Disentangling structural patterns of natural forest fragments in a savanna matrix in the eastern Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
AMARAL,Iêda Leão do; MAGNUSSON,William Ernest; MATOS,Francisca Dionízia de Almeida; ALBERNAZ,Ana Luisa K.; FEITOSA,Yuri Oliveira; GUILLAUMET,Jean-Louis.
ABSTRACT Natural fragments are an important source of richness for the management and conservation of a local flora. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of fragmentation on the structure and composition of the plant communities of forest fragments (FF) in Alter do Chão, eastern Brazilian Amazonia. The study sample consisted of 25 FF and nine continuous forest (CF) sites. We compared plant density and species richness between site categories by t-tests, analyzed the differences in composition by cluster analysis, and assessed the effect of fragment size and distance to CF on the basal area and diameter of FF assemblages by linear regression. Individual trees and shrubs with DBH ≥1.27 cm were measured in 2x250 m plots. 17,078 individuals...

Ribeiro,Tiago Maciel; Ivanauskas,Natália Macedo; Martins,Sebastião Venâncio; Polisel,Rodrigo Trassi; Santos,Rochelle Lima Ramos dos; Miranda Neto,Aurino.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the floristic composition, richness, and diversity of the upper and lower strata of a stretch of mixed rain forest near the city of Itaberá, in southeastern Brazil. We also investigated the differences between this conservation area and other stretches of mixed rain forest in southern and southeastern Brazil, as well as other nearby forest formations, in terms of their floristic relationships. For our survey of the upper stratum (diameter at breast height [DBH] > 15 cm), we established 50 permanent plots of 10 × 20 m. Within each of those plots, we designated five, randomly located, 1 × 1 m subplots, in order to survey the lower stratum (total height > 30 cm and DBH < 15 cm). In the upper stratum, we...

Ramos, Helaine Christine Cancela; Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense; Pereira, Messias Gonzaga; Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro; Gonçalves, Leandro Simões Azeredo; Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense; Amaral Júnior, Antonio Teixeira do; Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense; Scapim, Carlos Alberto; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
This study aimed to compare multiallelic distances to quantify genetic diversity in papaya. We evaluated forty-three individuals in the S2 generation, from the backcross between F1 (Cariflora x SS783) and Cariflora, and four accessions from the UENF/Caliman Germplasm Bank. Genetic distances used were Smouse and Peakall (1999), Kosman and Leonard (2005) and weighted index. Clustering among genotypes was performed using the hierarchical unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean analysis (UPGMA) and projection of the distance on the bidimensional plan. A high correlation between genetic distances was observed; however, through UPGMA group analysis, the distance determined by the weighted index provided the complete separation of 52BC1S2-08, 52BC1S2-29...

How the calving order of cows affects the performance of Nellore calves Animal Sciences
Silveira, Rafael Kill; Jangarelli, Marcelo.
This study aimed to verify the effect of age of dam on the performance of male and female Nellore calves, using the following variables: average daily gain (ADG), adjusted weight for 205 days of age (W205), and number of days to reach 160 kg (D160). Information were collected from a commercial herd consisting of 1,122 calves and 1,009 heifers and their mothers. To classify animals with similar performance based on the cows’ calving orders (age of dam), the multivariate cluster analysis was adopted through the complete linkage hierarchical method. The best performance was observed in the calves of cows in their sixth calving at most; for heifers, the best performance was seen in those born to cows in their eighth calving at most. Cows in their eighth...

Genetic diversity, population structure and AFLP markers associated with maize reaction to southern rust Bragantia
Giordani,Willian; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Ruas,Paulo Maurício; Ruas,Claudete de Fátima; Contreras-Soto,Rodrigo; Coan,Marlon; Fonseca,Inês Cristina de Batista; Gonçalves,Leandro Simões Azeredo.
ABSTRACT Maize is one of the species with greater genetic diversity among cereals and possibly the most diverse crop species known. Accessing this variability is essential for maize breeding, allowing breeders to achieve progress of yield increasing, overcome environmental challenges or deal with pests and diseases. Among the maize diseases, southern rust is one of the most important, causing significant losses in yield and presenting severe epidemics worldwide. In the present study, the AFLP technique was applied to analyze population structure and genetic diversity among 145 tropical maize inbred lines, and to test for preliminary evidence of association between AFLP markers and the reaction to southern rust. Disease severity was evaluated in two crop...

