Albas,Avelino; Picolo,Miléia Ricci; Soares,Célio Nereu; Bachega,Hugo Vagner Ulbano; Tarumoto,Mário Hissamitsu.
Background Brazil holds annual nationwide public campaigns to vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies. The presence of rabies antibodies in these animals, which are among the main transmitters of rabies to humans, is a good indicator that they are immunized and protected. Methods In the present study we analyzed 834 serum samples from dogs and cats from the Southeast of Brazil (Presidente Prudente and Dracena cities), 12 months after the 2009 vaccination campaign. We used the technique known as rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test (RFFIT) and considered reactant those sera with values higher 0.5 IU/mL. Results and discussion Reactant sample results in Presidente Prudente were 153 (51.0%) for dogs and 59 (32.6%) for cats, and in Dracena 110 (52.1%) for...

Migliari, Roney; De Vuono, Rafael Struffaldi.
Ovarysalpingohisterectomy is the elective surgery most often performed in veterinary practices and hospitals for companion animals. The technique here described reduces the time of surgery, the number of surgical instruments needed and time for recovery of patients, resulting in a significant reduction in the cost. It also enables the surgeon to perform up five surgeries or more per hour. Having used this technique in the last two years, the author performed the procedure in over 3,000animais, results being better than those obtained with the traditional techniques.

Anatomicosurgical arterial segmentation of the cat lungs (Felis catus domesticus, L., 1758) Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
OLIVEIRA,Fabrício Singaretti; BORGES,Edson Moreira; MACHADO,Márcia Rita Fernandes; CANOLA,Júlio Carlos; RIBEIRO,Antonio Augusto Coppi Maciel.
The aim of this research was to establish the anatomicosurgical segments through lobation and arterial intralobar branching in cats lungs. After dissection of twenty lungs, it was noted that the right pulmonary artery, usually, emits a branch to the cranial lobe and a branch to the middle lobe, arising together from a trunk. A large branch irrigates the caudal lobe in most of the cases. Two branches arising in common origin from the caudal lobe branch irrigate the accessory lobe. The left pulmonary artery originates a trunk that, in most of the cases, emits a branch to the cranial and a branch to the caudal part of the left cranial lobe. It can be concluded that the right lung is formed by four and the left by two lobes, and variations occur in the...

Evaluation of preprandial and postprandial serum bile acids and plasma ammonia concentrations in healthy domestic cats and the effects of frozen storage on plasma ammonia concentrations Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
KOGIKA,Márcia Mery; IMAGAWA,Viviane Higuchi; LUCAS,Silvia Regina Ricci; MIRANDOLA,Regina Mieko Sakata; HAGIWARA,Mitika Kuribayashi.
The evaluation of hepatic diseases in cats requires many laboratorial tests, and those routinely used are less conclusive. Considering the little availability of data and controversies related to the subject, we decided to study the preprandial and postprandial serum bile acids and plasma ammonia levels, and the effects of storage on these values. Preprandial (fasting) and postprandial serum bile acid (SBA) levels of 20 adult, healthy cats were determined using the enzymatic method. The measured values were 0.5 ± 0.1 and 3.6 ± 1.0 µmol/L, respectively. The preprandial and postprandial plasma ammonia (PA) levels, obtained 30 minutes after blood collection, 157.0 ± 18.7 µg/dL or 89.5 ± 10.7 µmol/L and 295.3 ± 28.2 µg/dL or 165.2 ± 17.3 µmol/L, were...

Granulosa cell tumour with metastasis in a cat Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
GIACÓIA,Márcia Regina; MAIORKA,Paulo César; OLIVEIRA,Clair Motos; SINHORINI,Idércio Luiz; DAGLI,Maria Lúcia Zaidan.
The clinical, gross and microscopical features of a granulosa cell tumour in the ovary of a 2-year-old cat are described. This is a rare tumour in cats, moreover because of the animal’s age. It was diagnosed clinically by ultrasound examination. The tumour, a cystic mass in the region of the left ovary, metastasized to the epiplon and lungs. Tumour cells expressed vimentin and were arranged in a diffuse sarcomatous pattern, supported by a fine fibrovascular stroma. The presence of hair loss and repeated oestrus as clinical signs are indicative of orthoendocrine paraneoplastic syndrome, due to excessive oestrogen stimulation. This tumour should be considered in the differential diagnosis of behavioural disturbances in female cats.

Braga,M.S.C.O.; André,M.R.; Freschi,C.R.; Teixeira,M.C.A.; Machado,R.Z..
Hemoplasmas are bacteria that infect erythrocytes, attaching to the red blood cell. There is a need for more reports of hemoplasma infection prevalence and molecular characterization among cats in Brazil since there are only few published reports. The present work aimed to detect and molecularly characterize the presence of hemotrophic mycoplasmas in domestic cats with outdoor access from São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. Twenty cats (10%) were positive for Candidatus M. haemominutum, five (2.5%) for M. haemofelis, and four (2.%) for M. turicensis based on 16S rRNA gene PCRs. Five cats (2.5%) were co-positive for Candidatus M. haemominutum and M. haemofelis. PCR diagnosis was confirmed by sequencing; and phylogenetic analysis was based on 16S rRNA and rnpb genes.

Isolation of Sporothrix schenkii from the nails of healthy cats BJM
Souza,Lorena Leonardo de; Nascente,Patrícia da Silva; Nobre,Márcia Oliveira; Meinerz,Ana Raquel Mano; Meireles,Mário Carlos Araújo.
Many cases of sporotrichosis in cats were diagnosed in the town of Rio Grande, RS, Brazil, caused mainly by inoculation due to scratches. In this work, we evaluated the frequency of Sporothrix schenckii in the nails of healthy cats living together with cats showing clinical sporotrichosis. The isolation of the fungus was carried out pressing unwashed nails of the forelimbs of 24 cats (48 paws) directly onto the surface of Mycobiotic Agar in Petri dishes. S. schenckii was isolated from seven (29.1%) cats. The procedure for isolation of the fungus was simpler than methods that require sedation and cuts of the nails.

Rickettsia felis infection in cat fleas Ctenocephalides felis felis BJM
Horta,Mauricio C.; Scott,Fabio B.; Correia,Thaís R.; Fernandes,Julio I.; Richtzenhain,Leonardo J.; Labruna,Marcelo B..
The present study evaluated the rickettsial infection in a laboratory colony of cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouche) in Brazil. All flea samples (30 eggs, 30 larvae, 30 cocoons, 30 males, and 30 females) tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were shown to contain rickettsial DNA. PCR products, corresponding to the rickettsial gltA, htrA, ompA and ompB gene partial sequences were sequenced and showed to correspond to Rickettsia felis, indicating that the flea colony was 100% infected by R. felis. The immunofluorescence assay (IFA) showed the presence of R. felis-reactive antibodies in blood sera of 7 (87.5%) out of 8 cats that were regularly used to feed the flea colony. From 15 humans that used to work with the flea colony in the laboratory,...
