Carnations, Dianthus caryophyllus, have been cultivated in Chile for several decades as a cut flower crop. At the present time, floriculture occupies 2,124 ha, of which 180 ha are devoted to carnations. Almost all carnations produced are sold in the domestic market. Several diseases affect carnations, among them fairyring leaf spot (Cladosporium echinulatum), the most important foliar disease in Chile. Different control alternatives for fairy-ring spot were evaluated on the carnation cv. Sarinah in terms of disease incidence and severity. The study was performed in June-August 2003 with a commercial carnation planting in a greenhouse located in Champa(33° 49' S, 70° 45' W) that in previous growing seasons reported a high incidence of fairyring leaf spot.... |

Two new species of Cladosporium found on necrotic needles of Pinus ponderosa trees in Patagonia, Argentina, are described as C. chubutense and C. pini-ponderosae. An additional isolate from dead leaves of Cortaderia collected in Colombia, which is a sister taxon to the species occurring on Pinus, is described as Cladosporium colombiae. These species are phylogenetically closely related, but differ from each other and other known species by multilocus sequence data, phenetic characters and culture characteristics |

The Cape Floral Region represents one of the world’s biodiversity hot spots, with a high level of plant, animal and insect endemism. The fungi occurring in this region, however, remain poorly studied. It is widely postulated that each plant species should harbour at least five to six unique fungal species, a number that we regard to be a huge underestimate. To test this hypothesis, we decided to study a single senescent flower of Phaenocoma prolifera (‘everlasting’; Asteraceae) collected in South Africa, and posed the question as to how many different species of fungi could be isolated and cultivated from 10 leaf bracts. Using a damp chamber technique, numerous microfungi could be induced to sporulate, enabling most of them to be successfully isolated on... |

During a study on the diversity of mites of agricultural importance, we made an inventory of pathogens infecting plant inhabiting and edaphic mites, mainly in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Several species of Eriophyoidea were found to be infected by Hirsutella sp. Resting spores of Entomophthorales were observed in mites of the following families: Ascidae, Phytoseiidae, Stigmaeidae, Tetranychidae and Tydeidae. A Cladosporium sp. infection was noted in the eriophyid Retracus johnstoni Keifer, a pest of the palm tree Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman. The fungus was isolated and cultured in artificial medium. The possible use of the observed pathogens for microbial control purposes is discussed. |
