Growth dynamics of young trees of Araucaria angustifolia and Pinus taeda PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Machado, Sebastião do Amaral; Figura, Marco Aurélio; Silva, Luís César Rodrigues da; Mendes Nascimento, Rodrigo Geroni; Quirino, Sandra Mara dos Santos; Téo, Saulo Jorge.
The objective of this research was to investigate the monthly growth rhythm of young trees of Araucaria angustifolia and Pinus taeda throughout the vegetative year and to establish its correlation with climatic variables. Monthly measurements of diameter and total height were carried out in one stand of A. angustifolia and two of Pinus taeda. Correlation matrices among the current monthly increments and the climatic variables indicated that the development of Pinus taeda is mostly affected by photoperiod and by minimum, average, and maximum temperatures, while A. angustifolia growth is affected mostly by minimum and average temperatures. doi: 10.4336/2010.pfb.30.62.165

Seasonality of insects in the semi-arid Caatinga of northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Vasconcellos,Alexandre; Andreazze,Ricardo; Almeida,Adriana M.; Araujo,Helder F. P.; Oliveira,Eduardo S.; Oliveira,Uirandé.
Insects are essential to tropical ecosystems functioning. In semi-arid regions, the increase in abundance and/or activity (e.g. reproduction and foraging behavior) of insects is usually associated with climatic variables. The present study investigates which climatic variables are best predictors of insect abundance in an area of Caatinga in northeastern Brazil. Individuals were sampled for 24 months using Malaise and pitfall traps, and beating trays. A total of 58925 individuals belonging to 20 insect orders were collected. The most abundant orders were Hymenoptera, Diptera, Collembola and Coleoptera. Most orders studied showed a clear maximum abundance in the rainy season. Rainfall and humidity were the best predictors of insect abundance in the...

Attias,Nina; Raíces,Daniel S. L.; Pessoa,Flávia S.; Albuquerque,Hermano; Jordão-Nogueira,Tássia; Modesto,Thiago C.; Bergallo,Helena de G..
The spiny rats of the genus Trinomys Thomas, 1921 have a broad distribution in the Atlantic Forests of southeastern Brazil. However, some species are known only from their type locality and adjacent areas. In our study, nine areas in the state of Rio de Janeiro were surveyed and three species of the genus were captured - Trinomys dimidiatus (Günther, 1877), T. setosus (Desmarest, 1817) and T. gratiosus bonafidei (MOOJEN, 1948). We extended the distribution of T. gratiosus bonafidei in 100 km, in a straight line to the northwest, and into an area of Semidecidual Seasonal Forest. We captured T. setosus, which had not been previously recorded in the state, in the municipality of Cambuci, extending its distribution 150 km, in a straight line to the east of its...

Temporal variations of Collembola (Arthropoda: Hexapoda) in the semiarid Caatinga in northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ferreira,Aila Soares; Bellini,Bruno Cavalcante; Vasconcellos,Alexandre.
The richness and abundance of Collembola species can be influenced by many biotic and abiotic factors, mainly humidity. The semiarid region of Brazil is dominated by Caatinga dryland vegetation which experiences distinct seasonal alterations of its physiognomy linked to regional rainfall regimes. The present study evaluated the environmental factors affecting populations of Collembola in an area of Caatinga vegetation in Northeastern Brazil during a 12-months period. Specimens were collected by active searching in ten 20 x 20 m plots, with a sampling effort of 1 hour/person/plot. A total of 1231 specimens were collected, comprising 15 morphospecies, 12 genera, and nine families. Both species richness and individual abundances demonstrated oscillations...

Vefago,Manoela Bez; Silva,Ana Carolina da; Cuchi,Tarik; Santos,Guilherme Neto dos; Nunes,Amanda da Silva; Rodrigues Júnior,Luiz Carlos; Lima,Carla Luciane; Gross,Aline; Kilca,Ricardo de Vargas; Higuchi,Pedro.
ABSTRACT: The natural regeneration process is essential for forest maintenance since it is critical for establishing new tree individuals. This study aimed to improve the understanding of the regenerative component dynamics of Araucaria Forests in Southern Brazil. We investigated the effects of climate, light, tree component structure and anthropogenic disturbance on tree species regeneration. Regenerating communities from six different fragments in forest remnants of the “Planalto Sul Catarinense” region was evaluated in permanent plots two years after the first inventory. The following demographic rates were determined: recruitment, mortality, net change in the number of individuals and the changes to both upper and lower height classes. The following...

Phenology, caudex growth and age estimation of Cyathea corcovadensis (Raddi) Domin (Cyatheaceae) in a subtropical forest in southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Neumann,Micheline Krüger; Schneider,Paulo Henrique; Schmitt,Jairo Lizandro.
Cyathea corcovadensis (Raddi) Domin occurs in northeastern, southeastern and southern Brazil, being widely distributed in the last. This was a three-year study, conducted from August 2008 to July 2011, in which we evaluated C. corcovadensis in a subtropical forest in southern Brazil. For the first year (August 2008 to July 2009), we monitored 30 plants on a monthly basis in order to analyze phenological events (vegetative and reproductive) and caudex growth. We also estimated the ages of the plants. Except in June and July of 2009, monthly leaf emergence and senescence were continuous and irregular, which prevented total leaf abscission, during that first year. Leaf emergence, senescence and fertility correlated with photoperiod, temperature and plant...

Predicting geographic distributions of Phacellodomus species (Aves: Furnariidae) in South America based on ecological niche modeling Biological Sciences
Costa, Maria da Salete Gurgel; Universidade de Brasília; Batista, Renato de Carvalho; Universidade de Brasília; Gurgel-Gonçalves, Rodrigo; UCB.
Phacellodomus Reichenbach, 1853, comprises nine species of Furnariids that occur in South America in open and generally dry areas. This study estimated the geographic distributions of Phacellodomus species in South America by ecological niche modeling. Applying maximum entropy method, models were produced for eight species based on six climatic variables and 949 occurrence records. Since highest climatic suitability for Phacellodomus species has been estimated in open and dry areas, the Amazon rainforest areas are not very suitable for these species. Annual precipitation and minimum temperature of the coldest month are the variables that most influence the models. Phacellodomus species occurred in 35 ecoregions of South America. Chaco and Uruguayan...
