Foliar application of 28-homobrassinolide mitigates salinity stress by increasing the efficiency of photosynthesis in Brassica juncea Acta Botanica
Alyemeni,Mohammed Nasser; Hayat,Shamsul; Wijaya,Leonard; Anaji,Abdullah.
Prior to sowing, seeds of Brassica juncea Czern and Coss cv. Varuna were soaked in water (controls) or in 50, 100 or 150 mM of sodium chloride (NaCl) for 6 h. The resulting plants, at 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing (DAS) were either not treated (controls) or were treated with aqueous solutions of the hormone 28-homobrassinolide (HBL), which was applied to their foliage in concentrations of 10-10, 10-8 or 10-6 M. The concentration of NaCl showed an inverse correlation with the activity of nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1), the activity of carbonic anhydrase (EC 4.2.1.1), chlorophyll content at 60 DAS, the rate of photosynthesis at 60 DAS, and seed yield at 140 DAS (at harvest), all of which decreased in parallel with increases in NaCl concentration. However,...

Effects of sucrose and irradiance on germination and early gametophyte growth of the endangered tree fern Dicksonia sellowiana Hook (Dicksoniaceae) Acta Botanica
Renner,Gladys Daniela Rogge; Randi,Áurea Maria.
It is an endangered tree fern that grows in mixed umbrophylus forests in the tropics. Sterilized spores were germinated at 25 ± 2ºC under a 16-hour photoperiod, in Dyer and MS medium supplemented with 0 to 5% sucrose. The germination was lower with the addition of sucrose. Dry mass was higher in 30-day-old gametophytes cultivated in Dyer medium with the addition of 3 to 5% of sucrose. The dry mass decreased in 30-day-old gametophytes cultivated in Dyer and MS media without sucrose and in MS medium with the addition of 4 or 5% of sucrose. The effect of different irradiance on the germination and early gametophyte development of D. sellowiana was analyzed in the autumn of 1998 (May until July). Conical flasks containing spores were kept over a period of 49...

Analytical techniques used to extract chlorophyll from plant leaves are destructive and based on the use of organic solvents. This study proposes a non-destructive quantification of the photosynthetic pigment concentration in cotton leaves using two portable chlorophyll meters, the SPAD-502 and the CLOROFILOG 1030. After obtaining 200 leaf discs, each with an area of 113 mm2, the greening rate in each disc was determined by the average of five readings from both meters. Immediately after measurement, 5 mL of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was added, and the samples were kept in a water bath at 70ºC for 30 min. After cooling, 3 mL of the liquid extract was used for analyses by spectrophotometry at 470, 646 and 663 nm. Mathematical models were adjusted from...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between excess manganese and waterlogging tolerance in 18th selection cycle Zea mays L. cv. Saracura plants. Maize plants were transferred to plastic receptacles containing solutions with different concentrations of manganese. Leaves and roots were evaluated at the beginning of treatment and after 7, 14, and 21 days for chlorophyll content, biomass production and antioxidant metabolism. Mn was strongly translocated from the roots to the leaves, triggering a decrease in chlorophyll content. Excess Mn promoted an increase in reactive oxygen species that was accompanied by higher levels of antioxidative enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation. Zea mays L. cv. Saracura efficiently sequestered...

Physiological aspects of sun and shade leaves of Lithraea molleoides (Vell.) Engl. (Anacardiaceae) BABT
Dias,Jaqueline; Pimenta,José Antonio; Medri,Moacyr Eurípedes; Boeger,Maria Regina Torres; Freitas,Claudinei Toledo de.
The aim of this work was to compare the physiological parameters of sun and shade leaves of a specimen of L. molleoides. The higher-positional leaves, classified as sun leaves, presented similar photosynthetic rate, lower chlorophyill contents (a, b and total), same a chlorophyll /b chlrorophyll rate, lower transpiratory rate, same stomatal conductance and intercellular concentration of CO2 as the lower-positional leaves, classified as shade leaves. Nutrient concentration, except for Ca and Mg, was the same for both sun and shade leaves. The physiological parameter responses indicated that although receiving lower light intensity, the shade leaves had the same capacity to grow and develop as the sun leaves.

The influence of light intensity on anatomical structure and pigment contents of Tradescantia pallida (Rose) Hunt. cv. purpurea Boom (Commelinaceae) leaves BABT
Paiva,Élder Antonio Sousa; Isaias,Rosy Mary dos Santos; Vale,Fernando Henrique Aguiar; Queiroz,Cristina Generosa de Senna.
The aim of this work was to study the effects of five different light intensities on the anatomical structure and on the pigment contents in leaves of Tradescantia pallida cv. purpurea. Once light intensity became lower, the thickness of leaf lamina and mesophyll were reduced. Adjustments in light-harvesting antenna size were observed: an increase in chlorophyll a + b/carotenoids ratio at low-light growth conditions. There was a strong positive linear correlation between the light intensity values and anthocyanin contents. Hence, T. pallida cv. purpurea acclimation to distinct environmental conditions might be related to its capacity of altering structurally and physiologically its phenotype.

Sodium Chloride-Induced leaf senescence in Hydrocotyle bonariensis Lam. and Foeniculum vulgare L. BABT
Haddad,Claudia R. B.; Mazzafera,Paulo.
Leaf senescence induced by sodium chloride was studied in Hydrocotyle bonariensis Lam. and Foeniculum vulgare L. Both species belong to Umbelliferae family, however only H. bonariensis grows spontaneously in sandy soils of coastal regions (saline soils). Leaves of plants receiving nutrient solutions containing different concentrations of NaCl were evaluated for fresh and dry weights and chlorophyll content. The denaturating electrophoretic profiles of leaf proteins were also studied. Sodium chloride changed the protein profile of F. vulgare and hastened the leaf senescence of both the species. However, plants of H. bonariensis receiving 599 mM NaCl lasted longer than F. vulgare. Therefore, the occurrence of H. bonariensis in saline soils might be related...