Evaluation of Genetic Diversity amongthe Pakistani Wheat (Triticumaestivum L.) Lines through Random Molecular Markers BABT
Zeshan,Ali; Afzal,Muhammad; Alghamdi,Salem S.; Kettener,Karien; Ali,Mubashar; Mubushar,Muhammad; Ahmad,Shakeel.
ABSTRACT The presence of geneticdiversity is of great importance in improving wheat traits and developing strategies for optimal conservation of germplasm. Genetic diversity was assessed among common wheat cultivars using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers at the Center of Agriculture, Biochemistry and Biotechnology (CABB), University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. RAPD primers were used among 14 Pakistani wheat cultivars, to screen the progenies and for the identification of the genes of interest. The polymorphic information content (PIC), was measured as the percentage of polymorphic fragments for all primers. A total of 583 bands(84% polymorphic) in all 14 wheat cultivars was amplified and discriminated all the wheat genotypes. The number of...

Leopoldo,A.S.; Lima-Leopoldo,A.P.; Nascimento,A.F.; Luvizotto,R.A.M.; Sugizaki,M.M.; Campos,D.H.S.; da Silva,D.C.T.; Padovani,C.R.; Cicogna,A.C..
In experimental studies, several parameters, such as body weight, body mass index, adiposity index, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, have commonly been used to demonstrate increased adiposity and investigate the mechanisms underlying obesity and sedentary lifestyles. However, these investigations have not classified the degree of adiposity nor defined adiposity categories for rats, such as normal, overweight, and obese. The aim of the study was to characterize the degree of adiposity in rats fed a high-fat diet using cluster analysis and to create adiposity intervals in an experimental model of obesity. Thirty-day-old male Wistar rats were fed a normal (n=41) or a high-fat (n=43) diet for 15 weeks. Obesity was defined based on the adiposity index; and...

Rhizobial characterization in revegetated areas after bauxite mining BJM
Borges,Wardsson Lustrino; Prin,Yves; Ducousso,Marc; Le Roux,Christine; Faria,Sergio Miana de.
Abstract Little is known regarding how the increased diversity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria contributes to the productivity and diversity of plants in complex communities. However, some authors have shown that the presence of a diverse group of nodulating bacteria is required for different plant species to coexist. A better understanding of the plant symbiotic organism diversity role in natural ecosystems can be extremely useful to define recovery strategies of environments that were degraded by human activities. This study used ARDRA, BOX-PCR fingerprinting and sequencing of the 16S rDNA gene to assess the diversity of root nodule nitrogen-fixing bacteria in former bauxite mining areas that were replanted in 1981, 1985, 1993, 1998, 2004 and 2006 and in a...

Typing Candida albicans oral isolates from healthy Brazilian schoolchildren using multilocus enzyme electrophoresis reveals two highly polymorphic taxa BJM
Boriollo,Marcelo Fabiano Gomes; Spolidorio,Denise Madalena Palomari; Barros,Letizia Monteiro; Bassi,Rodrigo Carlos; Garcia,José Antonio Dias; Costa,Ana Maria Duarte Dias; Rosa,Edvaldo Antonio Ribeiro; Höfling,José Francisco.
The genetic diversity of C. albicans oral isolates from 75 healthy schoolchildren from eight schools located in different geographic areas of Piracicaba city, São Paulo state, Brazil, was established using isoenzymes marker (Multilocus Enzyme Electrophoresis - MLEE) and cluster analysis. Patterns of monoclonal and polyclonal oral colonization by C. albicans within and between groups of schoolchildren were identified. However, significant divergence between the observed and the expected genotypic frequencies (Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium test) was not detected in the geographically adjacent groups, suggesting the hypothesis that populations of healthy schoolchildren do not correspond to the selection factor (differential survival) of strains. Two highly...
