Profiling carbohydrate composition, biohydrogen capacity, and disease resistance in potato Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Diez-de-Medina Roldán,Sergio; Silva,Herman; Jeblick,Wolfgang; Nowik,Isabella; Modigell,Michael; Neuhaus,H. Ekkehard; Conrath,Uwe.
Background: Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is one of the most important sources of carbohydrates in human diet. Because of its high carbohydrate levels it recently has also received attention in biohydrogen production. To exploit the natural variation of potato with respect to resistance to major diseases, carbohydrate levels and composition, and capacity for biohydrogen production we analyzed tubers of native, improved, and genetically modified potatoes, and two other tuberous species for their glucose, fructose, sucrose, and starch content. Results: High-starch potato varieties were evaluated for their potential for Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus-mediated biohydrogen production with Desirée and Rosita varieties delivering the highest biohydrogen...

Hydrocooling on postharvest conservation of butter lettuce Horticultura Brasileira
França,Christiane FM; Ribeiro,Welington S; Silva,Fernanda C; Costa,Lucas C; Rêgo,Elizanilda R; Finger,Fernando L.
Lettuce is a vegetable highly susceptible to water loss, which reduces its shelf life and increases the final cost to the consumer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of hydrocooling on the postharvest shelf life of butter lettuce 'Vitória de Santo Antão'. The lettuce heads, after selection, were subjected to the following treatments: T1= hydrocooling followed by storage at 5°C in the cold chamber; T2= storage in the cold chamber at 5°C without hydrocooling; T3= hydrocooling followed by storage at 22°C and T4= storage at 22°C without hydrocooling. We determined the shelf life, leaves mass loss, chlorophyll content, relative water content, total soluble sugars content, reducing sugars, non-reducing sugars and starch. The data were analyzed in...

Белки, аминокислоты и углеводы в прибрежных наносах Севастопольской бухты Черного моря IBSS Repository
Миронов, О. Г.; Гапонюк, Т. О.; Муравьева, И. П.; Замыслова, Т. Н..

A brief review of nutritional studies for Penaeus monodon ArchiMer
Liao, I; Liu, F.
In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

Proximate biochemical analysis (proteins, lipids and carbohydrates) are performed on a regular basis by the various laboratories fom the Aquaculture Resources Directorate. Methods initially developed to analyse hydrological parameters were firstly transfered to assess meat components.1t appears now important to review and update the commonly used methods (Lowry et al., (1951), Dubois et al.,(l956), Marsh et Weinstein, (1966)), for our specifie purposes. A round table was organized to facilitate discussion among researchers and technicians from both Directorates 'Aquaculture Resources' and 'Product Valorization'and external partners, University of Caen. Several communications reviewing former and recent studies were done. Colleagues from the Directorate...

Larval rearings were performed with seawater either freshly pumped or after storage in a pond. Concerning bacterial populations these waters were characterized by a high diversity, little sized bacteria whose few of them (1%) were cultivable on Zobell medium. In the tanks, the bacterial ecosystem was modified by the presence of antibiotics, larvae and algae: the diversity was lowered, the cellular volume was increased by a factor 2 to 5, 100% bacteria were cultivable and chloramphenicol resistant, and their metabolism changed. Taxonomic screening showed no differences among the two waters neither at the beginning nor at the end of the rearings. However, depending on the water (stored or not) differences were identified for bacterial physiology and...

The nutritional requirements of the Japanese shrimp Penaeus japonicus ArchiMer
Guillaume, Julien.
Penaeus japonicus is probably the best known species among penaeids or even among shrimps. In juveniles, the protein requirement was best studied and Japanese shrimp appears as the most demanding penaeid species. They may be related to several factors such as energy level of the diet, digestibility or biological value of protein or other nutritional factors. The essential amino acids are well known, however from a quantitative point of view the requirements in each of these amino acids remain to be determined.

Temporal variability in the biochemical composition of sedimentary organic matter in an intertidal flat of the Galician coast (NW Spain) ArchiMer
Cividanes, S; Incera, M; Lopez, J.
Temporal variations and spatial distribution of sedimentary organic matter composition were investigated over a one year period in an intertidal flat of the NW Spain. Sediment samples were collected from 0 to 25 cm depth, every three months, from January 1997 to January 1998 at three tidal levels (high, medium and low). Changes in the elemental and biochemical composition were assessed to gather information on temporal and spatial fluctuations in quantity and quality of sedimentary organic matter potentially available to benthic deposit-feeder nutrition. Organic matter content was significantly higher at the medium tidal level, while minimum values were found at the high tidal level. The different biochemical classes of organic compounds exhibited...

