Spatio-temporal variation of the pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Crustacea, Decapoda, Penaeidae) associated to the seasonal overture of the sandbar in a subtropical lagoon Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ferreira,Nicolle C; Freire,Andrea S.
On the southern Brazilian coast, the penaeid pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) is intensively captured by both artisanal and industrial fisheries. In the Ibiraquera Lagoon, artisanal fishing of juvenile stocks has declined sharply over the last 15 years. The traditional management methods used by fishermen are no longer sustainable due to conflicts with the demands of tourism and weak environmental and public agencies. The dynamics of the timing of the artificial opening and natural reformation of a sandbar across the mouth of the lagoon are regarded as a central socio-ecological problem. We evaluated the abundance and biomass variation of F. paulensis throughout the year and along a spatial gradient measured from the sandbar...

Re-oligotrophication trajectories of macrophyte assemblages in Mediterranean coastal lagoons based on 17-year time-series ArchiMer
Le Fur, Ines; De Wit, Rutger; Plus, Martin; Oheix, Jocelyne; Derolez, Valerie; Simier, Monique; Malet, Nathalie; Ouisse, Vincent.
Since the mid-20th century, Mediterranean lagoons have been affected by eutrophication, leading to significant changes in primary producers. In the early 2000s, management actions have been implemented to reduce nutrient inputs with the aim to achieve a good ecological status as requested by the EU water framework directive. As a result of these actions, a sharp decline in nutrient loads has been recorded in several lagoons leading to an oligotrophication of the water column. The analyses of a long-term data set (1998-2015) of 21 polyhaline and euhaline lagoons with contrasting trophic status allowed us to infer a general scheme for the changes in macrophyte assemblages during the oligotrophication process. Placing hypertrophic and oligotrophic conditions...

Specific regulations of gill membrane fatty acids in response to environmental variability reveal fitness differences between two suspension-feeding bivalves (Nodipecten subnodosus and Spondylus crassisquama) ArchiMer
Mathieu-resuge, Margaux; Le Grand, Fabienne; Schaal, Gauthier; Lluch-cota, Salvador E; Racotta, Ilie S; Kraffe, Edouard; Todgham, Anne.
Bivalves’ physiological functions (i.e. growth, reproduction) are influenced by environmental variability that can be concomitant with trophic resource variations in terms of quality and quantity. Among the essential molecules that bivalves need to acquire from their diet to maintain physiological functions, fatty acids (FAs) such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (e.g. 20:4n-6 (arachidonic acid), 20:5n-3 (eicosapentaenoic acid) and 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid)) have been described to play a critical role. The present study examined the FA composition of gill membrane lipids of two bivalve species, Nodipecten subnodosus and Spondylus crassisquama, sampled in a coastal lagoon of the Northeastern Pacific (Ojo de Liebre, Mexico), at two contrasting locations...

Spatial heterogeneity in the distribution of plants and benthic invertebrates in the lagoon of Orbetello (Italy) ArchiMer
De Biasi, Am; Benedetti-cecchi, L; Pacciardi, L; Maggi, E; Vaselli, S; Bertocci, I.
Many studies in marine coastal lagoons have focused on the marine-to-terrestrial gradient as a main source of variation for the structure of assemblages. In this paper, the magnitude of differences among locations arranged along the marine-to-terrestrial gradient of the western lagoon of Orbetello (Grosseto, Italy) was contrasted with the amount of spatial variability occurring among sets of locations that were not positioned along this axis. We propose that if the most important processes influencing assemblages were those associated with the external-internal gradient of the lagoon, as usually supposed, then assemblages should differ more among these locations than among any other locations. To test the above proposition, four locations arranged along...

Restoration ecology of coastal lagoons: new methods for the prediction of ecological trajectories and economic valuation ArchiMer
De Wit, Rutger; Rey-valette, Helene; Balavoine, Juliette; Ouisse, Vincent; Lifran, Robert.
Conservation of the seven lagoons of the Palavas complex (southern France) has been severely impaired by nutrient over-enrichment during at least four decades. The effluents of the Montpellier wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) represented the main nutrient input. To improve the water quality of these lagoons, this WWTP was renovated and upgraded and, since the end of 2005, its effluents have been discharged 11 km offshore into the Mediterranean (total investment €150 M). Possibilities of ecosystem restoration as part of a conservation programme were explored by a focus group of experts. Their tasks were: (i) to evaluate the impact of the reduction of the nutrient input; (ii) if necessary, to design additional measures for an active restoration programme;...

