Biodiversity Conservation in Southeast Asian Timber Concessions: a Critical Evaluation of Policy Mechanisms and Guidelines Ecology and Society
Dennis, Rona A; Center for International Forestry Research; rdennis@hn.ozemail.com.au; Meijaard, Erik; The Nature Conservancy; Australian National University; emeijaard@TNC.ORG; Gustafsson, Lena; Swedish University of Agricultural Science; Lena.Gustafsson@nvb.slu.se.
Tropical deforestation is leading to a loss of economically productive timber concessions, as well as areas with important environmental or socio-cultural values. To counteract this threat in Southeast Asia, sustainable forest management (SFM) practices are becoming increasingly important. We assess the tools and guidelines that have been developed to promote SFM and the progress that has been made in Southeast Asia toward better logging practices. We specifically focus on practices relevant to biodiversity issues. Various regional or national mechanisms now inform governments and the timber industry about methods to reduce the impact of production forestry on wildlife and the forest environment. However, so many guidelines have been produced that it has...

Sustainable Forest Management in Cameroon Needs More than Approved Forest Management Plans Ecology and Society
Cerutti, Paolo Omar; Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Bogor, Indonesia; p.cerutti@cgiar.org; Nasi, Robert; Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Bogor, Indonesia; r.nasi@cgiar.org; Tacconi, Luca; Crawford School of Economics and Government, The Australian National University; luca.tacconi@anu.edu.au.
One of the main objectives of the 1994 Cameroonian forestry law is to improve the management of production forests by including minimum safeguards for sustainability into compulsory forest management plans. As of 2007, about 3.5 million hectares (60%) of the productive forests are harvested following the prescriptions of 49 approved management plans. The development and implementation of these forest management plans has been interpreted by several international organizations as long awaited evidence that sustainable management is applied to production forests in Cameroon. Recent reviews of some plans have concluded, however, that their quality was inadequate. This paper aims at taking these few analyses further by assessing the actual impacts that...

Manure effect on the incidence of rose diseases in the Integrated Production System Horticultura Brasileira
Ribeiro,Márcia NO; Almeida,Elka FA; Reis,Simone N; Carvalho,Livia M; Figueiredo,Júnia RM; Ribeiro Júnior,Pedro M.
ABSTRACT Deficiency, excess or imbalance in the combinations of nutritional elements can influence the response of plants to pathogen infection by either increasing the level of defense or favoring the occurrence of diseases. The rose is susceptible to several pathogens and the consumer market requires flower stalks with no level of damage. Therefore, in the production of roses the application of pesticides is performed in a preventive and intensive way, which causes environmental contamination. This study evaluated the effects of chemical fertilization management and intercropping with green manure on the incidence and severity of downy mildew and powdery mildew in rosebushes grown in an Integrated Production System. The experiment was conducted in a...

Development of the shrimp industry in the Western Indian Ocean - a holistic approach of vertical integration, from domestication and biosecurity to product certification ArchiMer
Le Groumellec, Marc; Rigolet, Vincent; Panchayuthapani, Duraisamy; Vandeputte, Marc; Rao, Vemulapalli Manavendra.
The shrimp farming industry in the western Indian Ocean started with Aqualma’s project in 1989, and now several companies farm shrimp in the Mozambique Channel. Despite the remoteness of these projects and their high investment and operating costs, they compete in the global marketplace by efficiently producing high value quality products. To address sustainability and biosecurity issues, Aqualma developed domesticated specific pathogenfree (SPF) broodstock of Penaeus monodon from western Indian Ocean stocks, which have been its exclusive source of post-larvae since 2003. Specific molecular diagnostic tools have been developed for each endemic pathogen detected since 1996, and these are used for routine surveillance of Aqualma’s shrimp stocks along with...

Certifying the French population of Crassostrea gigas free from exotic diseases : a risk analysis approach ArchiMer
Thebault, Anne; Berthe, Franck; Audige, L..
Sample-size calculation in the context of the surveys aimed at substantiating freedom from infection have been commonly undertaken an terrestrial animals over recent years, but not on aquatic animals. A recent model developed by Audigé and Beckett in 1999 can be used to plan and assess animal health surveys. The aim of this study was to adapt that model for marine aquaculture, in particular to help in planning surveys aimed at substantiating freedom form two exotic diseases, mikrocytosis and perkinsosis, in the French population of Crassostrea gigas. As a first approach, farmed animals are so frequent that it would be very difficult to be representative of a single area or zone. To find the most appropriate sampling scheme, the model was run using @Risk...

