Jany, Cassandre; Zebracki, Mathilde.
METROC program (part of the MEDICIS program about study and fate of the chemical contamination in Western Mediterranean Sea) focuses on sources and wastes issued by large metropolis, with the agglomeration of Marseille as a pilot site. This report presents the results of a sampling campaign in rivers and urban discharges in Marseille and on different types of contaminants (metals, PAH, PCB and PBDE) in dissolved and particulate phases, in dry and rain periods. Results show that concentrations of pollutants are greater in Aygalades river (metals and organic contaminants) and in Emissaire 2, sewer overflows and torrents. From the results of the analysis and discharge given by the DEA, we estimated partially the flows of pollutants which show that the first...

Thebaud, Olivier.
This report presents, in two parts, the results of a study carried out on the coast of Martinique, during 1993. The first part presents the evolution of perceptions and uses of coastal areas, linked to the socio-economic transformations of the island. Completing this presentation, based on the analysis of management plans from different periods, an overview of the recent state of occupation of coastal areas in Martinique is also given. The second part presents four case studies of conflictual situations concerning access to coastal areas, on l and and at sea, considering differents types of activities and decision-making processes. For each case study, an investigation has been conducted to identify implied actors, their motivations and strategies, as well...

Michel, Charlotte.
The Baie de Somme is an infilling estuarine environment, controlled by intensive marine hydrodynamics forcing (megatidal tide and waves) and a small river flow. Morpho-sedimentary dynamics of this bay and sedimentary fluxes were studied at two spatial and temporal scales. I) At the scale of intertidal hydraulic dunes, studied during semi-diurnal and semi-lunar tidal cycles with neap tides (NT) and spring tides (ST). In this context, a strong forcing variability (winds, tide, waves) control sedimentary fluxes and morphodynamics evolutions of dunes (λ : 5-23 m ; H : 20-60 cm). These fluxes generally increase with tide and waves, inducing a net sediment transport to the east or west, according to the predominance of current (flood/ebb), which depends on the...

Saffache, P.
The progradation of the shores of the Gallon Bay (Martinique) has been measured based on diachronic mapping analysis. The sedimentary volume which accumulates along the coast and in the bay (under the water surface) is unknown. Erodibility has been surveyed on a square meter scale and extrapolated to the watersheds. The results show that most sediments originate from the farmed surfaces, they are then entrained by the runoff and the Gallon river and deposited along the coast, where the bathymetry and currentology of the bay facilitate sediment retention. The harmful effects of anthropogenic influence in the area are discussed.

Chemmam Abdelkader, B.; Kraiem, M.M.; El Abed, A..

Coastal planning in North Shore City, New Zealand: Developing responsible coastal erosion policy AgEcon
Wilson, Amanda.
North Shore City’s coastline has been subject to intensive development pressure over the last 15 years. In this time, new developments have established along previously undeveloped areas of coastline and existing sites have redeveloped with much larger houses. This paper provides a description of the planning controls that currently affect coastal development and an assessment of the effectiveness of these controls. This is followed by an analysis of the role of local government in controlling future development. Contention arises when attempts are made to control the property rights of landowners to protect their properties from coastal erosion. The impacts of private coastal protection works on the coastline have wider impacts than their immediate...
