Abstract: In detritus-based trophic systems, springtails, dung beetles, saprophagous calyptrate flies and termites consume and fragment organic matter and control populations of decomposer microorganisms, exerting a strong influence on energy and nutrient fluxes. A faunal inventory of these four groups of hexapods was performed in Serra de Santa Catarina (SSC), an area of arboreal-shrub caatinga located in the state of Paraíba, with the purpose of characterizing the assemblages of these taxa, and highlighting their unique links to the local ecosystem. Avaliação do impacto da fragmentação de florestas nativas sobre a mesofauna edáfica na região de Dourados-MS Ciência e Agrotecnologia

Este trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o impacto da fragmentação sobre a dinâmica populacional de indivíduos da mesofauna edáfica em três fragmentos de florestas nativas na região de Dourados, MS, sendo dois deles localizados em área indígena (Jaguapiru e Bororó) e o terceiro em outra área não indígena (fazenda Azulão). Para avaliar o impacto da fragmentação, foi avaliado o número de Acari Oribatida e Gamasida e insetos Collembola nas três áreas de estudo, utilizando o funil de Berlesse modificado. Observou-se que o fragmento Bororó apresentou um número médio total de 8,42 organismos seguido da Jaguapirú com 11,25 e Azulão com 16,74. Os Acari Oribatida e Gamasida foram os mais numerosos nas três áreas estudadas.

Soil invertebrate distribution in Araucaria forest, grassland and edge habitats was studied in both disturbed and undisturbed areas in southern Brazil. Mean-density and taxa compositions were verified. Invertebrate densities differed between grassland and the other two habitats in the undisturbed area but not across the disturbed one. At the disturbed area taxa differed between the grassland and the other two habitats. The undisturbed area, on the other hand, presented taxa differences only between the grassland and the forest habitats. Abundância de microartrópodes do solo em fragmentos de mata com araucária no sul do Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

The abundance of soil microarthropods from seven fragments of Araucaria Forest, Muitos Capões, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was compared. The size of the fragments ranged from 0.25 ha to 35 ha, the two largest fragments are situated within the Aracuri Ecological Station and the remaining five are situated in a cattle ranching farm. In June 2000, three plots (10 m x 10 m) were established in the central area of each patch, and three soil cores (7 cm diameter x 6 cm deep) were taken per plot. The abundance of microarthropods in the upper six centimeters (soil + litter) varied between 63209 and 102704 ind.m-2, with oribatid mites (Acari, Cryptostigmata) being dominant in all fragments (between 46.9 % and 61.3 % of total individuals). De springstaart Entomobrya unostrigata nieuw voor noordwest Europa (Hexapoda: Collembola: Entomobryidae) Naturalis

Nieuw gevormd landschap, zoals jonge duinvalleien, opgespoten polders en bedrijventerreinen in ontwikkeling vormen de habitat van gespecialiseerde soorten. Je moet tegen een stootje kunnen om in een dergelijke zandige, schaars begroeide omgeving te overleven. Vooral langdurig warme, droge perioden vormen een probleem voor vochtminnende bodemdieren. De springstaartsoorten die hier overleven zijn warmteminnend en droogteresistent, een bijzondere combinatie voor bodemdieren. Dit geldt ook voor Entomobrya unostrigata, een nieuwe aanwinst voor de fauna van Noordwest-Europa. Er is een aantal populaties van deze soort op de Tweede Maasvlakte gevonden. De dieren zaten hier onder stenen en hout op opgespoten zand.

A standardized description of European Sminthuridae (Collembola, Symphypleona), 1: genera Lipothrix, Gisinurus, and Caprainea Naturalis

A new standard description of Collembola Symphypleona is proposed. In particular, a standard table of the appendicular chaetotaxy (antennae, legs, and furcula) is given. According to this presentation, the following species are redescribed: Lipothrix lubbocki (Tullberg, 1872), Gisinurus malatestai Dallai, 1970, Caprainea marginata (Schött, 1893), and Caprainea bremondi (Delamare & Bassot, 1957).

De springstaart Fasciosminthurus quinquefasciatus nieuw voor de Nederlandse fauna (Collembola: Bourletiellidae) Naturalis

Met enige regelmaat duiken nieuwe springstaartsoorten op in ons land. Het vinden van een nieuwe soort is soms op toeval gebaseerd. Op een foto van een sprinkhaan was naast de linker voorpoot een klein, donker vlekje te zien. Uitvergroot bleek het om een klein springstaartje te gaan. Het zwart-wit gestreepte patroon liet geen ruimte voor twijfel over de determinatie: Fasciosminthurus quinquefasciatus, een nieuwe springstaart voor de Nederlandse fauna. In dit artikel wordt het genus en de soort voorgesteld, beschrijven we de habitat en geven we informatie over de verspreiding in de rest van Europa.

