Collembola have significant influences on soil microorganisms and fertility but information on these ecologically important arthropods is lacking, especially in agricultural and tropical environments. Abstract: In detritus-based trophic systems, springtails, dung beetles, saprophagous calyptrate flies and termites consume and fragment organic matter and control populations of decomposer microorganisms, exerting a strong influence on energy and nutrient fluxes. A faunal inventory of these four groups of hexapods was performed in Serra de Santa Catarina (SSC), an area of arboreal-shrub caatinga located in the state of Paraíba, with the purpose of characterizing the assemblages of these taxa, and highlighting their unique links to the local ecosystem. Este trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o impacto da fragmentação sobre a dinâmica populacional de indivíduos da mesofauna edáfica em três fragmentos de florestas nativas na região de Dourados, MS, sendo dois deles localizados em área indígena (Jaguapiru e Bororó) e o terceiro em outra área não indígena (fazenda Azulão). Para avaliar o impacto da fragmentação, foi avaliado o número de Acari Oribatida e Gamasida e insetos Collembola nas três áreas de estudo, utilizando o funil de Berlesse modificado. Observou-se que o fragmento Bororó apresentou um número médio total de 8,42 organismos seguido da Jaguapirú com 11,25 e Azulão com 16,74. Os Acari Oribatida e Gamasida foram os mais numerosos nas três áreas estudadas. |

Soil invertebrate distribution in Araucaria forest, grassland and edge habitats was studied in both disturbed and undisturbed areas in southern Brazil. Mean-density and taxa compositions were verified. Invertebrate densities differed between grassland and the other two habitats in the undisturbed area but not across the disturbed one. At the disturbed area taxa differed between the grassland and the other two habitats. The undisturbed area, on the other hand, presented taxa differences only between the grassland and the forest habitats. The abundance of soil microarthropods from seven fragments of Araucaria Forest, Muitos Capões, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was compared. The size of the fragments ranged from 0.25 ha to 35 ha, the two largest fragments are situated within the Aracuri Ecological Station and the remaining five are situated in a cattle ranching farm. In June 2000, three plots (10 m x 10 m) were established in the central area of each patch, and three soil cores (7 cm diameter x 6 cm deep) were taken per plot. A new standard description of Collembola Symphypleona is proposed. In particular, a standard table of the appendicular chaetotaxy (antennae, legs, and furcula) is given. According to this presentation, the following species are redescribed: Lipothrix lubbocki (Tullberg, 1872), Gisinurus malatestai Dallai, 1970, Caprainea marginata (Schött, 1893), and Caprainea bremondi (Delamare & Bassot, 1957). |

Phylogenetic studies on several groups of arthropods, such as Acari (mites) or Collembola (springtails), make wide use of chaetotaxy. Chaetotaxic characters, besides being morphological features (setal shape), often have a binary nature, that is presence vs. absence. The springtails of the Netherlands: genus Ptenothrix, new to the Dutch fauna (Hexapoda: Entognatha: Collembola) This paper is the second in a series on the identification, distribution and ecology of springtails of the Netherlands. The genus Ptenothrix Börner, 1906 is described, with one new species present in the Netherlands, i.e. P. atra (Linnaeus, 1758). Uit Nederland zijn ruim 200 soorten springstaarten bekend, maar er zijn nog veel nieuwe soorten te verwachten. Deze verwachting is vooral gebaseerd op meldingen van springstaarten uit Denemarken, Duitsland en België, in biotopen die ook bij ons te vinden zijn. In de winter van 2007 werd op een ruderaal terrein in Westzaan Bilobella braunerae ontdekt, een nieuwe soort (en nieuw genus) voor ons land. In dit derde artikel in de serie springstaarten van Nederland worden de twee verwante genera Bilobella en Neanura geïntroduceerd, waarbij de nieuwe soort wordt behandeld. Met de determinatiesleutel zijn de Nederlandse soorten uit de subfamilie Neanurinae, plus de verwachte soorten op naam te brengen. |

In een recent artikel werd het springstaartengenus Ptenothrix besproken, met een nieuwe soort voor de Nederlandse fauna: P. atra. Na toezending van het artikel aan de Belgische springstaartenspecialist Frans Janssens kwam er een mailtje retour met de opmerking dat op de foto’s P. ciliata te zien is en niet P. atra! De lichte tekening op de rugzijde is (binnen Europa) uniek voor P. ciliata en is afwezig bij P. atra. Nadere bestudering van exemplaren van verschillende vindplaatsen in Nederland en gebruik makend van recent gepubliceerde kenmerken bevestigen dat P. ciliata en niet P. atra voorkomt in Nederland. The following three species are redescribed: Sminthurus viridis (Linnaeus, 1758), Sminthurus nigromaculatus Tullberg, 1871, and Sminthurus multipunctatus Schäffer, 1896. Four new species are described from France and Spain: Sminthurus bourgeoisi n. sp., Sminthurus bozoulensis n. sp., Sminthurus leucomelanus n.sp.,and Sminthurus hispanicus n. sp. The importance of the ontogeny of chaetotaxy is stressed. Indeed, not all species acquire the secondary chaetotaxy in the same instar, and for these characters the most informative instar is not the adult but the third juvenile instar. The study of such characters involves the clustering of similar characters. A short discussion is given about this issue (selection of characters and clustering criteria). |

Soil biological sciences are strongly affected by the taxonomic crisis, and most groups of animals in that biota suffer from a strong taxonomic impediment.
