Determination of survival motor neuron (SMN) genes copy numbers in a sample of healthy population from southern Spain JBAG
Carrasco Salas,P; Palma Milla,C; López Siles,J.
Copy number analysis of the SMN (Survival Motor Neuron) genes in healthy individuals with no history of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is important to assess carrier frequency, the frequency of patients with two copies of SMN1 on one chromosome (a factor that could lead to a false-negative result when testing for SMA carriers) and the mechanisms responsible for these chromosomes with two copies of SMN1. We retrospectively analyzed the copy number of SMN1 and SMN2 genes detected in blood samples of 119 gamete donors by Multiplex Ligation- Dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA) assay during the last two years. The number of donors with a heterozygous deletion of exon 7 of SMN1 was 1 in 59 samples (1.7 %). It was estimated that 5.4 % of the studied alleles...

Carriage prevalence of Neisseria meningitidis in the Americas in the 21st century: a systematic review BJID
Santos-Neto,José Francisco; Ferreira,Viviane Matos; Feitosa,Caroline Alves; Martinez-Silveira,Martha Silvia; Campos,Leila Carvalho.
Abstract Neisseria meningitidis is a bacterium that colonizes the human nasopharynx and is transmitted by respiratory droplets from asymptomatic or symptomatic carriers. Occasionally, the pathogen invades the mucosa and enters the bloodstream, causing invasive meningococcal disease, a life-threatening infection. While meningococcal colonization is the first step in the development of invasive disease, the risk factors that predict progression from asymptomatic to symptomatic status are not well-known. The present report aimed to describe the prevalence of N. meningitidis carriers throughout the Americas, emphasizing the risk factors associated with carrier status, as well as the most prevalent serogroups in each studied population. We conducted a...

Symbiotic potential and survival of native rhizobia kept on different carriers BJM
Ruíz-Valdiviezo,Víctor Manuel; Canseco,Lucía María Cristina Ventura; Suárez,Luis Antonio Castillo; Gutiérrez-Miceli,Federico Antonio; Dendooven,Luc; Rincón-Rosales,Reiner.
Native rhizobia are ideal for use as commercial legume inoculants. The characteristics of the carrier used to store the inoculants are important for the survival and symbiotic potential of the rhizobia. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of peat (PEAT), perlite sugarcane bagasse (PSB), carboxymethyl cellulose plus starch (CMCS), and yeast extract mannitol supplemented with mannitol (YEMM) on the survival, nodulation potential and N2 fixation capacity of the native strains Sinorhizobium mexicanum ITTG R7T and Rhizobium calliandrae LBP2-1T and of the reference strain Rhizobium etli CFN42T. A factorial design (4 × 3) with four repetitions was used to determine the symbiotic potential of the rhizobial strains. The survival of the...