Analysis of a species/instars/characters table: a theoretical survey on the use of chaetotaxy in ontophylogenetic studies Naturalis

Phylogenetic studies on several groups of arthropods, such as Acari (mites) or Collembola (springtails), make wide use of chaetotaxy. Chaetotaxic characters, besides being morphological features (setal shape), often have a binary nature, that is presence vs. absence. A seta can be variable in a population, and one may attribute a presence probability to this seta. In fact, the presence probability should be defined for each instar. The springtails of the Netherlands: genus Ptenothrix, new to the Dutch fauna (Hexapoda: Entognatha: Collembola) This paper is the second in a series on the identification, distribution and ecology of springtails of the Netherlands. The genus Ptenothrix Börner, 1906 is described, with one new species present in the Netherlands, i.e. P. atra (Linnaeus, 1758). De springstaarten van Nederland: het genus Bilobella, nieuw voor de fauna, en Neanura (Hexapoda: Entognatha: Collembola) Naturalis

Uit Nederland zijn ruim 200 soorten springstaarten bekend, maar er zijn nog veel nieuwe soorten te verwachten. Deze verwachting is vooral gebaseerd op meldingen van springstaarten uit Denemarken, Duitsland en België, in biotopen die ook bij ons te vinden zijn. In de winter van 2007 werd op een ruderaal terrein in Westzaan Bilobella braunerae ontdekt, een nieuwe soort (en nieuw genus) voor ons land. In dit derde artikel in de serie springstaarten van Nederland worden de twee verwante genera Bilobella en Neanura geïntroduceerd, waarbij de nieuwe soort wordt behandeld. Met de determinatiesleutel zijn de Nederlandse soorten uit de subfamilie Neanurinae, plus de verwachte soorten op naam te brengen.

Niet Ptenothrix atra maar P. ciliata komt voor in Nederland (Hexapoda: Entognatha: Collembola) Naturalis

In een recent artikel werd het springstaartengenus Ptenothrix besproken, met een nieuwe soort voor de Nederlandse fauna: P. atra. Na toezending van het artikel aan de Belgische springstaartenspecialist Frans Janssens kwam er een mailtje retour met de opmerking dat op de foto’s P. ciliata te zien is en niet P. atra! De lichte tekening op de rugzijde is (binnen Europa) uniek voor P. ciliata en is afwezig bij P. atra. Nadere bestudering van exemplaren van verschillende vindplaatsen in Nederland en gebruik makend van recent gepubliceerde kenmerken bevestigen dat P. ciliata en niet P. atra voorkomt in Nederland. The springtails of the Netherlands: genus Orchesella (Hexapoda: Entognatha: Collembola) This is the first in a series of publications on the identification, distribution and ecology of springtails of the Netherlands. In this paper the genus Orchesella Templeton, 1835 is described, which is with four native species present in the Netherlands, i.e. O. cincta (Linnaeus, 1758), O. flavescens (Bourlet, 1839), O. quinquefasciata (Bourlet, 1841), and O. villosa (Geoffroy, 1762). A standardized description of European Sminthuridae (Collembola, Symphypleona), 3: description of seven species of Sminthurus, including four new to science Naturalis

The following three species are redescribed: Sminthurus viridis (Linnaeus, 1758), Sminthurus nigromaculatus Tullberg, 1871, and Sminthurus multipunctatus Schäffer, 1896. Four new species are described from France and Spain: Sminthurus bourgeoisi n. sp., Sminthurus bozoulensis n. sp., Sminthurus leucomelanus n.sp.,and Sminthurus hispanicus n. sp. The importance of the ontogeny of chaetotaxy is stressed. Indeed, not all species acquire the secondary chaetotaxy in the same instar, and for these characters the most informative instar is not the adult but the third juvenile instar. The study of such characters involves the clustering of similar characters. A short discussion is given about this issue (selection of characters and clustering criteria).

In Nederland zijn natuurlijke en semi-natuurlijke graslanden relatief slecht onderzocht op de aanwezigheid van springstaarten. In de ons omringende landen zijn deze biotopen vaak rijk aan specifieke soorten die alleen daar voorkomen. Naar verwachting kunnen in dit milieu veel nieuwe soorten voor onze fauna gevonden worden, vooral op nutriëntarme, zandige en droge ondergrond. Recentelijk zijn twee soorten uit het genus Folsomides in graslanden in het zuiden van ons land aangetroffen. Het betreft hier een nieuw genus voor de Nederlandse fauna. In dit artikel worden het genus en de twee soorten voorgesteld, beschrijven we de habitat en geven we informatie over de verspreiding en begeleidende soorten van deze springstaarten.

The biodiversity of soil communities remains very poorly known and understood. Soil biological sciences are strongly affected by the taxonomic crisis, and most groups of animals in that biota suffer from a strong taxonomic impediment. The objective of this work was to investigate how DNA barcoding - a novel method using a microgenomic tag for species identification and discrimination - permits better evaluation of the taxonomy of soil biota.
