We compiled and analysed logbook data from the French trawl albacore fishery covering the period 1991–2015. The dataset comprised catch and effort data for the French fleet operating in the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea, as well as spatiotemporal and gear characteristics. Generalized linear modelling was used to model spatial, seasonal, environmental, and gear covariates of fleet CPUE rates. A long-term index of relative abundance is provided that can be integrated into the stock assessment of North Atlantic albacore. The analysis revealed higher albacore CPUE associated with relatively low sea surface temperature and distinct seasonal effects. The derived abundance trend for the French trawl fishery agreed with the estimated time series of stock abundance... |

Introduction : It is now clear that the world's fishery resources are being subjected to exploitation at or above their capacity to produce maximum sustainable yields. At the same time as these trends are being felt, there is a very large wastage of fishery resources from discarding unwanted catches at sea. At the end of each fishing operation a part of the catch is often returned to the sea after sorting by the fishermen. A 1994 FAO report provided an estimate of global discards in commercial fisheries of 27 millions of tons per year compared to 50 million tons of direct human consumption. A more recent FAO document estimated that discards were in the order of 20 million tons in 1997. The majority of the world's fisheries are multi-species in nature and... |

In 2003, IFREMER implemented an observer program on board of the French purse seiner targeting bluefin tuna (BFT) in the Mediterranean Sea to collect the size composition of catches. The protocol and the sampling design were established by IFREMER and the operations were carried out by two independent scientific observers (each one following a given boat over two distinguished fishing seasons). The 788 BFT measured by the two observers during the ~ 190 fishing days were mostly small/juveniles fish and solely represented 2.7% of the total catches. The sampling appears largely insufficient to be representative of this fleet and was furthermore strongly biased (big BFT being under-sampled). From our viewpoint, the implementation of a joint observer program on... |

The works carried out during this course (March-August 2015) alowed to correct the datasets and to study the variation in catches of albacore tuna from 1967 to 2014 (except for the years 1987 to 1990) based on 3 gears: the trolling line, the line with cane and the pelagic trawl. Simultaneously, key ICCAT delivred was provide information to expert groups, with a view to defining fishing quotas. Catches released and fishing effort (defined by the number of vessels and the time spent at sea) have varied considerably over these 50 years, and have been increasing in recent years, after having decreased sharply. Fishing today is concentrated on the edge of the continental shelf, whereas it was very oceanic before. It is mainly juveniles that are caught, while... |

Trophic level (TL)-based indicators have been widely used to examine fishing impacts in aquatic ecosystems and the induced biodiversity changes. However, much debate has ensued regarding discrepancies and challenges arising from the use of landings data from commercial fisheries to calculate TL indicators. Subsequent studies have started to examine survey-based and model-based indicators. In this paper, we undertake an extensive evaluation of a variety of TL indicators across 9 well-studied marine ecosystems by making use of model- as well as surveyand catch-based TL indicators. Using detailed regional information and data on fishing history, fishing intensity, and environmental conditions, we evaluate how well TL indicators are capturing fishing effects... |

This report reviews the catch assessment survey, conducted by staff of the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA), of the spiny lobster fishery on the Mahe Plateau during the 1993 fishing season. Following the recommendations made after the 1992 fishing season, the fishery was reopened in 1993 for two months, November and December. The monitoring programme set up in 1992 was continued to gather more information on the spiny lobster so as to improve the management of this resource around the Mahe Plateau. A total of 28 licenses were issued (compared to 38 in 1992); 16 on Mahe, 6 on Praslin and 6 on La Digue. Licensed fishing unit comprised an average of three men. Snorkelling was used by 24 fishing units as the only catching method, while 2 fishing units... |

ABSTRACT In this article, the study and prediction of the state of fish resources in the Yesil River was carried out to determine the boundary reference points of the reserve and management decisions in case they are exceeded, to ensure sustainable fisheries and preserve biological diversity. Ichthyological studies, retrospective analyses and rankings of the effects of the water supply of the Yesil River on fish stocks have been carried out, critical values of the biomass of fishing reserves have been determined, as criteria for biologically safe fishing values and targets for management of fish stocks at reaching the boundary values of 24.03 tonnes have been established. According to the results of studies of basic biological indicators, it was determined... |
