrus fruits to several international markets including European countries.  Previous studies have shown that automated detection systems can help detect citrus canker infected fruit and could assist in eliminating the detected fruit from shipment to closed markets.  Most automated detection systems use some form of machine vision with artificial light sources.  However, when capturing images of spherical objects, non-uniform illumination results in an edge blackening effect resulting in higher misclassification rate.  The basic objective of this research was to implement a compensation algorithm to eliminate the edge...

An inexpensive open-source ultrasonic sensing system for monitoring liquid levels CIGR Journal
Fisher, Daniel K.; Sui, Ruixiu.
Liquid levels are measured in a variety of agricultural applications, and are often measured manually, which can be time-consuming and labor-intensive.  Rapid advances in electronic technologies have made a variety of inexpensive sensing, monitoring, and control capabilities available.  A monitoring system was developed and evaluated for automatic measurement of liquid levels, and demonstrated by monitoring water levels in evaporation pans used in evaporation studies and irrigation scheduling.  The system is composed of an ultrasonic sensor, a microcontroller-based data logger, and a temperature sensor.  The ultrasonic sensor measures the distance from the sensor to the liquid surface.  Air temperature is measured by the temperature sensor, and is used to...