Accumulation des sels nutritifs dans un sédiment lagunaire et environnement hydrodynamique ArchiMer
Gomez, E; Millet, B; Picot, B.
The Mejean-Perols Lagoon is situated on the French Mediterranean coast. It is a small (747 ha) and shallow (70 cm) lagoon. Some treated effluent from Montpellier flows into this hypereutrophic lagoon. The cartography of C, N and P concentrations in the sediment was studied based on 35 bottom samples. The nitrogen and organic carbon concentrations were more or less homogeneous, the highest concentrations being found in the middle of the lagoon. The phosphate was principally bound onto the sediment in the west zone. The observed distribution was independent of grain size, the distribution of which was rather homogeneous. In this lagoon water circulation is wind induced. Four different water flow structures were observed, as functions of the prevailing winds...

Field investigations and multi-indicators for shallow water lagoon management: perspective for societal benefit ArchiMer
Brehmer, Patrice; Thang Do Chi,; Laugier, Thierry; Galgani, Francois; Laloe, Francis; Darnaude, Audrey M.; Fiandrino, Annie; Mouillot, David.
1. Abiotic and biotic variables of coastal lagoons are highly heterogeneous in both space and time, and this heterogeneity complicates the assessment of their ecological status. These variables are essential to the monitoring and preservation of these fragile ecotones and the resources and services they sustain. 2. An integrative approach for evaluating the ecological status of coastal lagoons, based on field investigations of the key parameters driving their functioning and a set of selected ecological indicators matching lagoon management information needs for societal benefits, is investigated. Consistency in lagoon status evaluation from multiple and different variables was estimated, through a case study comparing three adjacent yet contrasting French...

Écologie de la reproduction de l’huître Crassostrea gigas en lagune méditerranéenne ArchiMer
Lagarde, Franck.
The Mediterranean lagoons host many anthropogenic uses including shellfish aquaculture since the beginning of the 20th century. Imported in 1970, the cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas, has adapted perfectly and has allowed an important development of oyster’s industry until 2008, the year of occurence of spat outbreak related to the emergence of an Ostreid Herpes-virus μvar. The scarcity of spat and the speculation on this product changed regionally cultural practices and the supply of juveniles, with in particular the wish of developing a local activity of spat collection. However the cycle of reproduction of the species and the recruitment of juveniles were poorly known in lagoon environments. In this context, the objective of this thesis is to...

Seventy-year chronology of Salinas in southern France: coastal surfaces managed for salt production and conservation issues for abandoned sites ArchiMer
De Wit, Rutger; Vincent, Alice; Foulc, Ludovic; Klesczewski, Mario; Scher, Olivier; Loste, Claudine; Thibault, Marc; Poulin, Brigitte; Ernoul, Lisa; Boutron, Olivier.
After World War II, twenty-nine coastal Salinas (122 km2), located in the vicinity of coastal lagoons and in deltas, were exploited along the Mediterranean coastlines in South France. Today, only five of these are still actively producing salt, currently representing 175 km2. Concomitant with the abandonment of many of the smaller Salinas, the larger Salinas in the Rhône delta (Camargue) strongly increased their surfaces at the expense of natural ecosystems, of which a part has also been abandoned after 2009. This paper documents these changes in landscape use by chronological GIS mapping and describes the fate of the 91 km2 of abandoned Salina surfaces. The majority of this area (88 km2) is included in the Natura 2000 network, among which most (74 km2)...

Eléments nutritifs limitant la biomasse phytoplanctonique d'une lagune tropicale de Côte d'Ivoire. Comparaison des méthodes d'estimation ArchiMer
Dufour, P.; Cremoux, Jl.; Slepoukha, M..
"In vitro" enrichment experiments on natural populations have been used to determine the nutrients controlling the potential biomass of phytoplancton in the Ebrié coastal lagoon. The limiting nutrients were generally nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon, in this order ; in three cases out of eleven, P and N act simultaneously ; in an extreme eutrophication case, N, P and C were all limiting. No effect was observed following addition of metals, vitamins or chelators. The limitations deduced from the enrichment experiments show a. good agreement with the elementary composition of the external medium ; in waters potentially limited by N alone, the dissolved inorganic nutrients have a N : P ratio lower than 25. The agreement is poorer when the sestonic N : P ratio...

