Sagitta lucida is a large chaetognath (max. length = 36mm), characterized by a transparent and flaccid body, a collarette restricted to the neck region, long anterior fins, narrow and rayless on their anterior two-thirds, and ovoid seminal vesicles. Sagitta adenensis , another large species (length = 32 mn), with also a flaccid body, has a collarette, anterior teeth nearly as numerous as posterior ones, lateral fins with rays only on the outer edge. The two specimens have been caught in a trawl from a depth of 400 m, near Djibouti. |

This paper reviews the quantitative morphological variation published for Sagitta setosa Müller, 1847 and two other species described within the S. serosa-complex, viz., S. euxina Moltschanoff, 1909 from the Black Sea, and S. batava Biersteker & Van der Spoel, 1966 from the Scheldt Estuary (Netherlands). Data on total (body) length, caudal length, numbers of teeth and hooks, ovary length, and dimensions of fins are compared between these three taxa. Additionally, samples from the North Sea, Mediterranean, and Black Sea are compared to look for geographic differences. Specimens from the Mediterranean were smallest with relatively long caudal segments, and few teeth and hooks, whereas specimens from the Black Sea were largest with relatively short caudal... |

Specimens of Spadella cephaloptera from Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Gomera (Canary Islands) were compared biometrically in regards to morphometric and meristic characters. Variation exists among the populations on the islands as well as between the islands. The populations on Gomera seem more distinct from the populations on Tenerife and Gran Canaria than the two latter are mutually. An apparent decline in the number of adults occurs in July, which is related to a decrease in the number of eggs. A shortage of food can explain the reduced fecundity of the specimens. S. cephaloptera prefers habitats protected from the influence of waves. |
