Apports des données de la 'couleur de l'eau' à la modélisation couplée physique-biogéochimie en milieu dynamique côtier : Application au Rio de la Plata et au Golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Huret, Martin.
Continental margins play a crucial role in biogeochemical fluxes between the continents and the open ocean. They are also highly sensitive to human perturbations. Primary production is highly dependent on the complex dynamics of these coastal zones, and on the river supply in nutrients, as well as in Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) which limit light availability. The quantification of the production is a prerequisite in many applications, from the understanding of the role of the coastal ocean in climate change, to eutrophication and fisheries resources issues within the frame of the integrated management of the coastal zone. Coupled physical-biogeochemical models are useful in studying and monitoring primary production. Because of the numerous complex...

The demersal fish assemblage of the coastal area adjacent to the Tagus estuary (Portugal): relationships with environmental conditions ArchiMer
Prista, N; Vasconcelos, Rp; Costa, Mj; Cabral, H.
The subtidal fish assemblage of Tagus estuary coastal area was sampled in order to infer about its relationship to environmental conditions and its possible nursery function for marine species. Fish sampling took place between May 2001 and February 2002 with an otter trawl. In addition to fish sampling, a physical, chemical and biological characterization of the water column and bottom sediment was performed. Density and biomass were determined and ecological and feeding guilds assigned to each fish species. Correspondence analysis (CA) was used to determine the spatio-temporal structure of the assemblage and its correlation to environmental variables. A total of 36 fish species were identified. The fish assemblage was dominated by few species, both in...

Sources and exchanges of mercury in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; De Madron, Xavier Durrieu; Schafer, Jorg; Guedron, Stephane; Marusczak, Nicolas; Castelle, Sabine; Naudin, Jean-jacques.
Ocean margins are focal regions in terms of mercury (Hg) exchanges between the continent and the open sea. The aim of this paper is to describe the distribution and partition of Hg between the gaseous, dissolved and particulate phases in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean (NWM) margin, in order to assess the Hg sources and exchanges within the continuum between the continental shelf (Gulf of Lions) and the open sea (Northern Gyre). Mean (± standard deviation) of total Hg species (HgT) concentrations in unfiltered water samples were 1.52 ± 1.00 pmol L-1 (n=36) in the inner shelf, 1.09 ± 0.15 pmol L-1 (n=30) along the slope, and 1.10 ± 0.13 pmol L-1 (n=99) in the Northern Gyre. The dissolved phase (<0.45µm) average concentrations were 0.80 ±...

Fecal contamination in coastal areas: An engineering approach ArchiMer
Pommepuy, Monique; Hervio Heath, Dominique; Caprais, Marie-paule; Gourmelon, Michele; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Le Guyader, Soizick.
Introduction : "The occurrence of pathogenic microorganisms in seawater or in shellfish could exist anytime sewage from human or animal origin would be discharged to the coast" (Metcalf, 1982). According to the diseases occurring in the human population or in animals, pathogens might be present in recreational waters or in shellfish. Thus, the presence of human enteric viruses (norovirus, astrovirus, rotavirus, hepatitisAvirus (HAV)) and pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, etc.) has been reported in coastal areas for a long time (Colwell, 1978; Metcalf, 1978; Melnick et al., 1979; Grimes, 1991; Bosch et al., 2001;Kong et al., 2002). These...

Le développement durable : un défi pour l'aquaculture marine en Méditerranée ArchiMer
Rey Valette, H; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Rene, Francois; Lazard, J; Syndhia, M; Chia, E.
Mediterranean aquaculture production has increased extensively over the past 10 years (25% per year) and now constitutes a credible alternative to fishing. It now has to take the concepts of sustainability into account, placing it in a very challenging and competitive context. The current question is to know whether aquaculture companies can face up to this challenge and what the consequences will be. in order to answer this question, several surveys were carried out in the Mediterranean. They aimed at i) establishing a typology of companies based on their developmental logic, management practices and constraints; and ii) collecting information on the main stakeholders' feelings about sustainable development. These studies confirm that while such companies...

