Epidemiological studies of short and long sleepers have not been conducted previously. We collected socioeconomic, psychological, and polysomnographic characteristics of 6501 parents (3252 men and 3249 women) of 4036 primary school children in Guangzhou city. The study data were collected in three phases. The overall prevalence of short (5 h or less) and long (10 h or more) sleep duration was 0.52 and 0.64%, respectively. Long sleepers had higher Eysenck Personality Questionnaire neuroticism scores [odds ratio (OR)=1.224, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.047-1.409] and lower education levels (OR=0.740, 95%CI=0.631-0.849) than short sleepers. In the polysomnographic assessment, short, long, and normal sleepers (7-8 h) shared similar durations of Stage 3 sleep... |

Abstract The present study aimed to develop extruded corn breakfast cereal enriched with whole peach palm flour. A 22 central composite rotatable design was used, and the cereal was processed in a ZKS-30 co-rotational twin-screw extruder (Werner and Pfleiderer), followed by its physicochemical, technological and microbiological characterization. The technological analysis revealed higher expansion and lower hardness as well as adequate lightness and water-absorption and water-solubility indices of the breakfast cereal at low moisture and intermediate peach palm flour contents. Moreover, 3.84% moisture, 0.63% ash, 6.09% protein, 0.39% lipids, 85.94% carbohydrates, 3.11% fiber and 246 RE of total carotenoids were found in the physicochemical analysis, and... |

Rationale for EST and genome sequencing of the Pacific oyster: its membership of the Lophotrochozoa, an little studied branch of the Eukaryotes, its worldwide aquacultural importance (4.2 million metric tons, worth 3.5 billion US dollars), its high fecundity, with concomitantly high DNA polymorphism, its use as a biosensor of coastal pollution. In 2004, an international community of biologists, the Oyster Genome Consortium (OGC) led by D. Hedgecock (University of Southern California) and uniting 70 participants from 10 countries, first presented the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas as a genome-sequencing candidate to Joint Genome Institute (JGI, USA) (Hedgecock et al., 2005). Besides this project (that remains to be accepted), several EST... |

In this study, we evaluate the preference of consumers in Niger for different tuwo or couscous characteristics using conjoint analysis. Data were collected through a structured survey administered at 4 sites. Preferences are estimated for three products (couscous, fermented tuwo and nonfermented tuwo) made from 5 pearl millet cutivars. We provide relative valuation for different traits by type of product. Results show that product taste, visual characteristics, and textural attributes are important. The different valuation of characteristics across products and ethnic groups, however, suggests that signals regarding preferences may be very noisy. Consequently, it might be difficult to design pearl millet improvement programs, or food processing... |