Duality of trophic supply and hydrodynamic connectivity drives spatial patterns of Pacific oyster recruitment ArchiMer
Lagarde, Franck; Fiandrino, Annie; Ubertini, Martin; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Mortreux, Serge; Chiantella, Claude; Bec, Beatrice; Bonnet, Delphine; Roques, Cécile; Bernard, Ismael; Richard, Marion; Guyondet, Thomas; Pouvreau, Stephane; Lett, Christophe.
The recent discovery of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (also known as Magallana gigas) spatfields in a Mediterranean lagoon intensely exploited for shellfish farming (Thau lagoon) revealed significant contrasts in spatial patterns of recruitment. We evaluated the processes that drive spatial patterns in oyster recruitment by comparing observed recruitment, simulated hydrodynamic connectivity and ecological variables. We hypothesized that spatial variability of recruitment depends on (1) hydrodynamic connectivity and (2) the ecology of the larval supply, settlement, metamorphosis, survival and biotic environmental parameters. We assessed recruitment at 6-8 experimental sites by larval sampling and spat collection inside and outside oyster farming areas...

Phytoplankton seasonal dynamics in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon: emphasis on the picoeukaryote community ArchiMer
Bec, Béatrice; Husseini Ratrema, Julie; Collos, Yves; Souchu, Philippe; Vaquer, André.
The dynamics of the phytoplankton community were investigated in a marine coastal lagoon (Thau, NW Mediterranean) from February 1999 to January 2000. Dilution experiments, chlorophyll a (Chl a) size-fractionation and primary production measurements were conducted monthly. Maximum growth and microzooplankton grazing rates were estimated from Chl a biomass fractions to separate pico- from nano- and microphytoplankton and by flow cytometry to distinguish between picoeukaryotes and picocyanobacteria. In spring, the phytoplankton community was dominated by Chaetoceros sp. and Skeletonema costatum, which represented most of biomass (B) and primary production (P). Nano- and microphytoplankton growth was controlled by nutrient availability and exceeded losses due...

Modelling ecological change over half a century in a subtropical estuary: impacts of climate change, land-use, urbanization and freshwater extraction ArchiMer
Condie, Scott A.; Hayes, Donna; Fulton, Elizabeth A.; Savina, Marie.
The Clarence River Estuary is the largest estuary in southeast Australia, with an extensive floodplain encompassing multiple river channels and a large coastal lagoon. It is the focus of major commercial and recreational fisheries and there is pressure to divert its freshwater inputs for agricultural and domestic uses. We used a spatial biogeochemical model to simulate the variability and evolution of this system on timescales from days to decades over the past half century. Like most tropical and subtropical estuaries, the Clarence River Estuary is strongly influenced by river discharge, sediment and nutrient loads. Given the high nutrient loads arriving from the upper catchment, plankton biomasses in the model were typically limited by flushing through...

An Unstructured Numerical Model to Study Wind-Driven Circulation Patterns in a Managed Coastal Mediterranean Wetland: The Vaccares Lagoon System ArchiMer
Boutron, Olivier; Bertrand, Olivier; Fiandrino, Annie; Hoehener, Patrick; Sandoz, Alain; Cherain, Yves; Coulet, Eric; Chauvelon, Philippe.
The spatiotemporal structure of wind-driven circulation patterns and associated water exchanges can drive important bio-hydrodynamic interactions in shallow lagoons. The Vaccares lagoon system is a complex shallow hydrosystem located in the central part of the Rhone Delta (France). It is internationally recognized as part of a biosphere reserve within the framework of UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Programme, and as a RAMSAR site. Due to its frequent occurrence in this area, and considering the shallowness of the Vaccares lagoon system, wind is assumed to play a major role in the hydrodynamic and biological processes. In this study, a hydrodynamic model was developed to investigate the structure of wind-driven circulations in the Vaccares lagoon system, to...

