Chemical characterization of the lignins of corn and soybean agricultural residues Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Saliba,E.O.S.; Rodriguez,N.M.; Piló-Veloso,D.; Morais,S.A.L..
Corn (CR) and soybean (SR) culture wastes were submitted to extraction with organic solvents for lignin isolation (LGS). The obtained lignin was chemically characterized, and based on studies of functional groups and microanalyses, it was possible to determine the minimum formula. LGS of CR has characteristics that resemble wood and of bamboo lignin, possessing a larger amount of methoxyl groups and vanillin.

Chemical and botanical characterization of Chilean propolis and biological activity on cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus BJM
Barrientos,Leticia; Herrera,Christian L.; Montenegro,Gloria; Ortega,Ximena; Veloz,Jorge; Alvear,Marysol; Cuevas,Alejandro; Saavedra,Nicolás; Salazar,Luis A..
Propolis is a non-toxic natural substance with multiple pharmacological properties including anticancer, antioxidant, fungicidal, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory among others. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical and botanical characterization of Chilean propolis samples and to evaluate their biological activity against the cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. Twenty propolis samples were obtained from beekeeping producers from the central and southern regions of Chile. The botanical profile was determined by palynological analysis. Total phenolic contents were determined using colorimetric assays. Reverse phase HPLC and HPLC-MS were used to determine the chemical composition. The minimum...

Chemical constituents and technological functional properties of acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC.) waste flour Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Marques,Tamara Rezende; Corrêa,Angelita Duarte; Lino,Jéssica Boreli dos Reis; Abreu,Celeste Maria Patto de; Simão,Anderson Assaid.
Acerola is a fruit that can be consumed in the form of juice and pulp. However, during its processing, a large amount of waste is generated (seed and bagasse). Adding value to these by-products is of great interest, since their use can enrich foods with nutrients and fiber. In this study, we performed phytochemical screening, determined the proximate and mineral composition, bioactive compounds and the technological functional properties of acerola seed flour and acerola bagasse flour. Seeds were dried in a ventilated oven at ± 45 °C and the bagasse was lyophilized. Samples were ground, stored in flasks protected from light. Phytochemical screening revealed metabolites of nutritional and pharmacological interest and no potentially toxic substances in the...

Influence of preservation methods on the bioactivity of mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomes) from the Brazilian savannah Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
PAULA,Ladyslene Christhyns; SILVA,Flávio Alves; SILVA,Edson Pablo; ASQUIERI,Eduardo Ramirez; DAMIANI,Clarissa.
Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of the bioactive compounds and the antioxidant activity of raw mangaba fruit (Hancornia speciosa Gomes), in addition to the influence of preservation methods (freezing, lyophilization, and foam layer drying) on these biocompounds. Samples were evaluated for ascorbic acid, phenolic compound, and carotenoid content and total antioxidant activity by the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP methods. The analyses were performed in triplicate for each sample and the results were expressed as the mean ± standard deviation. A significant correlation was observed between the content of total phenolic compounds and the total antioxidant activity, as determined by the FRAP method, which showed that the content of ascorbic acid...

Chemical characterization and antimicrobial activity of essential oils of salvia L. species Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Pierozan,Morgana Karen; Pauletti,Gabriel Fernandes; Rota,Luciana; Santos,Ana Cristina Atti dos; Lerin,Lindomar Alberto; di Luccio,Marco; Mossi,Altemir José; Atti-Serafini,Luciana; Cansian,Rogério Luis; Oliveira,José Vladimir.
In this work, the essential oils of S. officinalis, S. sclarea, S. lavandulifolia and S. triloba were chemically analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometry detector (GC/MSD), and their antimicrobial activity was tested against 10 microorganisms using the disk diffusion method and the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) technique. The following major compounds were identified in the essential oils: α - and β-thujone, camphor and 1,8-cineole, except in S. sclarea, where linalool, linalyl acetate and α-terpineol were the major constituents. The antimicrobial activity showed significant differences (p < 0.05) only when obtained by the MIC method. Gram-positive microorganisms presented larger sensitivity for the essential oils. The...
