Searching Explanations of Nature in the Mirror World of Math Ecology and Society
Scheffer, Marten; Wageningen Agricultural University; Marten.Scheffer@wur.nl.
Despite the huge scientific progress of the last century, the dynamics of complex systems such as the atmosphere, human societies, and ecosystems remain difficult to understand and predict. Nonetheless, our ability to carve the future depends largely on our insight into the functioning of such complex systems. Complex systems are the focus of considerable mathematical theory. Rather than referring to any particular part of the world, such theory addresses what seems to be another world: a world of strange attractors, catastrophe folds, torus destruction, and homoclinic bifurcations. So disparate is the language and notation in this discipline that it is hard to imagine that it has any thing to do with reality as we know it. Indeed, it deals with a kind of...

Characterizing the chaotic nature of ocean ventilation ArchiMer
Macgilchrist, Graeme A.; Marshall, David P.; Johnson, Helen L.; Lique, Camille; Thomas, Matthew.
Ventilation of the upper ocean plays an important role in climate variability on interannual to decadal timescales by influencing the exchange of heat and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and ocean. The turbulent nature of ocean circulation, manifest in a vigorous mesoscale eddy field, means that pathways of ventilation, once thought to be quasi-laminar, are in fact highly chaotic. We characterize the chaotic nature of ventilation pathways according to a nondimensional filamentation number, which estimates the reduction in filament width of a ventilated fluid parcel due to mesoscale strain. In the subtropical North Atlantic of an eddy-permitting ocean model, the filamentation number is large everywhere across three upper ocean density...

Determinism, chaos, self-organization and entropy Anais da ABC (AABC)
PONTES,JOSÉ.
ABSTRACT We discuss two changes of paradigms that occurred in science along the XXth century: the end of the mechanist determinism, and the end of the apparent incompatibility between biology, where emergence of order is law, and physics, postulating a progressive loss of order in natural systems. We recognize today that three mechanisms play a major role in the building of order: the nonlinear nature of most evolution laws, along with distance to equilibrium, and with the new paradigm, that emerged in the last forty years, as we recognize that networks present collective order properties not found in the individual nodes. We also address the result presented by Blumenfeld (L.A. Blumenfeld, Problems of Biological Physics, Springer, Berlin, 1981) showing...

Disentangling the dynamic core: a research program for a neurodynamics at the large-scale Biol. Res.
LE VAN QUYEN,MICHEL.
My purpose in this paper is to sketch a research direction based on Francisco Varela's pioneering work in neurodynamics (see also Rudrauf et al. 2003, in this issue). Very early on he argued that the internal coherence of every mental-cognitive state lies in the global self-organization of the brain activities at the large-scale, constituting a fundamental pole of integration called here a "dynamic core". Recent neuroimaging evidence appears to broadly support this hypothesis and suggests that a global brain dynamics emerges at the large scale level from the cooperative interactions among widely distributed neuronal populations. Despite a growing body of evidence supporting this view, our understanding of these large-scale brain processes remains hampered...

Non-linear dynamics of chromosome condensation induced by colcemid BABT
Fernandes,Thiago de Salazar e; Silva,Isvânia Maria Serafim da; Moraes,Renato Barros; Aguiar,Leandro Álvaro de Alcântara; Amaral,Ademir; Barbosa,Catão Temístocles; Nogueira,Romildo de Albuquerque.
This study investigated the dynamical process of chromosome condensation after colcemid treatment. Two pairs of human chromosomes, #2 and #3, were highlighted for the accurate identification by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). A computerized image analysis system was used to measure the lengths of the two pairs of chromosomes averaged over 50 metaphases of different cultures with colcemid (0.5 µg/mL) added either at 3 or 48 h of a total 72 h culture period. For determining whether the process of chromosome condensation was chaotic or random, the algorithm of Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) was used. In order to evaluate the power of the method, the data were shuffled and DFA was performed again. It was found that colcemid prolonged treatment...