Bird diversity and conservation in the southern coast of Santa Catarina state, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Just,João Paulo Gava; Rosoni,Jonas Rafael Rodrigues; Romagna,Rafael Spilere; Zocche,Jairo José.
Abstract Coastal lagoons and their surrounding habitats often harbour high biodiversity and some of the most threatened ecosystems in the world. However, in the Neotropics the biodiversity is often poorly described, lacking even inventories of species which therefore limits the assessment of threats and the stablishment of efficient conservation measures. We present here lists of bird species recorded at ten sites along the under-studied coastal lagoons of southern Santa Catarina, Brazil, collected mainly from October 2012 to March 2018. We present quantitative data for endemic and threatened species, identify migratory status and highlight distributional novelties. In total, we recorded 229 species encompassing 63 families, including twelve species of...

Occurrence of the rare genus Microcrocis P. Richter (Chroococcales, Cyanobacteria) in a coastal lagoon from southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Werner,Vera Regina; Sant’anna,Célia Leite.
The paper records the first occurrence of the genus Microcrocis P. Richter (Chroococcales, Cyanobacteria), represented by M. pulchella (Buell) Geitler, in Brazil. The species was found in two zones, one with freshwater and the other with brackish water, of a coastal lagoon of Rio Grande do Sul State (31°15’-31°30’ S and 50°54’-51°09’ W). Comparison between M. pulchella and its most closely related species is presented. Up to now this species had occurrence records limited to freshwater systems in temperate regions. Its presence in a subtropical coastal lagoon from southernmost Brazil, either in fresh or in brackish water, broadened the knowledge of the distribution area of M. pulchella.

Cyanoaggregatum brasiliense gen. et sp. nov., a new chroococcal Cyanobacteria from Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Werner,Vera Regina; Sant'anna,Célia Leite; Azevedo,Maria Teresa de Paiva.
The paper proposed Cyanoaggregatum brasiliense, a new genus and species from the plankton of a subtropical brackish coastal lagoon from Rio Grande do Sul State, South Brazil. It differs from all other members of Chroococcales by its characteristic arrangement of cells in irregular groups distributed in a single, flat or slightly curved layer, on irregular rows, slightly distant from each other, forming a mosaic-like pattern slightly below the surface of the mucilaginous colonial envelope. The cell division in one plane perpendicular to the long axis and the lack of pseudo-filaments indicate its classification in the family Synechococcaceae, sub-family Aphanothecoideae. The general characteristics, the diagnostic criteria and the taxonomic position are...

Distribution and growth in adults of Macrobrachium acanthurus Wiegmann, (Decapoda, Palaemonidae) in a tropical coastal lagoon, Brazil Zoologia
Albertoni,Edélti Faria; Palma-Silva,Cleber; Esteves,Francisco de Assis.
Macrobrachium acanthurus Wiegmann, 1836 is a Palaemonidae commonly found in Brazilian coastal environments. At Imboassica lagoon, located in the north of the State of Rio de Janeiro, it is found in two stages of its life cycle: as larvae and as reproductive adults. This work had as its goal the evaluation of adults distribution, estimating the weight/length relationship and the condition factor of these adults. After sampling in two regions of the lagoon, one interior and another closer to the ocean, we verified that females are found in a greater proportion close to the ocean, and males are found in greater number in the innermost region, amidst the aquatic macrophytes, suggesting that the fecundation takes place in this last area and the females then...

Use of an estuarine environment (Barra do Saí lagoon, Brazil) as nursery by fish Zoologia
Vendel,Ana L.; Chaves,Paulo de T..
Studies were carried out at the Barra do Saí lagoon, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina State, Brazil, to evaluate the function played by this estuary in the life cycle of fish found at the coastal zone. Samplings were performed using beach seine net from December 2000 to November 2001. The continental influence is strong, as showed by the occurrence of freshwater fishes, although most of the 43 species recorded are marine ones. It was verified that around summer, when the temperature of the water is high, the values of salinity decrease and those of turbidity increase. At this time there is also an increase in the abundance of juvenile fish in the lagoon. Because of its average depth of less than 0.7 m, the lagoon is inhabited primarily by juveniles,...
