B chromosomes in a population of Astyanax eigenmanniorum (Characiformes, Characidae) from the Araguari River Basin (Uberlândia, MG, Brazil) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Torres-Mariano,Alessandra Ribeiro; Morelli,Sandra.
A cytogenetic study was conducted on an Astyanax eigenmanniorum population from the Caetano Stream (18° 44' 56" S/ 048° 18' 39" W) - in Uberlândia, MG, Brazil - showing a modal diploid number of 48 chromosomes in the standard male and female karyotypes. However, in several specimens it was also possible to observe metaphases with one or two B chromosomes, increasing the diploid number to 49 or 50 chromosomes, respectively. The supernumerary chromosomes were totally heterochromatic and highlighted after C-banding. The silver-stained nucleolus organizing regions (Ag-NORs) were located in at least five chromosomes of the standard karyotype, thus characterizing a multiple NOR system in the species. This is the first occurrence of an A. eigenmanniorum...

Age, growth, mortality and yield per recruit of the dourado Salminus brasiliensis, Corumbá Reservoir, Goiás State, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Tos,Claudenice Dei; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Agostinho,Angelo Antônio; Batista,Rosana Paulo.
In order to evaluate the fate of the migratory species dourado Salminus brasiliensis in the first years of impoundment in Corumbá Reservoir we estimated age, growth, mortality and yield per recruit. Samplings were carried out monthly in Corumbá Reservoir and its main tributaries (Goiás State) from March 1998 to February 1999 using gillnets. After one year of impoundment, age was estimated from scales and the maximum number of rings was six for males and five for females. Rings are formed annually in May and June. The asymptotic length and growth rate for males and females were 37.1 cm and 0.77 and 56.6 cm and 0.52, respectively. A dominance of juveniles was verified in the reservoir and its tributaries. The instantaneous total mortality rate (Z) was 1.59...

Habitat and community structure modulate fish interactions in a neotropical clearwater river Neotropical Ichthyology
Nunes,Lucas T.; Morais,Renato A.; Longo,Guilherme O.; Sabino,José; Floeter,Sergio R..
ABSTRACT Species interactions can modulate the diversity and enhance the stability of biological communities in aquatic ecosystems. Despite previous efforts to describe fish interactions in tropical rivers, the role of habitat characteristics, community structure, and trophic traits over these interactions is still poorly understood. To investigate among-habitat variation in substratum feeding pressure and agonistic interactions between fishes, we used remote underwater videos in three habitats of a clearwater river in the Central Western, Brazil. We also performed visual surveys to estimate the abundance and biomass of fishes and proposed a trophic classification to understand how these variables can affect fish interactions. Community structure was the...

Two new species of Odontostilbe historically hidden under O. microcephala (Characiformes: Cheirodontinae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Chuctaya,Junior; Bührnheim,Cristina M.; Malabarba,Luiz R..
ABSTRACT Specimens historically identified as Odontostilbe microcephala from the upper rio Paraná and Andean piedmont tributaries of the río Paraguay are reviewed and split in three species. We found that the distribution of O. microcephala is restricted to the Andean slope of the río Paraguay basin. The species is distinguished from congeners with subterminal mouth by the elongate body, usually 10-12 gill rakers on upper branch and smaller horizontal orbital diameter (24.6-32.8 % HL, mean 28.7%). Specimens from upper rio Paraná constitute two new species, diagnosed from other Cheirodontinae by the presence of mesopterygoid teeth, grouped on median portion and forming a continuous row. The new species are distinguished from each other by having...

How does diet influence the reproductive seasonality of tropical freshwater fish?: A case study of a characin in a tropical mountain river Neotropical Ichthyology
Ballesteros,Tania M.; Torres-Mejia,Mauricio; Ramírez-Pinilla,Martha P..
Seasonal breeding of tropical freshwater fish may be synchronized with periods of high food consumption. We explored this hypothesis by studying the relationship between diet and reproductive activity of Creagrutus guanes (Teleostei, Characidae). Our results showed that C. guanes had a generalist and omnivorous diet dominated by aquatic insects (mainly Diptera larvae) and seeds. Creagrutus guanes did not show intersexual or ontogenetic variation in diet. Peaks of feeding activity during rainy months were not synchronized with breeding in dry months. Our results do not support the hypothesis that the reproductive season has to be synchronized with high food consumption. We discussed the hypothesis fat reserves may be an important factor for the...

Induced reproduction in a migratory teleost species by water level drawdown Neotropical Ichthyology
Chehade,Chayrra; Cassel,Mônica; Borella,Maria Inês.
Captive reproduction is one of the problems faced in aquaculture requiring the manipulation of environmental factors and/or hormonal treatment. Thus, we seek to verify experimentally which gonadal changes were present in mature individuals of Astyanax altiparanae arising from decreased water level. Collections were made every four hours, initiated four hours before and finished 28 hours after stimulation, at the Fish Farming Station of Companhia Energética de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. The gonads were analyzed by light microscopy. The females had ovaries in the spawning capable phase until 12h; in 16h, in a more advanced stage of spawning capable phase; and, from 20h, in the regressing phase. Males had testes in the spawning capable phase until 8h; in...

Meso and microhabitat analysis and feeding habits of small nektonic characins (Teleostei: Characiformes) in Neotropical streams Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ceneviva-Bastos,Mônica; Casatti,Lilian; Rossa-Feres,Denise Cerqueira.
The habitat use and feeding habits of a set of nektonic fish species often found in small low-gradient streams in Brazil were investigated. The core species in the present study was Knodus moenkhausii (Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903), the most abundant of five species in the nektonic guild. Records of the species in 22 streams indicate that K. moenkhausii is associated, on a mesohabitat scale, with runs, and on a microhabitat scale, with sandy bottoms, intermediate depth, and open sites without coverage or submerged vegetation. During snorkeling observations, two additional nektonic registered species showed spatial segregation from K. moenkhausii with respect to foraging microhabitats. Feeding habits of the observed nektonic species were significantly...

Garcia,José Antônio Dias; Chini,Helena A.S.; Maistro,Edson Luis; Quagio-Grassiotto,Irani.
Oogenesis involves a set of transformations which are undergone by female germ cells These cells change into oogonias and then into mature oocytes. Sexually mature female fish were collected monthly, during one year, from the Sapucaí River, a tributary of the Rio Grande, which is part of the Furnas Reservoir in the state of Minas Gerais. During the several stages of maturation, we observed small round oogonias with a large nucleus, a single nucleolus, and weakly stained cytoplasm with eosinophilic granules. The primary oocytes showed a large basophilic nucleus, with a developed peripheral nucleolus and a reduced cytoplasm. The previtellogenic oocytes presented voluminous cytoplasm and nucleus with several small peripheral nucleoli. The oocytes underwent...