The open sea as the main source of methylmercury in the water column of the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean margin) ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; De Madron, Xavier Durrieu; Schafer, Jorg; Lanceleur, Laurent; Guedron, Stephane; Buscail, Roselyne; Thomas, Bastien; Castelle, Sabine; Naudin, Jean-jacques.
Despite the ecologic and economical importance of coastal areas, the neurotoxic bioaccumulable monomethylmercury (MMHg) fluxes within the ocean margins and exchanges with the open sea remain unassessed. The aim of this paper is to address the questions of the abundance, distribution, production and exchanges of methylated mercury species (MeHgT), including MMHg and dimethylmercury (DMHg), in the waters, atmosphere and sediments of the Northwestern Mediterranean margin including the Rhône River delta, the continental shelf and its slope (Gulf of Lions) and the adjacent open sea (North Gyre). Concentrations of MeHgT ranged from <0.02 to 0.48 pmol L−1 with highest values associated with the oxygen-deficient zone of the open sea. The methylated mercury to...

Simulated conservative tracer as a proxy for S-metolachlor concentration predictions compared to POCIS measurements in Arcachon Bay ArchiMer
Fauvelle, Vincent; Belles, Angel; Budzinski, Helene; Mazzella, Nicolas; Plus, Martin.
The work presented here aims at comparing monitoring of S-metolachlor, the major pesticide in use in the Arcachon Bay (South West of France, transitional coastal area), by chemical analysis (monthly passive sampling) and contaminant dissipation modeling from sources (Mars-2D model). The global strategy consisted in i) identifying the major sources of S-metolachlor to the Bay, ii) monitoring these sources for 12 months, and iii) comparing modeled data in the Bay based on measured inputs, to chemical measurements made inside the Bay along with the 12-month source monitoring. Results first showed that the major S-metolachlor surface inputs to the Arcachon Bay are mainly from one single source. Modeled and measured data were in good agreement at 5 sites in the...

Indian Ocean Coastal Communities: Sculpting a Vision for the 21st Century OceanDocs
Maniku, M.H..
Over the second half of the last century, the political and economic changes, which have occurred within the Indian Ocean Region, have drawn international attention to the emerging potential within the region. Indian Ocean Region is quite unique in many ways; it is a tropical ocean, with a multitude of ancient cultures, political structures and both complementary and competing economies. This recently realized potential would offer the Indian Ocean coastal states, international parties and western countries a multiplicity of opportunities to develop close links and bilateral trade relations within and outside the region....

Eastern Africa Coastal Forest Programme OceanDocs
Younge, A..
The eastern African coastal forest ecoregion is recognised as one of Africa’s centres of species endemism, and is distributed over six countries (Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi). Most is found in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, which form our focal region. The coastal forests are fragmented, small and surrounded by poor communities that have a high demand for land and forest resources. Although coastal forests have significant cultural and traditional values for local communities, they do not receive adequate support from the relevant government authorities and international conservation institutions. WWF has over 10 years research and conservation experience on the eastern Africa coastal forests in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique...

Spatial partition of artificial structures by fish at the surroundings of the conservation unit - Parque Estadual da Ilha Anchieta, SP, Brazil BABT
Cunningham,Patricia Teresa Monteiro; Saul,Andreia de Carvalho.
The aim of this work was to study the spatial partition dynamics of fish at artificial structures. Holed structured concrete blocks were used to construct eight identical artificial structures and disposed between 3m-6m depths. Installation was made in two steps during 1996 (May/June and November/December) and daily observations were carried out during 30 consecutive days SCUBA diving. The artificial reef areas were used in discriminated ways by the fish community and was most probably influenced by several factor, mainly biotic. The results of the Krustal-Wallis test led to the refutation of the hypothesis that the artificial structure spaces were shared and randomly used by fish.