Public and Private Institutional Responses to Advocacy Attacks: The Case of the Global Cocoa Industry and Child Labour Abuse AgEcon
Clark, Alexandra; Gow, Hamish R..
Over the past decade the global agri-food industry has come under increasing attack by advocacy groups related to their production and marketing processes (Bowmar and Gow, 2009). Advocacy groups have used these attacks to exploit the growing intergenerational disconnect between consumers and farming to campaign for narrowly defined political ideals while challenging traditional agricultural practices (Olin, 1999). This disconnect has provided advocacy groups the opportunity to use boycotts and other media attacks to severely adverse impact not only branded manufacturers and retailers, but their farmer suppliers. The agri-food industry’s challenge is to understand how to develop appropriate individual and collective responses to these attacks that minimize...

TRACEABILITY AND CERTIFICATION IN MEAT SUPPLY CHAINS AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Velthuis, Annet G.J.; Hogeveen, Henk; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
Food safety problems such as the BSE and dioxin crises focused attention on traceability systems and the certification of such systems. This study analyzes the status and perspectives of traceability systems and certification schemes, and reviews their potential costs and benefits. Results indicate that traceability and certification in meat supply chains comprise a very dynamic area with an increasing impact. Necessary transparency, control of livestock epidemics, increasing due diligence, and a declining role for governments are critical factors. Findings also reveal there is a general focus on the technical characteristics of traceability and certification, and there is a lack of economic considerations. Therefore, specific topics are emphasized for an...

Quality Standards for Food Products - A Particular Burden for Small Producers in Developing Countries? AgEcon
Chemnitz, Christine; Grethe, Harald; Kleinwechter, Ulrich.
This paper develops an analytical framework which structures the problem of whether, how and to what extent small producers in developing countries are disadvantaged by the increasing prevalence of food quality standards. Based on a literature review, the empirical evidence is structured and research gaps are identified. The paper finds that small and medium producers rarely comply without support from downstream actors. In case of well-educated and relatively wealthy farmers, forward integration is also found. No empirical support exists for the intuitively appealing hypothesis of a lower cost of compliance per unit of output for large producers.

Justified hopes or utopian thinking? The suitability of coffee certification schemes as a business model for small-scale producers AgEcon
Beuchelt, Tina; Zeller, Manfred; Oberthur, Thomas.
The marketing of coffee through group-based, certified market channels is often promoted by governments and donors as a viable business model for poor small-scale farmers. Organic and fairtrade coffees have become very popular among socially, environmentally and health conscious consumers in recent years. While coffee certification programs have been in place for over fifteen years, there are few studies on the welfare impacts of certification schemes. Therefore, this research seeks to analyse the impacts of certification on poverty alleviation and to identify the critical factors which explain success or failure of certification schemes. We use a combination of qualitative and quantitative research, comparing small-scale coffee producers in northern...

Verifying Credence Attributes in Livestock Production AgEcon
Olynk, Nicole J.; Tonsor, Glynn T.; Wolf, Christopher A..
Livestock producers can respond to increasing consumer demand for certain production process attributes by providing verifiable information on the practices used. Consumer willingness to pay data were used to inform producer decision-making regarding selection of verification entities for four key production process attributes in the production of pork chops and milk. The potential for informing farm-level decision-making with information about consumer demand for product and production process attributes exists beyond the two products assessed as example cases in this analysis.

REFLECTIONS ON RELEVANCE OF PROFESSIONAL JOURNALS AgEcon
Robison, Lindon J.; Colyer, Dale.
It appears the major private benefit from peer reviewed journals such as the Review of Agricultural Economics (RAE) is certification. To maintain public support for our journals, increased efforts are needed to demonstrate the social benefits from peer reviewed publications. Research cost considerations have led agricultural economists to emphasize applied disciplinary work using secondary data and to ignore the important work of careful data collection and reporting. Moreover, pressures to publish have led to more isolated research efforts ignoring other disciplines. Recommendations to improve the relevance of journal publications include more active efforts by journal editors to make applied journals such as RAE more accessible to the public.

Quality Certification by Geographical Indications, Trademarks and Firm Reputation AgEcon
Menapace, Luisa; Moschini, GianCarlo.
We study firm reputation as a mechanism to assure product quality in perfectly competitive markets in a context in which both certification and trademarks are available. Shapiro’s (1983) model of reputation is extended to reflect both collective and firm-specific reputations, and this framework is used to study certification and trademarks for food products with a regional identity, known as geographical indications (GIs). Our model yields two primary results. First, in markets with asymmetric information and moral hazard problems, credible certification schemes reduce the cost of establishing reputation and lead to welfare gains compared to a situation in which only private trademarks are available. Hence, certification improves the ability of reputation...
