Stigmella divina sp. n., a remarkable species from Turkmenistan and Turkey (Lepidoptera, Nepticulidae) Naturalis

Stigmella divina sp. n. is described from the Koper Dag mountains in Turkmenistan and Central Anatolia (Turkey). The species cannot be placed in any known species group, because of its reinarkable genitalia. The male possesses a unique androconial patch on the forwing underside.

Notes on Central Asian dragonflies (Insecta: Odonata) Naturalis

New and old material from Central Asia is published. In total 38 species are recorded from various locations in this region. For the more interesting species notes and figures are provided. One probably new Ischnura species is briefly described, but not formally named. For a, possibly new, subspecies of Sympetrum sinaiticum Dumont, 1977, a short diagnosis with figures is provided.

Sources of Agricultural Productivity Growth in Central Asia: The Case of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan AgEcon

The paper examines agricultural production and productivity growth in two Central Asian countries – Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Both countries are characterized by a significant shift of resources from the traditional Soviet model of collective agriculture to more market-compliant individual and family farming. In both countries, the beginning of the policy-driven switch to family farming around 1997 coincided with the beginning of recovery in agriculture, namely resumption of agricultural growth after a phase of transition decline since 1991. In addition to growth in total agricultural production, we also observe significant increases in productivity of both land and labor since 1997. This paper examines the impacts of different irrigation scenarios on Uzbekistan's cotton sector and world cotton trade. The immediate challenges for this region's water resource management represent a test case for the long-run challenges associated with global climate change. With an eye towards this eventuality, this paper describes a variety of water policy scenarios relevant to Central Asia's agriculture and simulates their impacts on cotton markets in this region and around the world.

Could Payments for environmental services improve rangeland management in Central Asia, West Asia and North Africa? AgEcon

Although several institutional and management approaches that address the degradation of the rangelands have been tested in the dry areas of Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA), impact has been limited. Nonetheless, the development of National Action Plans to combat desertification highlights the interest of governments to tackle this issue. Payment for Environmental Services (PES) may be a viable policy option, though, to date, most PES programs have focused on the management of different resources (forests, watersheds).