Energy-protein management by some warmwater finfishes. ArchiMer
Luguet, P; Moreau, Y.
If warmwater finfish protein requirements as level in diet is low, absolute intake per day is similar to those of coldwater species. But relation of this requirement with specific growth rate differs for strictly warmwater fishes as Tilapias. Analysis of partition between protein and non-protein energy retention shows that these species with Clarias make a better use of non-protein energy provided and consequently improve their protein retention. Better carbohydrate digestibility and metabolism are propounded as part of the explanation.

Variation in the composition of carbohydrates in the Dona Paula Bay (west of India) during May/June 1998 ArchiMer
D'Souza, F; Bhosle, Nb.
Suspended particulate material was analysed for particulate carbohydrate concentration and composition and for the bulk parameters: suspended particulate matter, chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen and particulate proteins. Chlorophyll a concentrations increased from May 7 to 15 due to the development of a small scale bloom of diatom Navicula sp. and decreased for the remaining period after the premonsoon rain on 16 and 17 May. Concentrations of particulate organic carbon, organic nitrogen, carbohydrates and proteins increased with the increase in chlorophyll a concentration. Together particulate protein-carbon and carbohydrate-carbon accounted for 10 to 30% of the organic carbon. Glucose contributed 26 to 81% to the...

Protein requirements of Penaeid shrimp. ArchiMer
Kanazawa, A.
Proteins are indispensable nutrients for growth and maintenance of live of all animals. The optimum protein levels in diets for shrimps are different among the various species. Squid meal is an effective protein source for many penaeids. The effects of dietary protein, lipid, and carbohydrate levels on the growth and survival of larvae of Penaeus japonicus were examined by feeding trials using purified diet with carrageenan as a binder. As a result, the effects of protein levels on growth and survival of P. japonicus larvae varied with dietary carbohydrate levels but not dietary lipid levels.

Small-scale variability of zooplankton pyruvate kinase activity in the Gironde Estuary plume (Atlantic French Coast): A case study under unusually low freshwater discharge ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre.
Pyruvate kinase (PK) activity measurements are used to assess the role of carbohydrates in global feeding of mesozooplankton communities inhabiting an estuary plume. As a consequence of a remarkably low freshwater discharge rate, the sea surface layers of the area under estuarine influence showed a very moderate salinity fall and a nearly total depletion in nitrates, whereas higher levels of these nutrients were found in deeper, more saline, layers. Small-scale PK activity variations in mesozooplankton appear to be closely correlated to nitrate integration values within the water column. The results were analysed in comparison with literature reports. The study produced a coherent overall interpretation, which strongly supports the reliability of this new...

Compere, Chantal; Bellon Fontaine, M.-n.; Bertrand, P; Costa, D; Marcus, P; Poleunis, C; Pradier, C.m.; Rondot, B; Walls, M.g..
Adhesion of micro-organisms to surfaces in marine environments leads to biofouling. The deleterious effects of biofilm growth in the marine environment are numerous and include : energy losses due to increased fluid frictional resistance or to increased heat transfer resistance, risk of corrosion induced by micro-organisms, loss of optical properties, quality control and safety problems. Antifouling agents are generally used to protect surfaces from being affected by such a biofilm. These agents are toxic and can be persistent, causing harmful environmental and ecological effects. Moreover, the use of biocides and regular cleaning considerably increase the maintenance costs of marine industries. An improved knowledge of the biofilm adhesion mechanisms is...

Reference diet for crustaceans: Principle of experimentation. ArchiMer
Castell, J.
Feeding trials were conducted with over 22 different crustacean species to compare the potential use of two diets as Standard Reference Diets (SRD) in crustacean research. The two diets (BML 81 S, a casein/albumin based formula developed at the University of California, Bodega Marine Laboratory, and HFX CRD 84, a crab protein concentrate based diet formulated at the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans Halifax Laboratory) were about equal in performance for most species tested. Though neither diet was an ideal SRD, the HFX CRD 84 formulation based upon a purified protein of marine origin was accepted as the interim SRD for use in aquatic crustacean studies.

Identification of transcription factors involved in the phenotype of a domesticated oleaginous microalgae strain of Tisochrysis lutea ArchiMer
Thiriet-rupert, Stanislas; Carrier, Gregory; Trottier, Camille; Eveillard, D.; Schoefs, B.; Bougaran, Gael; Cadoret, Jean-paul; Chenais, B.; Saint-jean, Bruno.
Microalgae are an outstanding source of high value products with applications in food, feed or biofuel production. Among these promising organisms, the haptophyte Tisochrysis lutea is commonly used as a feed for shellfish and shrimps in aquaculture. Its capacity to produce high amounts of docosahexanoic acid and storage lipids is also of economic interest for nutrition and energy production. Consequently, understanding its lipid accumulation under nitrogen deprivation is of major interest. Here, we aimed to identify Transcription Factors (TFs) involved in the establishment of the mutant phenotype of the 2Xc1 strain of T. lutea, which accumulates double the quantity of storage lipids under nitrogen deprivation than the wild type strain (WTc1). Strains were...
