Forage production of elephant grass under intermittent stocking PAB
Chaves,Carla Silva; Gomide,Carlos Augusto de Miranda; Ribeiro,Karina Guimarães; Paciullo,Domingos Sávio Campos; Ledo,Francisco José da Silva; Costa,Igor de Almeida; Campana,Ludmila Lacerda.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the dry matter production of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) genotypes, managed under intermittent stocking. A completely randomized design was used, with two genotypes and three replicates. The treatments consisted of factorial combinations (2x2x2) of genotypes ('BRS Kurumi' and the clone CNPGL 00‑1‑3), two light interception levels (LI) at the onset of grazing (90 and 95%), and two post‑grazing canopy heights (30 and 50 cm). A total of 24 Holstein x Zebu crossbred heifers were used. The stocking density varied in order to finish the grazing periods in two days. The interval between the defoliation, based on 95% LI, resulted in a higher leaf mass per grazing cycle. The post‑grazing height of 30 cm did not...

Animal performance and sward characteristics of two cultivars of Brachiaria brizantha (BRS Paiaguás and BRS Piatã) R. Bras. Zootec.
Euclides,Valéria Pacheco Batista; Montagner,Denise Baptaglin; Barbosa,Rodrigo Amorim; Valle,Cacilda Borges do; Nantes,Nayana Nazareth.
ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to evaluate live weight gain per animal and per area and its relationship with the characteristics of pastures of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Paiaguás and Piatã. A randomized blocks experimental design was used, with two treatments and six replicates. The experimental area was 8.0 ha, divided into twelve paddocks of 0.67 ha. The grazing method used was continuous stocking, with variable stocking rate. Three tester steers were used per paddock. Sward heights were measured once a week, and the stocking rate (SR) was adjusted using regulator steers to maintain the sward height at 30 cm. Pasture samples were collected once a month, and herbage accumulation rate (HAR), percentage of leaves (PL), leaf:stem ratio...

Beef cattle performance in response to Ipyporã and Marandu brachiariagrass cultivars under rotational stocking management R. Bras. Zootec.
Euclides,Valéria Pacheco Batista; Nantes,Nayana Nazareth; Montagner,Denise Baptaglin; Araújo,Alexandre Romeiro de; Barbosa,Rodrigo Amorim; Zimmer,Ademir Hugo; Valle,Cacilda Borges do.
ABSTRACT The objective of this two-year study was to evaluate live weight gain per animal and per area and their relationships with the characteristics of BRS Ipyporã (Brachiaria ruziziensis × Brachiaria brizantha) and Marandu (Brachiaria brizantha) pastures. A completely randomized block design was used with two treatments and four replicates. The grazing method was rotational stocking, with variable stocking rate. Stocking rate was adjusted twice a week during the grazing period (six or seven days) and post-grazing canopy height target of 15 cm. Animals were weighed every 28 days. Pastures were evaluated pre-grazing to estimate forage accumulation rate, forage mass (FM), leaf (LP) and stem (SP) percentages, and nutritive value. In the post-grazing, FM,...

Estimating the total leaf area of the green dwarf coconut tree (Cocos nucifera L.) Scientia Agricola
Sousa,Elias Fernandes de; Araújo,Marilaine Campanati; Posse,Robson Prucoli; Detmann,Edenio; Bernardo,Salassier; Berbert,Pedro Amorim; Santos,Paulo Albernaz dos.
Leaf area has significant effect on tree transpiration, and its measurement is important to many study areas. This work aimed at developing a non-destructive, practical, and empirical method to estimate the total leaf area of green dwarf coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L.) in plantations located at the northern region of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. A mathematical model was developed to estimate total leaf area values (TLA) as function of the average lengths of the last three leaf raquis (LR3), and of the number of leaves in the canopy (NL). The model has satisfactory degree of accuracy for agricultural engineering purposes.

Genetic divergence among accessions of Axonopus jesuiticus x A. scoparius based on morphological and agronomical traits Anais da ABC (AABC)
SCHEFFER-BASSO,SIMONE M.; FAVARETTO,ADRIANA; FELINI,VANDERLEIA; GOMES,CLAUDINEI C.; CARNEIRO,LUIS E.; CECCHIN,KALINCA.
This study had the objective of assessing the genetic divergence in giant missionary grass (Axonopus jesuiticus x A. scoparius) germplasm based on morphological and agronomic traits. Five accessions were evaluated in the field: V14337, V14403, V14404, V14405 and V14406. Three contrasting groups were formed using the UPGMA clustering method: V14337 and V14404 formed one group, V14403 and V14405 formed another, and V14406 was isolated from the other accessions. The most striking traits for the identification of the accessions were the height of the plant and the change color of the leaf. Only V14406 accession had purplish green leaves. The other four accessions differed with regards to plant height and dry matter production, with superiority of V14337 and...

Steer performance on deferred pastures of Brachiaria brizantha and Brachiaria decumbens Ciência Rural
Silva,Camile Sanches; Montagner,Denise Baptaglin; Euclides,Valéria Pacheco Batista; Queiroz,Carolina de Arruda; Andrade,Rafael Augusto Silva.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to compare structural, morphological and bromatological characteristics of forage as well as performance of Caracu beef cattle (200 ± 9 kg of initial body weight) supplemented with a multi-mineral mixture (0.25% of body weight) on deferred pastures of Brachiaria brizantha 'Marandu' and Brachiaria decumbens 'Basilisk' under continuous grazing. After the pasture was grazed to 10 cm of height, in March 2014, both grasses were left to rest and subjected to a 126-day deferment period. The experimental period lasted from July to October 2014; the sward characteristics and the animal's weight were evaluated every 28 days. The highest forage mass was recorded in 'Marandu' grass, whereas the highest leaves percentage and...

Morphogenesis of the giant missionary grass in response to pig slurry fertilization Ciência Rural
Zabot,Valdirene; Scheffer-Basso,Simone Meredith; Miranda,Mario; Kotwittz,Daiane Karla; Brustolin,Karen Doering.
The morphogenesis of giant missionary grass (Axonopus jesuticus x A. scoparius) was evaluated in this study in response to the application of 0, 40, 80, 120, 160, and 200m³ ha-1year-1 of pig slurry, calculated to provide 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500kg N ha-1year-1, respectively. The experiment was carried out in the field, at Chapecó, Santa Catarina, Brazil, in 2010-2011. The doses were fractioned in four applications, performed after the pasture cuttings, during the growth season of the grass. Morphogenetic evaluations were performed weekly between 10/26/2010 and 12/07/2010 (spring), 12/14/2010 and 01/11/2011 (late spring/early summer), 01/18/2011 and 02/07/2011 (summer), and 02/15/2011 and 03/21/2011 (late summer). The leaf senescence, leaf elongation,...
