Lagoons are highly productive coastal features that provide a range of natural services that society values. Their setting within the coastal landscape leaves them especially vulnerable to profound physical, ecological, and associated societal disturbance from global climate change. Expected shifts in physical and ecological characteristics range from changes in flushing regime, freshwater inputs, and water chemistry to complete inundation and loss and the concomitant loss of natural and human communities. Therefore, managing coastal lagoons in the context of global climate change is critical. Although management approaches will vary depending on local conditions and cultural norms, all management scenarios will need to be nimble and to make full use of...

Spatiotemporal dynamics of submerged macrophyte status and watershed exploitation in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon: Understanding critical factors in ecosystem degradation and restoration ArchiMer
Pasqualini, Vanina; Derolez, Valerie; Garrido, Marie; Orsoni, Valerie; Baldi, Yoann; Etourneau, Sabrina; Leoni, Vanina; Rebillout, Patrick; Laugier, Thierry; Souchu, Philippe; Malet, Nathalie.
Increases in the intensity of disturbances in coastal lagoons can lead to shifts in vegetation from aquatic angiosperms to macroalgal or phytoplankton communities. Such abrupt and discontinuous responses are facilitated by instability in the equilibrium controlling the trajectory of the community response. We hypothesized that the shift in macrophyte populations is reversible, and that this reversibility is dependent on changes in the pressures exerted on the watershed and lagoon functioning. Biguglia lagoon (Mediterranean Sea, Corsica) is an interesting case study for the evaluation of long-term coastal lagoon ecosystem functioning and the trajectory of submerged macrophyte responses to disturbances, to facilitate the appropriate restoration of...

Role des bacteries phototrophes anoxygeniques dans une partie stratifiee d'une lagune tropicale (Lagune Ebrie, Cote d'Ivoire) ArchiMer
Caumette, P.
In the deepest parts of the estuarine region of Ebrie Lagoon (Abidjan Africa, (5 degree N, 4 degree W) stratified conditions have been observed during the rainy season (May to Nov.), owing to salinity differences between oxic and anoxic layers. At the interface, 3-4 m depth, phototrophic bacteria (Chromatium, Chlorobium and Pelodictyon ) developed, forming a brown layer due to their different pigments. Their production has been estimated at 41% of the total photosynthetic production during high stratification (Sep. 1981) and their biomass was used by the copepod population for 40 to 60% of its diet. During the dry season, the water column became homogeneous and oxygen was detected to 6m depth. The brown layer of phototrophic bacteria disappeared, as well...

Benthic microbial loop functioning in coastal lagoons: a comparative approach ArchiMer
Manini, E; Fiordelmondo, C; Gambi, C; Pusceddu, A; Danovaro, R.
Coastal lagoons are highly variable and dynamic systems that have been rarely investigated in terms of benthic microbial loop. We present here the results of a comparative study aimed at investigating factors and benthic processes potentially affecting microbial loop functioning in three lagoon systems (Goro, Lesina and Marsala lagoons). The three lagoons were characterised by different geo-morphological, trophic and ecological features. We determined organic matter quantity and biochemical composition, exo-enzymatic activities, bacterial biomass and bacterial carbon production together with heterotrophic nanoflagellate and meiofauna biomass. These variables allowed providing estimates of biomass ratios between different benthic compartments and gathering...

Metal concentrations in sediment and Nereis diversicolor in two Moroccan lagoons: Khnifiss and Oualidia ArchiMer
Idardare, Zaina; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Moukrim, A; Alla, A; Auger, Dominique; Lefrere, L; Rozuel, Emmanuelle.
Metal concentrations were measured monthly during an annual cycle (December 2004 to January 2006) in the tissues of Nereis diversicolor ragworms and sediment from two Moroccan Atlantic coastal lagoons: Oualidia in the north, situated in a highly industrialised urban area and Khnifiss in the south, far from anthropogenic influences. Relatively high levels of Zn, Ag and Cd were found in the sediment of Oualidia lagoon, while Ni concentrations were shown to be high at Khnifiss. The significant metal levels at Oualidia are a result of industrial and urban discharges, coupled with discharges from adjacent phosphate ore processing plants. Trace metal concentrations in worms vary according to season; they are usually high in winter and spring, in relation to the...

The natural conservation of coastal lagoons is important not only for their ecological importance, but also because of the valuable ecosystem services they provide for human welfare and wellbeing. Coastal lagoons are shallow semi-enclosed systems that support important habitats such as wetlands, mangroves, salt-marshes and seagrass meadows, as well as a rich biodiversity. Coastal lagoons are also complex social-ecological systems and the ecosystem services that lagoons deliver provide livelihoods, benefits wellbeing and welfare to humans. This study assessed, quantified and valued the ecosystem services of 32 coastal lagoons. The main findings of the study were: (i) the definitions of ecosystem services are still not generally accepted; (ii) the...

How does eutrophication impact bundles of ecosystem services in multiple coastal habitats using state-and-transition models ArchiMer

One of the current major scientific challenges to sustain social-ecological systems is to improve our understanding of the spatial and temporal dynamics of the relationships between biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services. Here, we analyse the bundles of ecosystem services supplied by three coastal ecosystems (coastal lagoons, coral reefs and sandy beaches) along a gradient of eutrophication. Based on a state-and-transition model, we analyses the dynamic responses of ecological communities to environmental change and management actions. Although few exceptions are highlighted, increasing eutrophication in the three ecosystem types leads to a degradation of the ecosystem service bundles, particularly for nutrient and pathogen...

Evolution of bacterial communities precipitating carbonate, in Mediterranean lagoons water and sediment: Study on experimental conditions. ArchiMer
Castanier, S; Maurin, A; Bianchi, A.
To determine if carbonate precipitation is an active or passive bacterial phenomena, factorial analysis has been realized with 880 strains isolated from different samples of sea water and muds kept in various conditions of incubation. Results show the existence of a strong anti-correlation between carbonate precipitation and amino-acid ammonification. Carbonate precipitation is not a passive phenomena linked with amino-acid ammonification.

First steps of ecological restoration in Mediterranean lagoons: Shifts in phytoplankton communities ArchiMer
Leruste, A.; Malet, Nathalie; Munaron, Dominique; Derolez, Valerie; Hatey, E.; Collos, Y.; De Wit, R.; Bec, B..
Along the French Mediterranean coast, a complex of eight lagoons underwent intensive eutrophication over four decades, mainly related to nutrient over-enrichment from continuous sewage discharges. The lagoon complex displayed a wide trophic gradient from mesotrophy to hypertrophy and primary production was dominated by phytoplankton communities. In 2005, the implementation of an 11 km offshore outfall system diverted the treated sewage effluents leading to a drastic reduction of anthropogenic inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus into the lagoons. Time series data have been examined from 2000 to 2013 for physical, chemical and biological (phytoplankton) variables of the water column during the summer period. Since 2006, total nitrogen and phosphorus...

Estudiosd bacteriológicos en la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, Colombia OceanDocs
Jeske, R..
