Effects of the Development of Township Enterprises on the Urban-Rural Dual Economic Structure Based on Cointegration Theory AgEcon
Tang, Peng-zhu; Li, Bin.
The gross output value of township enterprises (XGDP) is used as a variable of township enterprises development. And CXEY is a variable of urban-rural dual economic structure. According to the 1986-2006 Statistical Yearbook of Chinese Township Enterprises and the 2006 China Statistical Yearbook, effects of the development of township enterprises on the urban-rural dual economic structure are studied by the cointegration analysis. Result shows that without considering other influencing factors, township enterprise development in the years 1979-2005 is the key factor to improve the dual economic structure in urban and rural areas in China.

A Dynamic Approach to the FDI-Environment Nexus: The Case of China and India AgEcon
Baek, Jungho; Koo, Won W..
The cointegration analysis and a vector error-correction (VEC) model are applied to examine the short- and long-run relationships among foreign direct investment (FDI), economic growth, and the environment in China and India. The results show that FDI inflow plays a pivotal role in determining the short- and long-run movement of economic growth through capital accumulation and technical spillovers in the two countries. However, FDI inflow in both countries is found to have a detrimental effect on environmental quality in both the short- and long-run, supporting pollution haven hypothesis. Finally, it is found that, in the short-run, there exists a unidirectional causality from FDI inflow to economic growth and the environment in China and India - a change...

Agricultural Inter-Sectoral Linkages and Its Contribution to Economic Growth in the Transition Countries AgEcon
Subramaniam, Vijay; Reed, Michael R..
This study estimates an econometric model that incorporates the linkages among agriculture, manufacturing, service and trade sectors using a vector error correction model for Poland and Romania. Three cointegrating vectors for Poland and one for Romania confirm that the different sectors in the Poland and Romania moved together over the sample period, and for this reason, their growth rates are interdependent. The long-run relationship of industrial, service and trade sectors to agricultural sector were established, and the results show that the industrial sector in Poland contributes positively to the agricultural sector while the growing service sector shows mixed results. The results of Romania indicate that the industrial sector is detrimental to...

Local Impacts of a Global Crisis - Food Price Transmission and Poverty Impacts in Ghana AgEcon
Cudjoe, Godsway; Breisinger, Clemens; Diao, Xinshen.
This paper takes a local perspective on global food price shocks by analyzing food price transmission between regional markets in Ghana. It also assesses the impacts of food price increases on various household groups. Taking the recent global food crisis as an example, we find that prices for domestic staples are highly correlated with prices for imported rice. However, price transmission between pairs of domestic regional markets is limited; it is complete for local rice and maize only when more rigorous cointegration analysis is applied. Our findings also show the important role of seasonality in the determination of market integration and price transmission. The welfare effect for households as consumers appears relatively modest at the aggregate...

Exchange Rate Sensitivity of Mexican Maize Imports from the United States AgEcon
Sarker, Rakhal; Jaramillo-Villanueva, Jose Luis.
Since the implementation of NAFTA in 1994 agri-food trade between Mexico and the United States grew substantially. While some analysts argue that NAFTA has contributed the most, others have emphasized the role played by exchange rate in this process. An attempt is made in this paper to address this issue by determining the extent to which NAFTA, expansion of the livestock sector, exchange rate and exchange rate variability have contributed to the expansion of Mexican maize imports from the United States from January 1989 to December 2004.

Market integration for Chilean wheat prices using Vector Error Correction Models (VECM), a cointegration analysis: análisis de cointegración Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Valdes,Rodrigo; von Cramon-Taubadel,Stephan; Díaz,José.
Historically Chile has been a wheat net importer country. This situation, added to the small size of its economy, causes that the domestic price of this cereal is highly influenced by import prices of substitute wheat. This research analyzed the integration level of the Chilean wheat market with respect to the USA and Argentinean markets using a vector error correction model (VECM), the impact of the band prices (D-BAND) and the change of the band mechanism introduced in 2004 (D-MECH) by the inclusion of two binary variables in the VECM. The results showed strong market integration among Argentina, Chile and USA, with USA leading the market. Additionally, the price of the Chilean wheat was influenced by the USA and Argentina prices. The binary variables,...
