Use of cactus pear (Opuntia ficus indica Mill) replacing corn on carcass characteristics and non-carcass components in Santa Inês lambs R. Bras. Zootec.
Pinto,Tiago Ferreira; Costa,Roberto Germano; Medeiros,Ariosvaldo Nunes de; Medeiros,Geovergue Rodrigues de; Azevedo,Paulo Sergio de; Oliveira,Ronaldo Lopes; Treviño,Israel Hernandez.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the biometric and morphometric measures, regional composition, carcass characteristics and non-carcass components of Santa Inês lambs submitted to levels of corn replaced by cactus pear in the diet. It was used 45 Santa Ines non-castrated male lambs, with average initial live weight of 25.50 ± 0.48 kg as a completely randomized block design with five treatments (0; 25; 50; 70 and 100%) and nine replicates. There was an effect of the diet on slaughter weight, empty body weight, hot and cold carcass, cold carcass weight, shoulder weight and loin weight. Cactus pear can replace up to 75% of corn in diets for feedlot Santa Inês lambs, without compromising production, carcass characteristics and production of...

Can the strategies for endoparasite control affect the productivity of lamb production systems on pastures? R. Bras. Zootec.
Fernandes,Maria Angela Machado; Salgado,Jordana Andrioli; Peres,Mylena Taborda Piquera; Campos,Karla Francisca Duarte; Molento,Marcelo Beltrão; Monteiro,Alda Lúcia Gomes.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the productivity and carcass traits of unweaned Suffolk lambs finished on pasture and subjected to three strategies for endoparasite control: prophylactic treatment of all animals every 28 days; treatment of animals with a cut off number of nematode fecal egg count (FEC) ≥ 700; and treatment of animals using the FAMACHA scores ≥ 3. Average daily weight gain (ADG) and FEC were evaluated every 14 days for 112 days. Body condition scores and carcass characteristics were assessed before and after slaughter, respectively. Animal productivity was calculated based on animal stocking rate, ADG, and weight variation per area. Animal productivity, pasture, and carcass characteristics did not differ among...

Characteristics of carcass and non-carcass components in feedlot native goats in the Brazilian semiarid region R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Andrea Souza da; Furtado,Dermeval Araújo; Medeiros,Ariosvaldo Nunes de; Costa,Roberto Germano; Cezar,Marcílio Fontes; Pereira Filho,José Morais.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of carcass and non-carcass components in Brazilian semi-arid native goats of different genotypes in feedlot system. It was used 30 non-castrated Azul, Graúna and Moxotó goats with average initial weight of 15.93 ± 2.4, distributed in a completely randomized design with 3 genotypes and 10 replicates. The experimental diet used had a roughage:concentrate ratio of 47:53. There was a significant effect for weight gain and subcutaneous fat thickness according to genotype. Retail cut yields did not differ among the studied breeds. The percentage of non-carcass components in relation to live weight and empty body weight were not different among genotypes. Graúna and Azul genotypes showed daily gain...
