Recent data on the distribution of birds in the Cape Verde Islands are presented, including records of six species new to the archipelago, viz. Pintail Anas acuta, Least Sandpiper Calidris minutilla, Snipe Gallinago gallinago, Red-rumped Swallow Hirundo daurica, African Sand Martin Riparia paludicola, and Song Thrush Turdus philomelos. Also included are data on extentions in range and time within the islands of migrant visitors as well as observations of rare and threatened resident species. Extralimital records of migrant Cape Verde seabirds are summarized and news and views relating to the conservation of threatened endemic taxa are discussed. In addition, some recent studies bearing on the systematics of endemic Procellarids are reviewed. |

A new species of Platypodiella Guinot, 1967, from the island of St. Helena, P. georgei spec, nov., is described. This species was found associated with encrusting species of Palythoa Lamouroux, 1816 (Zoantharia). Ample evidence is presented that both the eastern Atlantic P. picta (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) and the western Atlantic P. spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) also live habitually associated with encrusting species of Palythoa, rarely with other zoantharians. For each of the two East-Pacific members of the genus, P. rotundata (Stimpson, 1860) and P. gemmata (Rathbun, 1902), there is at least one rather detailed published record suggesting that these species too associate with Palythoa. Thus, this habit would seem to go for all five members of the genus. Data... |

Three species of Amphipoda are recorded from interstices of a marine beach on the island of Santiago, Cape Verde Archipelago: Cabogidiella littoralis n. gen., n. sp. (Bogidiellidae), Psammogammarus spinosus n. sp. (Melitidae), and Idunella sketi Karaman, 1980 (Liljeborgiidae). The latter, widely distributed species (West Indies, Canary Islands), is new to the Cape Verde Islands. Furthermore, an isopod is described from the same locality, Caecostenetroides mixtum n. sp. (Gnathostenetroididae). |

The decapods Eualus lebourae, Processa modica carolii, Palaemon xiphias, Philocheras bispinosus, and Inachus phalangium are recorded from the coasts of Madeira for the first time. The decapods Hippolyte garciarasoi, Hippolyte varians, Eualus lebourae, Processa parva, Processa modica carolii, Processa robusta, Palaemonella atlantica, Periclimenes wirtzi, Philocheras bispinosus, and Philocheras fasciatus, are recorded from the coasts of the Canary Islands for the first time. Eualus occultus, Processa parva and Processa modica carolii are recorded from the Cape Verde Islands for the first time. Processa parva is also recorded for the Azores for the first time. For Eualus occultus, Hippolyte garciarasoi, Processa modica carolii, Periclimenes wirtzi and... |

The first Western Palearctic record of a Red-footed Booby Sula sula (L., 1766), a brown whitetailed morph observed on Cima (Cape Verde Islands), is described. The status of this species in the tropical South Atlantic Ocean is evaluated. At present, Fernando de Noronha is the only South Atlantic stronghold of the species (ca. 4000 individuals; cf. Oren, 1984). The species has disappeared, or almost so, from other islands (St. Helena: absent; Ascension:0-30 individuals; Ilha da Trindade: less than 100 pairs). A link may exist between the apparent recent increase of the population of Fernando de Noronha and the apparent recent decline of the Trindade population. It seems possible that the Trindade population for some unknown reason has migrated to Fernando de... |

The marine invertebrate fauna of the Cape Verde Islands contains many endemic species due to their isolated location in the eastern Atlantic, yet research has not been conducted on most taxa here. One such group are the zoanthids or mat anemones, an order of benthic cnidarians (Hexacorallia: Zoantharia) common in many marine environments. In this study, the diversity of zoanthids in the Cape Verde Islands is specifically examined for the first time. Field images and sampling are combined with molecular phylogenetic analyses utilizing two mitochondrial DNA markers (cytochrome oxidase subunit I and 16S ribosomal DNA) to determine the number of species present. Specimens from eight species (Palythoa caribaeorum, Palythoa sp. 265, Zoanthus aff. pulchellus,... |

Observations of whales and dolphins in the Cape Verde Islands obtained in 1995 and 1996 are reported and data on the occurrence of 14 taxa are given, including four not previously reported from the region, viz. Bryde’s Whale Balaenoptera edeni, Killer Whale Orcinus orca, Rough-toothed Dolphin Steno bredanensis, and Striped Dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba. An earlier report of Fin Whale B. physalus is reviewed and re-identified as B. cf. borealis. Status and occurrence of the Humpback Whale Megaptera novaeangliae are discussed at some length. Unpublished observations from other observers are also included and a short account on the history of whaling in the islands is given. A list of all cetacean taxa reliably recorded in the Cape Verde region is presented... |
