Induced reproduction of dourado (Salminus brasiliensis): fertilization with sperm cryopreserved in ACP®-104 Animal Sciences
Zanandrea, Ana Carolina Volpato; Weingartner, Marcos; Zaniboni-Filho, Evoy.
Experiments were conducted to improve the fertilization rate of cryopreserved semen of dourado, Salminus brasiliensis. The experiment tested two cryoprotectant solutions at different semen: cryoprotectant ratios (1:5, 1:15, 1:25 and 1:50). The standard solution for the species (mixture of dimethyl sulfoxide, glucose, egg yolk and distilled water) was compared to a 350 mOsm ACP®-104 solution, which is composed of powdered coconut water diluted in distilled water and methylglycol. Differences between the dilutions tested were significant only for ACP®. The fertilization potential by using the standard solution at the lowest dilution (1:5) is equated when the sperm is diluted in ACP® at 1:25 or 1:50. These results show that the standard solution is the most...

Geometry dependence of heating in a U-tube heat exchanger for pasteurization CIGR Journal
de la Torre, Jerry James Murillo; Culaba, Alvin B; Martinez, Romualdo C.
A serpentine tube heat exchanger is physically constrained by its bend radius. The U-tube bend section of a tubular heat exchanger is thus interesting broadly in terms of fluid flow and heat transfer. This paper presents the tube size dependence of heating profile of this U-tube as is commonly encountered in the design of pasteurizers. Analytical and computational modeling were employed in investigating the heat capacity, heat flux, heating rate and energy use of a U-tube at increasing diameters 9.52, 12.70, 19.05 and 25.40 mm, each at constant 1 mm thickness. SolidWorks 2016 was used in geometric modeling while Ansys v16 was used for transient thermal computational fluid dynamics simulation of the conduit (SS316L) and the product (coconut water). The...

Reduction of the DNA damages, Hepatoprotective Effect and Antioxidant Potential of the Coconut Water, ascorbic and Caffeic Acids in Oxidative Stress Mediated by Ethanol Anais da ABC (AABC)
BISPO,VANDERSON S.; DANTAS,LUCAS S.; CHAVES FILHO,ADRIANO B.; PINTO,ISABELLA F.D.; SILVA,RAILMARA P. DA; OTSUKA,FELIPE A.M.; SANTOS,RODRIGO B.; SANTOS,ALINE C.; TRINDADE,DANIELLE J.; MATOS,HUMBERTO R..
ABSTRACT Hepatic disorders such as steatosis and alcoholic steatohepatitis are common diseases that affect thousands of people around the globe. This study aims to identify the main phenol compounds using a new HPLC-ESI+-MS/MS method, to evaluate some oxidative stress parameters and the hepatoprotective action of green dwarf coconut water, caffeic and ascorbic acids on the liver and serum of rats treated with ethanol. The results showed five polyphenols in the lyophilized coconut water spiked with standards: chlorogenic acid (0.18 µM), caffeic acid (1.1 µM), methyl caffeate (0.03 µM), quercetin (0.08 µM) and ferulic acid (0.02 µM) isomers. In the animals, the activity of the serum γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (γ-GT) was reduced to 1.8 I.U/L in the coconut...

Short-term preservation of Pecari tajacu ovarian preantral follicles using phosphate buffered saline (PBS) or powdered coconut water (ACP(r)) media Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lima,G.L.; Santos,E.A.A.; Lima,L.F.; Luz,V.B.; Rodrigues,A.P.R.; Silva,A.R..
We compare protocols for the short-term preservation of collared peccarie's ovarian preantral follicles (PFs) by using phosphate buffered saline- (PBS) or powdered coconut water- (ACP(r)) based medium. For morphology analysis each pair of ovaries collected from six females was divided into nine fragments. One fragment was destined for morphology analysis (histology and transmission electron microscopy - TEM), constituting the control group and the other fragments were placed in tubes with PBS or ACP(r), packed in 5 L Styrofoam boxes, stored for 4h, 12h, 24h, and 36h, and then analyzed. For viability analysis a pair of ovaries from two additional females was divided into nine fragments; one fragment was immediately destined for viability analysis (Trypan...

The Effects of Different Media, Sucrose Concentrations and Natural Additives on Plantlet Growth of Phalaenopsis Hybrid 'Pink' BABT
Zahara,Meutia; Datta,Avishek; Boonkorkaew,Patchareeya; Mishra,Abha.
ABSTRACT The effects of various sucrose concentrations as carbon source and natural additives in different media on plantlet growth of Phalaenopsis hybrid 'Pink' were studied. Plantlets were cultured on two media (Murashige and Skoog [MS] and Vacin and Went [VW]) supplemented with 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 g L-1 sucrose either with 0, 10 and 20% (v/v) coconut water (CW) or carrot juice (CJ) as natural additives. After four months of culture, the combination of sucrose and CW supplemented with both media affected plantlet growth where most of the plantlets showed slow growth and survival frequency (0-80%) with increasing concentrations of CW in all sucrose concentrations. However, plantlet growth on both media containing only 20 g L-1 sucrose without CW was...

Preservation of goat preantral follicles in saline or coconut water solution Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Costa,Sonia Helena Furtado; Santos,Regiane Rodrigues dos; Ferreira,Marcos Antônio Leal; Machado,Vanessa Porto; Rodrigues,Ana Paula Ribeiro; Ohashi,Otávio Mitio; Figueiredo,José Ricardo de.
The present study investigated the efficiency of saline solution and coconut water solution in the preservation of goat preantral follicles enclosed in ovarian tissue, at different temperatures and for different incubation periods. At the slaughterhouse, the ovarian pair was divided into 19 fragments; one ovarian fragment was immediately fixed for histology (control-time zero). The other 18 ovarian fragments were preserved in both solutions at 4ºC, 20ºC or 39ºC for 4 h, 12 h or 24 h. The histological analysis showed that the storage of ovarian fragments in both solutions at 4ºC for up to 24 h kept the percentage of normal preantral follicles similar to the control values. In contrast, preservation at 20°C or 39ºC, in either solution, reduced significantly...

Ultrafiltration performance of PVDF, PES, and cellulose membranes for the treatment of coconut water (Cocos nucifera L.) Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Debien,Isabel Cristina do Nascimento; Gomes,Maria Thereza de Moraes Santos; Ongaratto,Ricardo Schmitz; Viotto,Luiz Antonio.
Ultrafiltration (UF) inhibits the enzymatic activity which is responsible for color changes of coconut water without the need for heat treatment. In the present study, UF performance in terms of the permeate flux and enzymatic retention of the coconut water was evaluated at laboratory unit (LU) and pilot unit (PU). The membranes studied were polyethersulfone 150 kDa (UP150), polyvinylidene fluoride 150 kDa (UV150) and cellulose 30 kDa (UC030). The UP150 membrane showed the best permeate flux. The UC030 membrane showed the lowest flux, but it resulted in 100% enzymatic retention, while the other membranes showed enzymatic retentions between 71 and 85%. The application of the UC030 in the pilot unit (PU) resulted in a flux value higher than that obtained in...
