Escherichia Coli: Characteristics of Carbapenem Resistance and Virulence Factors BABT
Candan,Esra Deniz; Aksöz,Nilüfer.
ABSTRACT In this study, fifty Escherichia coli strains were analyzed by multiplex polymerase chain reaction for the genes expressed carbapenemase and virulence factors in order to determine the presence of carbapenemase and nine virulence factors and investigate the association between these two characteristics. When carbapenemase susceptibility was taken into consideration, OXA-48 type carbapenemase was determined for 22% of the total strains. Also, the frequency of virulence gene regions in E.coli infections and virulence gene profiles of these isolates were examined and the frequency of pap, afa, sfa, fimA, iroN, aer, iutA, hly and cnf-1 genes were 24, 38, 20, 84, 28, 90, 92, 10 and 34% respectively. A significant correlation was found between the...

KPC-producing Enterobacter aerogenes infection BJID
Tuon,Felipe F.; Scharf,Camila; Rocha,Jaime L.; Cieslinsk,Juliette; Becker,Guilherme Nardi; Arend,Lavinia N..
Background: Enterobacteris a common nosocomial microorganism and its carbapenem's resistance has increased. The management of these cases is unclear. Objective: We evaluated 16 patients with KPC-producing Enterobacter aerogenesinfections, detailing the site of infection, therapy, clinical and epidemiological data. Methods: A retrospective and descriptive study. Clinical data were revised and KPC-2 detection was by molecular methods. Risk factors associated with mortality were compared using appropriate tests according to variable type with a significance level of 0.05.Results: The 30-day mortality rate was 37.5% with no association with inadequate treatment. Age (p= 0.004) and Charlson score of comorbidities (p= 0.048) were independent risk factors...

Clinical and microbiological characterization of KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae infections in Brazil BJID
Beirão,Elisa Maria; Furtado,Juvencio Jose Duailibe; Girardello,Raquel; Ferreira Filho,Heli; Gales,Ana Cristina.
In 2008 isolates of KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-KPN) were detected for the first time at Hospital Heliópolis, São Paulo, Brazil. The aim of this study was to characterize the clinical and microbiological outcomes of infections caused by KPC-KPN. A historical cohort of patients from whom KPC-KPN strains were isolated was performed. Isolates were identified as resistant to ertapenem by automated broth microdilution system and screened as carbapenemase producers by the modified Hodge test. The beta-lactamase resistance gene blaKPC was detected by PCR. The genetic relatedness of isolates was determined by PFGE. The study provides early clinical experience in treating KPC-KPN infections in a Brazilian tertiary center.

Isolation of blaNDM-producing Enterobacteriaceae in a public hospital in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil BJID
Barberino,Maria Goreth; Cruvinel,Silvia de Araujo; Faria,Célio; Salvino,Marco Aurélio; Silva,Marcio de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT Carbapenemases have great importance in the global epidemiological scenario since infections with carbapenemase-producing bacteria are associated with high mortality, especially in hospitalized patients in intensive care units. This study describes two microorganisms producers of the New Delhi Metallo-b-lactamase, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Citrobacter freundii, from two patients admitted to a public hospital in Salvador, Bahia. These are the first clinical cases of New Delhi Metallo-b-lactamase described in microorganisms in the north and northeast Brazil. The isolates were characterized by antimicrobial susceptibility test, with resistance to all β-lactams including carbapenems, negative Modified Hodge Test and the synergy test with...
