CHARACTERIZATION OF CLOGGING MATERIAL FROM HORIZONTAL SUBSURFACE FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLAND SYSTEMS REA
Miranda,Suymara T.; Matos,Antonio T.; Matos,Mateus P.; Borges,Alisson C.; Baptestin,Gheila C. F..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the material composition responsible for clogging the porous medium of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF–CW) systems, which is detrimental to a proper system operation. Six completely clogged HSSF–CWs were used after treatment of swine wastewater. Operating conditions of these systems were named CW–C (HSSF– CW 1 and HSSF–CW 4, non-cultivated, i.e. controls), CW–T (HSSF–CW 2 and HSSF–CW 5, cultivated with Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.)), and CW–A (HSSF–CW 3 and HSSF–CW 6, cultivated with alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides)). The results showed that most of the clogging material was composed of total fixed solids (95, 84, and 82% in CW–C, CW–T, and CW–A, respectively). However, total volatile...

HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY VARIABILITY IN HORIZONTAL SUBSURFACE FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS REA
Baptestini,Gheila C. F.; Matos,Antonio T.; Martinez,Mauro A.; Borges,Alisson C.; Matos,Mateus P..
ABSTRACT Many modifications in hydrodynamic conditions occur inside the bed of a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF–CW) in operation. Studies on hydraulic conductivity measurement techniques in HSSF–CW are imperative since the monitoring of flow conditions is essential for understanding and controlling its clogging. This study aimed to assess the hydrodynamic behavior in HSSF–CW by means of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) analysis. For this, six HSSF–CW were used: two non-cultivated (control), two cultivated with Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.), and two cultivated with alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides). Application of swine wastewater (SW) in HSSF–CW started on June 15, 2011, with Ks measurement period between September 9 and...

Performance evaluation of hydrocyclone filter for microirrigation REA
Mailapalli,Damodhara R .; Marques,Patricia A. A.; Thomas,Kochukaleepkal J..
In this study a hydrocyclone filter of 20 cm was selected and its performance was evaluated by studying the variation of discharge, pressure drop, influent concentration, and filtration efficiency with elapsed time of operation. The filter was tested with clean water to determine clean pressure drop and later it was tested with four concentrations of solid suspension, viz. 300; 600; 900 and 1,200 mg L-1. In the concentration of 300 mg L-1, the variation of pressure drop was low. But for the other concentrations of solid suspension, the variation was significant. The maximum pressure drops obtained were 41.19, 45.11, 50.01 and 52.95 kPa at 350, 390, 280 and 190 minutes of elapsed time, respectively. The maximum efficiency of solid suspension was 30.3,...

Performance of pressure-compensating emitters using treated sewage effluent for irrigation AGRIAMBI
Fischer Filho,João A.; Oliveira,Vinicius M. R. de; Dalri,Alexandre B.; Zanini,José R..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the flow variation of pressure-compensating emitters using treated sewage effluent (TSE). A drip irrigation system with four types of pressure-compensating emitters (G1 - Naan Dan Jain Model Top Drip, G2 - Naan Dan Jain Model Naan PC, G3 - Drip-Plan, G4 - Naan Dan Jain Model Naan Amnon) was installed with TSE from the sewage treatment station, filtered through a disc filter (120 mesh). Seven evaluations of flow rate of the drippers were performed (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 h of operation) operating at 100 kPa. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 4 x 7 factorial arrangement (4 models and 7 times) with four replicates and Tukey test to compare the means. The relative flow rate (Qr), flow rate...

Flow rate dynamics of pressure-compensating drippers under clogging effect AGRIAMBI
Pinto,Marinaldo F.; Molle,Bruno; Alves,Dinara G.; Ait-Mouheb,Nassim; Camargo,Antonio P. de; Frizzone,José A..
ABSTRACT The clogging dynamics of pressure-compensating drippers is still poorly addressed, and its understanding is quite important to control clogging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the flow performance of pressure-compensating drippers under clogging effect. Eight pressure-compensating emitters, model J-SC Jain PC-PLUS with nominal flow rate of 2.2 L h-1 were evaluated. The tests were run for 8 h d-1 for 4 weeks, a total of 160 h. Every 40 h, the concentration and granulometry of suspended particles were increased, by adding 125 mg L-1 of solids, composed of sand. The flow rate of the emitters was determined using a weight measurement system. Flow rate variations of the emitters did not follow a defined pattern. Clogging seems to occur randomly...

Non-pressure compensating emitters using treated sewage effluent for irrigation Ciência Rural
Fischer Filho,João Alberto; Dalri,Alexandre Barcellos; Santos,Miquéias Gomes dos; Zanini,José Renato; Faria,Rogério Teixeira de.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the obstruction of non-pressure compensating emitters using treated sewage effluent (TSE) for irrigation. A drip irrigation system with six models of emitters (encoded) was installed in level field conditions. TSE coming from a sewage treatment station was used as irrigation water after being filtered through a disc filter (120 mesh). Seven flow rate evaluations of drippers operating at 100kPa were performed (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600h of operation). The experimental design was randomized in a 6×7 factorial arrangement (6 models and 7 times), with four repetitions, and Tukey’s test was used to compare means. Relative flow rate (Qr), the flow rate coefficient of variation (CVQ) and degree of clogging (GE) were...
